The General Directorate of Endowments at the Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs has restated its yearly pledge to direct waqf funds to vulnerable groups during key charitable periods, led by the holy month of Ramadan. This commitment is reflected in the continuation of the 'Giving Basket' initiative, organised with the Hifz Al Naema Center and financed by the Waqf Fund for Righteousness and Piety, through which essential food items are supplied to more than 2,000 low-income families across Qatar.Director-General Eng Hassan bin Abdullah al-Marzouqi underlined that the directorate prioritises delivering charitable endowments to those entitled to them, particularly during Ramadan, when social solidarity and compassion are especially prominent. He said the Giving Basket programme is closely aligned with the purpose of waqf in serving society and illustrates practical social cohesion, made possible by donors’ contributions and the participation of implementing partners.Al-Marzouqi noted that the project offers a working example of coordination between the General Directorate of Endowments and the Hifz Al Naema Center. Under the scheme, full food baskets are provided to help cover the basic needs of families facing financial hardship, with an emphasis on delivering assistance promptly and respectfully.He added that the directorate continues to pursue and expand partnerships within the community in order to generate lasting humanitarian benefits, ease the burdens on struggling households and embed a stronger culture of mutual support in Qatari society. Hifz Al Naema Center Director Ali Ayed al-Qahtani said the current edition of the Giving Basket marks the sixth year of co-operation with the General Directorate of Endowments, which he said demonstrates the project’s continuity and effectiveness in reaching families in need throughout the country.Al-Qahtani explained that the initiative is designed to offer integrated food parcels that help beneficiaries meet their needs throughout Ramadan, thereby strengthening food security and supporting those who qualify for assistance. He urged benefactors to continue backing waqf-based programmes that deliver enduring humanitarian outcomes, stressing that collaboration between donors and operational institutions reinforces social solidarity and confirms waqf’s role as a key instrument of development and community service.The Giving Basket initiative is among several waqf-backed programmes run by the General Directorate of Endowments to ensure that endowment proceeds are directed to specific funds and purposes as stipulated by donors. It supports the continuity of charitable work and widens the reach of assistance to those most in need, particularly during periods traditionally associated with giving and generosity. 

The Qatar Press Center has signed a co-operation agreement with the Middle East Council on Global Affairs to strengthen collaboration between media and research institutions in Qatar and the wider Arab region.The agreement aims to advance media and research work, organise scientific, cultural, and knowledge-based events, and promote the exchange of expertise and information on issues of mutual interest.The agreement was signed at the Abdullah bin Hussein Al-Nu’ma Hall at the centre’s headquarters by Sadiq al-Amari, director-general of the centre, and Khalid al-Jaber, executive director of the council. Al-Amari said the agreement aims to enhance co-ordination between the two sides across several areas, including organising conferences, seminars, and specialised workshops on media and research. It also provides for joint publications and the exchange of existing publications to broaden audience reach, strengthen intellectual dialogue, and encourage collaboration among researchers, journalists, and the local community.He described the agreement as a strategic step toward building a sustainable bridge between research and media, contributing to higher-quality content and the development of cultural and academic activities at the local and regional levels. The partnership, he added, will offer an integrated platform to support research initiatives, enhance knowledge sharing, and advance common objectives in the service of the community.Al-Jaber said the agreement marks the council’s first partnership with a specialised media institution, underscoring its importance in expanding the media’s role within the council’s activities and amplifying its impact in disseminating knowledge and analysing international affairs.He noted that the agreement will support research and studies in economics, defence, security, and international policy, elevating intellectual discourse and expanding regional and international scientific and media co-operation. The partnership forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen ties between media and research institutions and bridge the gap between journalism and academic studies in ways that benefit Qatari and Arab audiences.The agreement also includes plans to organise lectures and workshops in Qatar and abroad, to offer consultations in cultural, scientific, and media fields, to implement specialised training programmes for executive and administrative leaders, and to publish books and media-focused materials targeting local, Gulf, and Arab audiences. 

The Qatar Press Center (QPC) organised a panel discussion titled 'National Sport Day (NSD): Results and Legacy" as part of its Press Club activities. This session reviewed the journey of the celebration since its launch in 2011, as one of the leading national initiatives that has contributed to a qualitative shift in community awareness of the importance of sports and its role in improving the quality of life.Participants in the session included Abdulaziz al-Ma'arifi, managing editor of Al-Sharq newspaper, and Abdullah al-Dosari, executive director of the Qatar Sports for All Federation and a member of the NSD Committee. The discussion, moderated by journalist Hussein al-Kathiri, was attended by a number of journalists, media professionals, sports enthusiasts, and those interested in Qatari achievements in both the sporting and social spheres.**media[418541]**Hussein al-Kathiri welcomed the attendees, emphasising that the topic of 'National Sport Day: Results and Legacy' is particularly significant given its connection to a national initiative launched by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, in 2011. This initiative designates the second Tuesday of February each year as NSD, a step that has, over time, become an integral part of Qatari society's culture.Al-Ma’arifi affirmed that Qatar has established a pioneering global model by dedicating an NSD and granting employees a paid holiday, an initiative that reflects the country’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life and establishing a culture of physical activity as a sustainable societal choice.Al-Ma’arifi pointed out that the Qatari experience has garnered regional and international attention, with many countries seeking to benefit from its model. He emphasised that the initiative will remain Qatari, as it is not a fleeting event but a comprehensive national project based on planning and sustainability, with a positive health and social impact evident year after year.Al-Dosari affirmed that NSD clearly embodies the vision of the wise leadership and the state's commitment to the health and quality of life of the community, noting the remarkable growth in participation and the accompanying events. Al-Dosari reviewed the most prominent achievements of 2025, explaining that the Qatar Sport for All Federation organised a wide range of community events for children, youth, women, and senior citizens, with a total of 215,506 participants spread across various regions of the country, including the north, south, central Doha, and the western areas of Dukhan and Al Jumailiyah, in addition to public parks, youth centres, and sports clubs.He noted that the sports championships saw the participation of 6,984 athletes across 74 tournaments, while community running races recorded 38,696 participants, with a growing female presence reaching approximately 8,000 participants in 59 races. The school sector also organised 91 events in 60 schools, clearly demonstrating the expanding base of sports participation and solidifying the legacy of National Sport Day as a sustainable national initiative.Al-Maarefi added that the continued support of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, particularly his direct participation in the National Sport Day events, sends a powerful national message that promotes a culture of sport and affirms its importance in the lives of individuals and society.Al-Dosari pointed out that NSD extends a gradual awareness campaign, reflected in its annual themes. He noted that the Qatar Sport for All Federation has targeted more than 200,000 people through its programmes and events, and that major events such as the "Ooredoo" Marathon serve as practical proof of the development of the sports scene and the rise in community awareness.Al-Dossari noted the growing presence and participation of women in various events, alongside the positive momentum of the NSD Award and the stimulating competitive spirit it fosters. He also highlighted the role of the "Sports for All" app in encouraging regular exercise and motivating participants to commit to physical activity.He emphasised that the next phase requires strengthening targeted, high-quality programmes, with a clear focus on integrating people with obesity and people of determination into community sports activities. This will reinforce the principle of inclusion and amplify the initiative's health and social impact. 

A delegation from the Ministry of Finance recently visited the National Center for Privatisation and PPP in Riyadh, aiming to review the centre’s experience and benefit from its expertise in privatisation and public-private partnerships (PPP). The visit included a presentation of the national privatisation strategy, governance models, and operational mechanisms for projects, alongside discussions on lessons learned and ways to enhance ongoing and collaborative cooperation between the two sides, the Ministry of Finance said in social media handle X. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani visited the Web Summit Qatar 2026 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC) Sunday.  Having toured the booths of the participating national and international companies, His Highness the Amir was apprised of the latest innovations and cutting-edge technological systems in the areas of technology and artificial intelligence as well as entrepreneurship and digital transformation.  His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani listened to an explanation about the position of this summit as a global forum to share expertise through holding panel discussions and specialised workshops, representing solution platforms and modern technologies, in addition to public and private sector initiatives supporting the technology sector, with the participation of a contingent of keynote speakers and decision makers in this sector.

The Qatar International Center for Conciliation and Arbitration (QICCA) of the Qatar Chamber announced that it has approved its updated conciliation rules, which will take effect on February 1.This step is part of QICCA's ongoing extensive efforts to enhance dispute resolution mechanisms and improve the services it provides to the business community both locally and internationally.On this occasion, HE QICCA's Vice-Chairman, Dr. Sheikh Thani bin Ali Al-Thani, affirmed that the updated rules represent a significant step in enhancing the conciliation process, noting that they reflect the Center's commitment to developing its dispute resolution mechanisms in line with international best practices.He emphasised that the new rules have been designed to provide a more flexible, efficient, and transparent framework that serves the interests of all parties involved in commercial disputes.For his part, Secretary-General of QICCA, Ibrahim Mohamed Shahbek, praised the updated rules, describing them as an important advancement that strengthens the Center's conciliation system. He noted that the amendments will contribute to improving service quality, accelerating dispute resolution, and supporting the business sector by offering effective alternative methods to litigation.QICCA reaffirmed its continued efforts to enhance its services and provide modern and reliable mechanisms that keep pace with developments in the business environment, ultimately contributing to fostering a more attractive investment climate in Qatar.

The Permanent Web Summit Organising Committee announced that Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, will participate in the 3rd edition of Web Summit Qatar 2026, taking place from February 1-4 February at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center. In a statement Thursday, the Committee said:" The participation of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser will advance the Summit's discussions, particularly around the role of technology in serving society, strengthening education systems through innovation, and empowering communities amid rapid digital transformation". The Committee also confirmed the participation of His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani in Web Summit Qatar 2026, the region's largest and fastest-growing technology event. The Committee mentioned: "Web Summit Qatar 2026 will also feature Qatari industry leaders, including Her Excellency Chairperson of Qatar Museums Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad al-Thani; His Excellency Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ibrahim bin Ali bin Issa al-Hassan al-Mohannadi; and His Excellency President of the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau and Secretary General of the National Planning Council Dr Abdulaziz bin Nasser bin Mubarak al-Khalifa". The statement added: "Qatari senior executives will also participate in the Summit's programme, including His Excellency Managing Director of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy Hassan bin Abdullah al-Thawadi; CEO of Invest Qatar Sheikh Ali bin Alwaleed al-Thani; Chairman of Qai Abdulla bin Hamad al-Misnad; Director General of Al Jazeera Media Network Sheikh Nasser bin Faisal bin Khalifa al-Thani; and Secretary General of the Qatar Research and Development (QRDI) Council Eng Omar Ali al-Ansari". Web Summit Qatar 2026 is expected to host 30,000 participants, more than 1,600 startups, over 800 investors, over 180 global partners, and more than 400 speakers from around the world. The Summit will also receive extensive international media coverage, with over 600 media professionals attending, making it the largest edition of the global event to be hosted in Qatar. 

The British Chamber of Commerce Qatar (BCCQ) will mark the beginning of a new chapter for the UK–Qatar business community with a welcome event on January 27 at JW Marriott Marquis City Center Doha.The event, scheduled from 8pm to 10pm, will bring together members and partners of the UK–Qatar business community, reuniting long-standing QBBF members with new members and guests, while outlining the chamber’s vision and priorities for 2026 and beyond.As 2025 drew to a close, the Qatar British Business Forum (QBBF) completed its transition to become the BCCQ, positioning the organisation as a fully fledged and operational chamber aligned with the global British Chambers of Commerce network.British ambassador Neerav Patel, who serves as BCCQ’s honorary president, will attend the launch and address guests during the programme. In a statement ahead of the event, the chamber noted that its new status will strengthen connections within the UK–Qatar business community, while supporting collaboration, trade, and growth.BCCQ added that it will continue to work closely with the Department for Business and Trade at the British Embassy in Doha, reinforcing efforts to expand bilateral trade and investment.Organisers said the welcome event will highlight the chamber’s strategic vision, explain how it will support members locally and internationally, and celebrate the start of a new chapter for the UK–Qatar business community. 

The population of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries is projected to rise from around 61.5mn in 2024 to approximately 83.6mn by 2050, marking an increase of more than 22mn people over the next quarter century, according to the latest Population Indicators Report issued by the Gulf Statistical Center (GCC-STAT). The Muscat-based centre said population growth across the region is expected to continue steadily between 2025 and 2050, driven by economic expansion, labour demand and demographic dynamics. The report also anticipates a gradual shift in population structure, with the number of people aged 65 and above projected to more than double, exceeding 5.5mn by mid-century. By the end of 2024, the GCC’s total population had grown by 8.5mn compared with 2019, translating into an average annual growth rate of 2.8%, nearly three times the global average. This underscores the sustained pace of demographic expansion in the Gulf region. Within this broader GCC framework, Qatar continues to reflect many of the demographic characteristics highlighted in the report, including a strong working-age base and high levels of urbanisation. Qatar’s population is currently estimated at just over 3.1mn, with long-term projections indicating continued steady growth in line with economic activity and labour-market demand. The country’s demographic profile is marked by a dominant working-age population, which constitutes the large majority of residents, supporting Qatar’s position as a dynamic labour market in sectors such as energy, infrastructure, services, logistics and healthcare. The GCC-STAT report shows that region-wide, the working-age population (15–64 years) accounts for 76.7% of total population, while children aged 0–14 represent 20.6%, and the elderly population 2.6%. This results in a total dependency ratio of around 30 dependents per 100 working-age individuals, a structure that continues to shape economic and social planning across the region. A key long-term trend identified in the report is population ageing. Across the GCC, the number of elderly people (65+) is expected to more than double by 2050. While this group currently represents a small share of the population, rising life expectancy and improved healthcare outcomes are contributing to a gradual demographic transition. GCC-STAT noted that ongoing population expansion and structural changes underline the importance of long-term policy planning in areas such as urban development, healthcare systems, labour markets and social protection. These themes align with broader development strategies across GCC states, including Qatar’s continued focus on sustainable development, human capital and infrastructure planning. The report highlights how the region’s youthful and economically active population base remains a defining feature of the Gulf’s demographic landscape, while gradual structural changes are shaping future planning priorities.

The National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA), in partnership with Al Noor Center for the Blind, launched Thursday the Digital Safety Booklet for Persons with Visual Disabilities, written in Braille. This initiative comes as part of the agency's ongoing efforts to enhance cybersecurity indicators and promote digital safety across society.The booklet was launched during a special ceremony held at Al Noor Center for the Blind, attended by President of NCSA, Eng Abdulrahman bin Ali al-Farahid al- Malki and Executive Director of Al Noor Center for the Blind, Mishaal bin Abdullah Saqr al-Nuaimi.On this occasion, Director-General of NCSA, Ahmed Mohammed Ali al-Mutawa al-Hammadi affirmed that the agency places persons with special needs in general, and persons with visual disabilities in particular, among its top priorities. He noted that they receive special attention across the agency's various projects and initiatives, foremost among them the National Digital Safety Initiative.Al-Hammadi explained that NCSA operates within a clear methodology and an awareness-raising strategy that emphasizes that cybersecurity awareness is a right for everyone and a social and humanitarian priority, a principle reflected in all of the agency's projects and initiatives.For his part, Executive Director of Al Noor Center for the Blind, Mishaal bin Abdullah Saqr al-Nuaimi noted that the centre is keen to provide various forms of support to persons with visual disabilities and contributed to the production of the Digital Safety Booklet as part of its social responsibility toward this group.In turn, Assistant Director of the Policies Department at NCSA, Dalal Abdulaziz al-Aqidi emphasized that the launch of the Digital Safety Booklet for persons with visual disabilities represents the culmination of the agency's efforts to raise awareness among this group. She noted that Braille copies of the booklet will be distributed to persons with visual disabilities across the country, contributing to the enhancement of digital safety indicators and protecting them from cyber risks.She also stressed that the booklet relies on integrated awareness tools tailored to their actual needs, based on the principle that cybersecurity awareness is an ongoing effort and a continuous project that evolves alongside the development of cyberspace and the diversity of digital threats.Meanwhile, Acting Director of the Community Awareness Department at Al Noor Center for the Blind, Munira Ayed al-Adhba explained that cybersecurity awareness for persons with visual disabilities is a top priority for the centre, especially in light of the escalating digital threats facing this group.It is worth noting that the National Digital Safety Initiative, launched by NCSA, aims to enhance cybersecurity and digital safety indicators at the state and community levels. The initiative targets all segments of society, with a particular focus on persons with special needs, women, families, and senior citizens. 

Mada Center has launched its 2026-2028 strategy under the slogan “Universal Access for All,” which highlights high-impact programmes aimed at enhancing quality of life and empowerment for persons with disabilities and the elderly.The strategy is guided by a clear vision and mission focused on empowering people with disabilities and the elderly to live with a higher quality of life within an inclusive and sustainable accessibility ecosystem, fostering more inclusive and accessible environments, services, and experiences both physically and digitally.Mada Center was established in 2010 to promote the principles of inclusion and to build an accessible society for persons with disabilities and the elderly. Mada has become the world’s centre of excellence in Arabic universal accessibility and has contributed to Qatar achieving first place worldwide on the Digital Accessibility Rights Evaluation Index 2020 issued by the United Nation’s Global Initiative for Inclusive Information and Communication Technologies. The strategy focuses on enabling people with disabilities and elderly to enjoy a high quality of life through a comprehensive accessibility ecosystem that promotes independence and opens doors to active participation across all areas of life.It outlines a set of strategic outcomes that Mada seeks to achieve during 2026–2028. These outcomes include several objectives such as to to enable people with disability and the elderly to enjoy a better quality of life through the empowerment of assistive technology; a distinguished position for Qatar in scientific research and innovation in the field of access in Arabic; pioneering in empowerment and specialised capability development and advocacy for universal access policies and practices.Meanwhile, the strategy has a clear set of values that reflect Mada’s institutional approach. The values include people centric programmes; empathy and advocacy; encouraging innovation; community partnership and quality and sustainability. These values indicate that the implementation of the strategy will not rely solely on launching initiatives, but also on measuring impact, enhancing user experience, building effective partnerships, and developing solutions that are scalable and sustainable.Furthermore, the strategy presents an integrated framework with four strategic programmes that represent practical implementation pathways to deliver the desired impact for beneficiaries and the wider community.The first one is an inclusive education programme. It is focused on supporting inclusion within educational settings by enhancing equitable learning opportunities and removing barriers that may limit students with disabilities from accessing educational content and services.The second programme is to provide access to employment. It is aimed at strengthening access to the labour market by supporting accessibility across recruitment pathways and workplace environments and by enhancing the readiness and effectiveness of work and entrepreneurship ecosystems to become more inclusive and responsive to diversity.The strategy further aims at empowered community programme that is centred on building a community capable of participating and engaging effectively through raising awareness and developing environments and services that enable greater participation of people with disabilities and the elderly in public life.The fourth programme is a research and innovation project titled ‘Edge’. It serves as a supportive track for advancing knowledge and innovative solutions in accessibility, highlighting research and innovation as key drivers of tangible impact- particularly in the context of the Arabic language and the associated technical and knowledge-based challenges of universal access.Mada’s 2026–2028 strategy reflects a practical direction toward translating the concept of universal access into measurable programmes and outcomes, with a focus on assistive technology, capacity building, activating partnerships, and embedding policies and practices that support universal access.Within this framework, Mada continues to present a strategic model that places beneficiaries first, turns innovation into solutions, and reinforces inclusion as a societal and institutional value measured by its impact on quality of life and the opportunities available to all.
