Waad al-Maadeed, who graduated from Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) last year, received the Platinum Educational Excellence Award during the Educational Excellence Award ceremony from His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. The award recognises students who demonstrate excellence across multiple dimensions, including leadership, personal development, community contribution, and research.Standing on the stage with His Highness the Amir, with her family in the audience, was a surreal experience for al-Maadeed. “It felt like the perfect ending to a long chapter of hard work, but also the beginning of something even bigger,” she said. “It was a moment I shared with my family, who have supported me every step of the way and a reminder to the community that Qatar’s investment in its youth is resulting in excellence across the country.” At the GU-Q, there was resounding response to her achievement. “It is an incredible honour and a powerful testament to Waad’s dedication, talent, and perseverance,” said Dr Ken Grich, associate dean of students. It was also a chance to celebrate two other GU-Q students recognised at the ceremony: first-year students Fatma al-Mohannadi and Fatma al-Kuwari, honoured for their exemplary high school careers. It’s a fitting place for them to continue pursuing excellence, says al-Maadeed, who saw the GU-Q as a place to grow not just academically, but as a person committed to the greater good. Shortly after graduating, she was selected for the Qatar Leadership Centre’s Young Leaders Programme, a competitive international fellowship that placed her at the United Nations headquarters in New York City. Now working at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, al-Maadeed is focusing on a future of giving back to her country.

Under the patronage of His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, the Ministry of Labour (MoL) Tuesday unveiled the 2026 Qatar Nationalisation Award for the Private Sector, reaffirming national efforts to develop Qatari talent and strengthen local participation in the private workforce.The launch ceremony was attended by His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defence Affairs Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan al-Thani, along with several ministers, senior officials and business leaders.In his address, His Excellency Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Samikh al-Marri said the award reflects the vision of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, who regards human capital as the nation’s greatest wealth. He stressed that nationalisation in the private sector must be guided by efficiency, skill and merit, supported by education and training systems that prepare Qataris for the jobs of the future.Dr al-Marri described the 2024 Private Sector Nationalisation Law as a turning point, laying out a comprehensive legal framework and incentives to expand Qatari participation in private companies. He added that the National Strategy for an Effective and Highly Productive Workforce 2024–2030 aims to lift Qatari employment in the private sector from 17% to 20%, supported by around 15,400 workers.Since the Amiri Decree assigning the MoL’s current mandate, partnerships with private companies have already resulted in the employment of 7,861 Qataris and children of Qatari women across productive industries.“The establishment of the Qatar Nationalisation Award underscores the wise leadership’s vision to promote competition among private companies, recognise innovation, and honour exceptional Qatari talent,” Dr al-Marri said.The new award features two main categories — Institutions and Individuals. Institutional awards recognise excellence in areas such as recruitment, training, talent retention, and onboarding programmes for university and secondary school graduates. Individual awards celebrate Qatari professionals and children of Qatari women who demonstrate exceptional performance in advancing national workforce goals, spanning 27 winners across nine sectors at three levels: future national talent, outstanding competence, and leadership excellence.Dr al-Marri said the launch of the first edition marks a milestone in aligning labour market policies with the Qatar National Vision 2030, aiming to boost productivity, foster sustainable private-sector growth, and build a competitive national economy driven by skilled Qatari professionals.

Under the patronage and presence of His Excellency Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau organised the second edition of the Qatar Government Excellence Award ceremony to honour the winning ministries and government agencies, and to celebrate the tangible progress they have made in the level of institutional performance and the quality of government services.The 2nd Qatar Government Excellence Award included seven categories, distributed across four main awards and three specialised sub-awards. The participating ministries and government entities were distributed into competitive groups according to the criteria of the Qatar Government Excellence Model.The Qatar Government Excellence Award was launched based on Amiri Decision No. 63 of 2023, with the aim of raising the level of quality of government performance and encouraging government agencies and employees to compete in applying quality, development, and excellence in performance, by honouring the outstanding achievements and efforts of all categories contributing to the realisation of Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to transform Qatar into an advanced country capable of achieving sustainable development, and ensuring the continuation of a decent life for all the generations of its people.  

The Arab Book Award has announced the opening of nominations for its fourth edition, accepting submissions until May 28, 2026, through the award’s website. Launched by Qatar in March 2023, the Arab Book Award focuses on books written in Arabic and aims to honour researchers, publishers, and institutions contributing to the Arab book industry. A statement issued by the award organisers indicated that nominations for the fourth edition have been opened following the awarding of prizes to the winners of the third edition, held under the auspices of the Qatari National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. Dr Hanan al-Fayyad, media adviser for the Arab Book Award, said that the approved categories for the fourth edition include linguistic and critical studies, with this year’s focus on grammatical and morphological studies, and critical studies in narrative and theatre. In the social and philosophical studies category, this edition will focus on Islamic and Arab philosophy and psychology. For historical studies, they will be dedicated to research related to the history of the Arab and Islamic world only, from the 12th century AH to the present day. Dr al-Fayyad added that the field of Islamic studies in the Arab Book Award will be open to research on Qur’anic sciences and the principles of exegesis, in addition to the field of dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and textual criticism. This cycle is dedicated to the critical edition of books on creed, the foundations of religion, Islamic philosophy, and the principles of jurisprudence. She emphasised that the primary criterion for acceptance is scholarly contribution and the quality of the critical edition, noting that the award will not accept any nominations outside these fields and disciplines this year. The media adviser for the Arab Book Award explained that the award encompasses two categories, nominations for which are both open, provided the work belongs to one of the award’s academic disciplines. The first category is the “Single Book”, which is for Arabic books whose subject matter falls within one of the fields of knowledge specified by the award It must be written in Arabic, published in print, have an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) within the last four years, be at least 30,000 words long, adhere to scholarly standards, and be submitted by the author during their lifetime. Joint submissions are also accepted, provided they are not the product of conferences or group seminars, and with the consent of all participants. The award also stipulates that works in second or subsequent editions will not be accepted if they do not meet the specified timeframes. The application form and nomination procedures must be completed through the website. The second category, “Achievement”, requires that the nominee, whether an individual or an institution, have produced original and innovative Arabic work that contributes to human knowledge, while adhering to intellectual property laws. The online application form must be completed according to the conditions detailed on the award’s website. The award further states that allocating specific branches in each cycle is part of a scholarly vision aimed at systematically exploring various fields of Arabic knowledge, encouraging research in areas with limited output, and raising the quality of authorship and scholarly investigation. 

Qatar's Ministry of Sports and Youth has honoured the winners of the first edition of the State Sports Day Award, recognising government bodies, private institutions and individuals for their contributions to promoting physical activity and community sport.The award ceremony was held ahead of the State Sports Day 2026 celebrations and was attended by His Excellency Minister of Sports and Youth Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani. Also attending were His Excellency Minister of State for Interior Affairs Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Faisal al-Thani, and His Excellency Undersecretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, Yasser bin Abdullah al-Jamal, along with senior officials.The event recognised national institutions for their sustained initiatives to promote public health and encourage physical activity within workplaces and communities, supporting Qatar's long-term vision of building a healthy and active society.The Ministry of Interior won first place in the institutional category, followed by the University of Doha for Science and Technology in second place, and Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development in third.Individual awards were also presented across several categories. Yousuf al-Muftah won the over-60 category after participating in 16 running events in 2025. Hassan al-Marikhi won the men's category with participation in 27 community sports events, while Kholoud Aqeel received the women's award after taking part in 31 activities during the year.In the children's category, Ghanem al-Nabet was honored for recording the highest number of participations, with 26 sports activities.Awards were also presented for the highest number of steps recorded through the Qatar Sports for All Federation app. Hamad al-Marri won the men's category after maintaining an average of more than 10,000 steps per day throughout 2025, while Nour Mohammed won the women's category for achieving the same daily average.Speaking at the event, Abdulrahman bin Mussallam al-Dosari, Chairman of the State Sports Day Committee and President of the Qatar Sports for All Federation, said the awards reflected growing institutional and community commitment to making sport a daily habit rather than a once-a-year activity.He added that State Sports Day has evolved into a national platform for promoting healthy lifestyles, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. 

Four Qatari cities won several awards at the 15th edition of the Arab Cities Award, highlighting Qatar's advanced standing in urban planning, environmental sustainability, heritage preservation, and architectural excellence. Al Rayyan won first place for the Twin Minarets Project, while Doha ranked second in the Architectural Project Award. Al Shamal secured first place in the Architectural Heritage Revival category for the Restoration and Development of Al Zubarah Fort, and Al Wakrah placed third for the Old Al Wakrah Souq Development project. In the Environmental Health and Safety Award, Al Wakrah ranked second and Doha third. Qatari architect Ibrahim Mohammed Al Jaidah won first place in the Architect Award category, in recognition of his contributions to Qatari and Arab architecture, sustainability concepts, and the promotion of local architectural identity. The results were announced during a press conference attended by senior municipal officials and representatives of the Arab Towns Organization. Officials noted that the achievement reflects Qatar's commitment to adopting best international practices in sustainable and innovative urban development, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. The judging committee reviewed 31 nominations from Arab cities and individuals, with strong competition across all award categories.

As part of the events accompanying the awards ceremony of the third edition of the Arab Book Award, the organisers hosted a symposium titled “The Arab Book and Cultural Identity.” The symposium brought together a distinguished group of academics and researchers from Qatar and across the Arab world and was attended by a large number of intellectuals and interested participants. Dr Naji al-Sharif, executive director of the Arab Book Award, welcomed the guests and attendees to Doha, underscoring the symposium's importance. He noted that it reflects the award’s vision of becoming a global platform for recognising scientific and intellectual excellence and highlighting original scholarly contributions. This, he said, contributes to raising the quality of the Arab book in both form and content, while strengthening its regional and international presence. He also announced that this year’s symposium coincides with the opening of nominations for the fourth edition of the award. The first session opened with a presentation by Dr Abdul Hamid al-Hussami, Professor of Modern Literature and Criticism at King Khalid University, who examined representations of identity in interpretive discourse. Professor Abdel Latif Abid, Professor of Contemporary Tunisian Thought and Literature, followed with an analysis of identity in selected modern Tunisian works, highlighting the plurality of identity frameworks, including Arabism, Islam, and national particularity. He stressed that Tunisian identity is shaped as both a historical continuum and a cultural and political project oriented toward the future. In a paper presented by Dr Imtenan Smadi, Iraqi critic Dr Nadia Hanawi, Professor of Modern Literary Criticism and Narrative Theory, explored the centrality of identity in Arabic travel literature. She argued that this genre has preserved its cultural identity through adaptation rather than rupture, by reworking earlier models while acknowledging their origins and emphasising the author’s role in safeguarding authenticity and narrative identity. The session concluded with a presentation by Dr Hassan al-Rumaihi, a thinker and researcher in contemporary Arab thought, titled “Gaza the Successor,” offering an ethical and identity-based reading of the Palestinian cause. He described Gaza as a model of succession and historical responsibility, affirming that the Palestinian people are historical agents rather than merely victims of suffering. The second session began with Professor Dr Nelly Hanna, Professor of Social and Cultural History and a specialist in Ottoman Egyptian history, who examined the relationship between language and identity in Egypt during the 17th and 18th centuries. Dr Fatima Al-Suwaidi, a researcher in Arabic literature and travel writing and a professor at Qatar University, presented a reading of identity in Ibn Battuta’s travels, exploring the tension between the self and the dialectic of decline. Dr Tayeb Bouaza, a researcher in contemporary philosophy and issues of identity and globalisation, then addressed the meaning of identity in an age of globalised communication, arguing that identity is not a fixed essence but a dynamic historical construct. He warned that the real danger lies not in globalisation itself, but in identity-based isolation and the refusal to engage with others. The symposium concluded with a presentation by Professor Dr Abdelhakim Ajhar, a researcher in philosophy and contemporary cultural thought, titled “Identity and the Arabic Book.” In their closing remarks, participants emphasised that identity in the Arabic book is neither static nor closed, but a dynamic historical and cultural process. They affirmed that rereading heritage through the lens of contemporary writing remains essential to understanding the Arab self and its place in a rapidly changing world.

His Excellency Sheikh Thani bin Hamad al-Thani, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD), honoured the winners of the 3rd Arab Book Award at an official ceremony Tuesday. The ceremony was organised at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. In this year’s single-book category for linguistic and literary studies – focusing on literary and critical examinations of Arab heritage up to the end of the 10th century AH – Abdullah al-Rashid was awarded first place for his work The Recording of Debauchery in the Arab Heritage: Presentation, Explanation, and Interpretation. Second place went to Amer Abu Muharib for his book Treasures of the Forgotten: The Etiquette of the Followers in the Literary Heritage – Genres, Rhetoric, and Archives.Third place was awarded to Khalid Abdul Raouf al-Jabr for his book Reception in the Arab Intellectual Heritage. In the field of historical studies, this session was dedicated to Arab and Islamic history from the end of the 6th century AH to the end of the 12th century AH. Nasser al-Rabat won second place for his work on Taqi al-Din al-Maqrizi’s The Conscience of Egyptian History, and Ahmed Mahmoud Ibrahim also won second place (a tie) for his book Noah’s Ark: Eastern Migrations to Egypt and the Levant during the Mamluk Sultanate. HE Sheikh Thani also presented awards to the winners in the field of Islamic sciences and studies, which focused on biography and hadith studies. Ahmed Sanoubar won second place for his book Political Authority and the Movement of Hadith Transmission and Criticism: A Historical Study of the Hadiths on the Virtues of the Companions, and Mohammed Anas Sarmini received an encouragement award for his book The Definitive and the Probable between the People of Opinion and the People of Hadith. In the field of social and philosophical studies, which focuses on intellectual and economic studies, Sawsan al-Otaibi won third place for her book The Concept of Man According to Taha Abd al-Rahman. In the field of dictionaries, encyclopaedias, and textual criticism, Yasser al-Dumyati won for his Encyclopaedia of Jurisprudence According to the Four Schools of Thought. HE Sheikh Thani also presented the Arab Book Award to the individual winners in the Achievement category: Dr Kian Ahmed Hazem from Iraq, Dr Muhammad Suhail Taqoush from Lebanon, Dr Muhammad Saleh al-Musfir from Qatar, Mukhtar al-Ghouth from Mauritania, Muqbil al-Tam al-Ahmadi from Yemen, and Dr Nadia Mustafa from Egypt. The Institutional Achievement Award was presented to the Juma Al Majid Centre for Culture and Heritage in UAE, Dar al-Ihyaa Publishing and Distribution from Morocco, and Dar Kunooz al-Ma’rifah from Jordan.
