The Follow-Up Committee of the Joint Qatari-Saudi Business Council recently held its first meeting in Riyadh.It was presided over by Hamad bin Ali al-Shuwair, chairman of the Saudi side, and Qatar Chamber board member Ali bin Abdullatif al-Misnad, who is also a member of the council. The meeting was also attended by Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Emadi, Qatar Chamber board member and member of the council.The meeting discussed ways to stimulate the role of the sectoral committees within the council, particularly the education and health sectors. It also reviewed a proposal to prepare a study on establishing a joint investment company aimed at enhancing economic integration between the two countries, in addition to intensifying communication with the relevant authorities and unifying delegations for foreign visits from both sides.Attendees also reviewed a number of topics, including the importance and advantages of Hamad Port for Saudi traders, customs tariffs on Qatari goods, and the temporary entry of equipment and vehicles from Qatar.In his remarks, al-Misnad noted that the formation of the committee reflects the mutual keenness of both sides to activate the outcomes of the joint business council’s meetings and translate its recommendations into practical steps that contribute to strengthening economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.Al-Misnad also stated that the committee plays a leading role in identifying the challenges facing the business community in both countries and working to address them, in addition to proposing initiatives that would enhance co-operation between business owners and open new opportunities for joint and mutual investments, thereby increasing trade exchange and strengthening bilateral economic partnership.He affirmed the chamber’s commitment to strengthening close co-operation with its Saudi counterparts through the Qatari-Saudi Business Council, in line with the deep-rooted fraternal and historical relations between the two countries and the wise directives of their leaderships aimed at promoting economic integration and developing strategic partnerships. 

His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi co-chaired the third Qatari-Japanese Strategic Dialogue here Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in the deepening bilateral relationship between the two nations.  The comprehensive dialogue addressed prospects for advancing co-operation across multiple critical sectors, including trade, economy, investment, security and defence, education, healthcare, scientific and medical research, science and technology, tourism, infrastructure development, human resources development, and capacity building and training.  Both countries reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and peaceful means while conducting an extensive review of the latest regional and international developments.  In a separate bilateral meeting held on the same day, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and Motegi engaged in detailed discussions on ways to support and enhance the robust co-operation between their countries.  The talks covered the comprehensive agenda items of the strategic dialogue, along with several other matters of mutual interest to both nations. The PM emphasised that the third Qatari-Japanese Strategic Dialogue represents an important milestone in the close and growing relations between the two sides, which are firmly grounded in respect, trust, co-operation, friendship, and mutual interests.  He further noted that commercial, economic, and investment interests have formed the backbone of the strong relations between Qatar and Japan, praising the distinguished role of Japanese companies in Qatar's development process. Following the dialogue, the two nations issued a joint statement highlighting key areas of collaboration and shared vision.  The statement noted that the Qatar-Japan Strategic Dialogue serves as a testament to the strong partnership between the two countries, further reinforced by the announcement of a broader Strategic Partnership in 2023.  Both ministers commended the strength of bilateral relations and reviewed the substantial progress achieved since the Second Strategic Dialogue held in 2023. Both sides underscored the critical importance of strengthening economic and energy cooperation, with particular emphasis on energy security, stable supply, and enhanced collaboration in technology and innovation. They highlighted how trade, investment, and co-operation in advanced industries support economic growth and diversification in both countries.  The two countries also reiterated their commitment to defence and security co-operation, including collaboration on maritime security and freedom of navigation, aligned with shared interests in maintaining regional stability.  The ministers exchanged comprehensive views on global and regional developments, including the evolving situations in the Middle East, Israel-Palestine, Iran, Syria, and East Asian affairs, emphasising the vital importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and multilateral engagement in promoting lasting peace and stability.  Relevant working groups will continue to convene throughout 2026 to advance these objectives, with outcomes to be presented at the Fourth Qatar-Japan Strategic Dialogue scheduled to be held in Tokyo.

Japan is prepared to support Qatar as it shifts its economic focus from traditional energy to more advanced sectors, according to Kitamura Toshihiro, the press secretary/DG for Press and Public Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan.Responding to a Gulf Times question during a media briefing in Doha Tuesday, Toshihiro emphasised that the Japan-Qatar bilateral relationship is maturing beyond its historic foundations in energy and infrastructure to embrace a future defined by innovation.“Qatar is very active not only in diplomacy, but also in the economy, as well. [The Qatari] government is now trying to shift from energy to other areas, such as artificial intelligence (AI) or other so-called advanced technologies, so that could be the joint common areas of cooperation for both Japan and Qatar,” he told this newspaper.Toshihiro noted that the visit of Minister of Foreign Affairs Toshimitsu Motegi to Qatar, where he co-chaired the third ‘Japan-Qatar Strategic Dialogue’, marks a first-of-its-kind mission under the administration of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and underscores the vital importance Japan places on the Middle East.The press secretary said energy remains a cornerstone of the partnership, with long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) contracts serving as a foundation for decades of friendship. He said Japan is currently promoting the ASEAN Zero Emission Community (AZEC) initiative, which views LNG as a primary transition fuel for reconciling economic development with green transformation.Toshihiro said, “By providing Japanese technology to ASEAN nations, Japan aims to expand the market for LNG in partnership with Qatari resources. In that context, we consider that LNG remains a more prosperous source of energy.“Major Japanese companies and the Japanese government are working very hard with ASEAN countries to expand the market for LNG...in this context, I think there are many possibilities between Japan and the Qatari government in promoting LNG cooperation,” he explained.According to Toshihiro, economic cooperation is further maturing through significant reciprocal investments, including a $2.5bn joint investment fund established between the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) and Japan’s ORIX Corp.Looking forward, Toshihiro pointed out that the Japanese government has identified 17 priority areas for future development, including AI, which align with the Qatar National Vision 2030.To facilitate this, Toshihiro said the Japanese Embassy in Doha plans to brief domestic firms next month on the vast possibilities for viewing Qatar as a strategic hub for regional expansion. 

His Excellency Sheikh Bandar bin Mohammed bin Saoud al-Thani, the Qatar Central Bank Governor and Chairman of the Qatar Investment Authority, Monday met with Jacob Helberg, the US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs.  During the meeting, they exchanged views on a range of topics of mutual interest, and discussed ways to enhance bilateral co-operation in relevant fields.

Qatar and the United States signed the "Pax Silica" Declaration today, marking a strategic step to enhance bilateral co-operation in advanced technologies and supply chain security while supporting global economic stability. The declaration reinforces the partnership between the two countries and contributes to building a more resilient and sustainable global economic ecosystem.His Excellency Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Sayed signed on behalf of Qatar, while the US Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg signed for the United States. The agreement reflects both countries' shared commitment to strengthening secure and reliable technology supply chains, safeguarding critical resources, and ensuring the resilience of global supply networks.Qatar's accession to Pax Silica aligns with its national priorities to consolidate its position as a regional and international hub for advanced technologies and artificial intelligence, while supporting Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030, which aims to foster a competitive and sustainable digital economy.Through this initiative, Qatar will expand international partnerships in semiconductors, advanced computing, cybersecurity, and digital technologies, enhancing its technological capabilities and supporting economic diversification.At the signing ceremony, Dr. Al Sayed described the declaration as "a new milestone in the Qatar-US partnership, founded on trust, shared interests, and a unified vision for advancing stability and prosperity." He noted that Qatar takes pride in its role within leading international partnerships dedicated to strengthening secure and reliable supply chains in semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and advanced technologies."The world is undergoing a profound transformation driven by artificial intelligence, rising demand for energy and critical minerals, and rapid technological advancement," Dr. Al Sayed said, stressing that success requires close cooperation to reinforce technological ecosystems and deepen partnerships based on trust and shared responsibility.He emphasized Qatar's investments in the future digital economy's foundations, including digital infrastructure, advanced industries, and research and innovation ecosystems. Cloud computing centers launched by US companies have contributed significantly to positioning Qatar as one of the region's most advanced digital hubs, he noted.Dr. Al Sayed highlighted the Qatar AI Initiative (QAI) as a national platform promoting innovation, expanding cooperation in artificial intelligence, and ensuring alignment of advanced technologies with the highest standards of safety, governance, and technological security. "Doha's rapidly evolving skyline stands as a testament to Qatar's accelerated development and readiness to play an influential role in shaping the future of the global digital economy," he said.The minister affirmed that Pax Silica opens new horizons for cooperation in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, cloud infrastructure, and secure supply chains while supporting Qatar's transition toward an innovation-driven economy and enhancing US supply chain resilience.Helberg welcomed Qatar's accession, describing it as "a pivotal moment for US-Qatar relations and for the global economy as a whole." He stated the initiative reflects a fundamental shift as the region transitions from an oil-based system to one centered on technological innovation and "silicon diplomacy.""While the 20th century was driven by oil and steel, the 21st century is being shaped by computing power and critical minerals," Helberg said. Under this cooperation, the US and Qatar will work together on strategic investments, including critical minerals security initiatives, modernization of global logistics infrastructure, and strengthening partnerships in artificial intelligence.He highlighted Qatar's transformation from a traditional energy supplier into a hub for computing and connectivity, noting the alliance is "defined by capabilities rather than traditional alignments, bringing together countries with the resources and strategic vision to secure a shared technological future."Closing his remarks, Helberg invited Qatar to an upcoming ministerial meeting in Washington focusing on critical minerals, stating: "Welcome to the alliance. Let us build together the operating system for the 21st century."Pax Silica is an international initiative led by the US Department of State, prioritized during 2024-2025, aiming to enhance security and integrity of advanced-technology supply chains associated with the artificial intelligence era, in partnership with countries across Europe, East Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. 

His Excellency the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani Saturday received a phone call from Angola's Minister of External Relations Tete Antonio.During the call, they discussed ways to advance bilateral co-operation between the two countries, as well as to promote a peaceful solution pathway between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of Rwanda.HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Qatar's unyielding position, calling for conflicts to be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means, and for the respect of international law principles to strengthen stability, global peace, and security.

His Excellency the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi met Monday with Indonesia’s ambassador to Qatar Ridwan Hassan, on the occasion of the end of his tenure. HE al-Muraikhi extended thanks to the ambassador for his efforts in supporting and strengthening bilateral relations, wishing him success in his new duties.  

His Highness the Deputy Amir Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Thani, met in his office at the Amiri Diwan Monday with the ambassador of the Republic of the Gambia, Foday Malang, who called to greet His Highness at the end of his tenure in the country.  HH the Deputy Amir accorded the Gambian Ambassador the Al Wajbah Decoration in recognition of his role in supporting and strengthening bilateral relations, wishing him success in his future missions and relations between the two countries further development and growth.  The ambassador expressed his thanks and appreciation to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, His Highness the Deputy Amir, and officials in the country for the co-operation he received, which contributed to the success of his tenure in the country.

The provincial governor of Misamis Occidental in the Philippines has invited Qatari investors to explore transportation opportunities in Northern Mindanao, particularly the revival of the Mindanao Railway Project (MRP), as part of a broader push to strengthen bilateral ties through trade and tourism.Governor Henry S Oaminal told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview that the Provincial Government of Misamis Occidental considers transportation as a priority sector, alongside tourism and agriculture.Oaminal was in Doha recently as part of a business delegation comprising officials of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA). Alongside the Philippine Embassy in Qatar, the delegation held meetings with private and public sector entities, including Qatar Chamber, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), and Qatari Diar, among others.“Transportation is one of the investment areas of concentration that we’ve identified aside from tourism. We’ve heard that Qatari investors are interested in opportunities in the transportation sector, and since we are reviving the Mindanao Railway Project, this is one area that could be explored with them,” Oaminal explained.He further said the delegation exchanges would be a mechanism to explore these opportunities: “It can go hand in hand; the trade relationship can be posted to enhance one’s economy, particularly in my home province of Misamis Occidental in Mindanao.“It’s a developing province. We have strong potential for trade and investment, as well as in agriculture. There are also opportunities in tourism because of the ongoing developments we have in other destinations like our mountains and coastal areas.”Oaminal said: “We can explore the conduct of an inbound mission from Qatar to Mindanao, particularly in Northern Mindanao and our province, and vice versa, so that we can forge and promote trade and tourism relations.”Oaminal also confirmed that food security and agriculture are also part of the investment agenda: “We have dairy farms in Mindanao that Qatari investors can visit to explore investment opportunities in this sector, so agriculture and dairy farms are promising areas that we are willing to discuss with potential private and public entities in the future.”The governor noted that the delegation from MinDA held discussions with Qatari travel operators, with plans to invite them to Mindanao for a travel operators convention, which the provincial government and MinDA will organise. “And in return, we plan to send a delegation from Misamis Occidental to Qatar to explore the many possibilities where we can establish good business relationships, not only in trade but in all aspects,” he emphasised. 

Her Excellency the Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser al-Misnad met Thursday with Assistant Minister and Director-General of the Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Keiichi Iwamoto, who is visiting Qatar.  Discussions during the meeting focused on the two countries' bilateral relations and ways to bolster them, especially in the area of international co-operation. The two sides also discussed prospects of expanding humanitarian and developmental partnerships, in addition to a host of topics of mutual interest. 

Her Excellency the Minister of State for International Co-operation Dr Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser al-Misnad has held talks in Doha with Malawi’s Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Joseph Mwanamvekha. The meeting reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to enhance co-operation, particularly in the areas of economic planning, sustainable development and capacity building. The two sides also discussed issues of mutual interest. 

The Ministry of Municipality announced the arrival of two Asian elephants at Al Khor Park. The elephants are a gift from the government and people of Nepal, which embodies the depth of bilateral relations and the bonds of friendship and co-operation.The ministry said the male elephant, Khagendra Pradsad, is six years old and weighs 1,190kg, while the female, Rudra Kali, is seven years old and weighs 1,200kg. They were born and bred in the Elephant Breeding and Training Centre, Sauraha, Chitwan National Park, Nepal.The couple were seen off from Chitwan National Park on December 17, according to a The Himalayan Times report. The paper cited Dr Haribhadra Acharya, Information officer at the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation, who said the calves would be transported to Qatar via a chartered cargo plane from Bhairahawa International Airport. The preparations were underway to move the calves from Sauraha to Bhairahawa a day earlier to meet the flight schedule and road conditions.**media[396061]**According to Acharya, two mahouts are accompanying the elephants under the supervision of park animal technician Dinesh Dhakal, who will return to Nepal after ensuring the proper management of the elephants. Nepal has previously gifted elephants to friendly nations as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations and highlight the country's biodiversity internationally.The Elephant Breeding and Training Centre initially received 16 elephants from India, two from Myanmar, and two from Thailand. To date, the centre has bred and raised 68 elephants, six of which have died, while 61 have undergone formal training.The decision to gift elephants to Qatar was first announced during the official visit of then Nepal president Bidya Devi Bhandari in 2018. The ministry explained, via X, that the public can visit the Asian elephants at the Al Khor Park by booking through the Aoun app or the ministry's website.
