Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said retaining the Spanish Super Cup this week would be a boost for his team’s other ambitions this season. The record 15-time champions face Athletic Bilbao today in a semi-final clash at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Barca won the competition last season as the first part of a domestic treble, the first triumph of Flick’s reign, followed up by triumphs in La Liga and the Copa del Rey. “This tournament is a little bit different (to the equivalent competition) in Germany, but I like it,” said former Bayern Munich coach Flick. “For us to win the Super Cup (last season) gave us a lot of energy for the rest of the season and this is also what we want this year.” Even though significant questions remain around their defending, Barcelona are favourites to win the Super Cup and lead La Liga after nine consecutive top flight victories. Despite being outplayed by neighbours Espanyol in a tense derby clash on Saturday, late goals and a sensational performance from stopper Joan Garcia helped the Catalans claim a 2-0 victory. Flick insisted his team had to perform better at the back if they are to succeed in the sixth edition of the tournament held in Saudi Arabia. “It will not be an easy match (if) we make the same mistakes as on Saturday, it will not be easy, so we have to work on our things,” continued Flick. “We have to play much better in the defence, we have to play connected as one team, and this is what I missed on Saturday, so we have to make things much better.”Central defender Ronald Araujo could return to action this week after an extended mental health break. The Uruguayan was granted leave for around a month following a red card in Barcelona’s 3-0 Champions League defeat by Chelsea in November. “We will see this training (session) today and I will also want to speak with him, so we have not decided how to do it tomorrow,” said Flick. “I think it takes time, so if he feels ready for tomorrow maybe we will change something, but at the moment it’s not our plan to do this.” Flick confirmed Barcelona are close to signing Joao Cancelo from Al Hilal on loan until the end of the season, but the deal has not been completed. “With Joao maybe he can give us more options also as full-back, both sides in the offence, good quality, but (as far as) I know, it’s not done,” said Flick. Cancelo spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester City. Athletic, eighth in La Liga, last won the Super Cup in 2021, beating Barcelona in the final, and have lifted the trophy on three occasions. Only the Catalans and Real Madrid, on 13 triumphs, have a better record. “It’s widely expected that the final will be Barca against Madrid, but a lot can happen in 90 minutes, and we have to go out there and capitalise on that,” said Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde. “Our intention is to take advantage of any opportunity we get. We know the difficulties and the opponent we’re facing, we have to try to overcome them, and that’s about it.” Real Madrid’s Mbappe to miss Spanish Super CupReal Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe will miss the Spanish Super Cup this week as he recovers from a knee sprain. The Spanish giants did not name the French superstar, the team’s top goalscorer, in their squad for the tournament. Mbappe was diagnosed with the issue last week and a source close to the 27-year-old said he would likely be sidelined for at least three weeks. Xabi Alonso’s side face city rivals Atletico Madrid tomorrow in the semi-finals. The Spanish coach is under pressure after a disappointing start to the season, with his team trailing champions Barca by four points in La Liga.

Poor preparation derailed New Zealand’s Twenty20 World Cup campaign in 2024 but the Black Caps will leave no stone unturned as they approach next month’s global showpiece seeking their first title, all-rounder James Neesham said. Determined ‌to avoid another group-stage exit, New Zealand will head into the next ‌edition in India and Sri ‍Lanka with proper match practice thanks to a five-game T20 series scheduled against India from January 21-31. “Obviously, the 2024 World Cup in West Indies, we were very under-prepared,” Neesham told Reuters via video call. “We didn’t have any games going ‍into the tournament, which wasn’t ideal, coming off the back of the Indian Premier League and a lot of guys being busy over there. We’ve rectified that and we’ve got a good series against a strong team getting into the World Cup.” The 35-year-old said playing India on their own turf would help New Zealand finalise their starting 11 for the tournament, which begins on February 7. “It’ll be good to have ‌five games to test ourselves against them and hopefully get a couple of good wins, some good results, but mainly hopefully find our combinations and get ourselves well oiled before the World ‍Cup,” Neesham added. While Neesham remains a T20 regular for ‌New Zealand he has not played for the national team in the 50-overs format since the 2023 World Cup. “I’m certainly still available currently for that format,” he said. “I haven’t quite decided what my future looks like internationally. I’ll probably have a think about that during this World Cup and probably make a decision one way or the other.” That uncertainty is compounded by New Zealand’s new casual contract system, introduced last September, that allows marquee players to play in lucrative T20 leagues while remaining available for international duty. Neesham, who played in the International League T20 with Dubai Capitals, said the system has left players in a “weird little limbo” ​by allowing them to join ‌events like Australia’s Big Bash and still arrive late for the World Cup under contract. The model risks weakening New Zealand if too many top players are absent, ‍he said. “You either have to have white-ball contracts specifically for these kinds of players that are actually worth a fair amount of money that will keep players available for New Zealand and in those formats, or you need to let guys go freelance and pick and choose whatever they want,” Neesham said. “Currently as things stand in New Zealand, there’s ​probably not the depth of players that will allow us to still compete on the international stage, if we have 10, 11, or 12 of our top guys not available. “It’s important that over the next major contract cycle or master agreement we have in New Zealand, it’s really fleshed out from that perspective to make the top T20 and one-day cricketers a bit more valuable from a financial point of view.” Neesham said that a proposed domestic T20 competition might entice players to accept New Zealand contracts and be involved fully with the international team. When asked about playing for 10 teams in seven franchise tournaments over the last three years has taught the allrounder all about embracing uncertainty, he said: “You just go tournament by tournament and hope to perform. Not having the security of a format means you have to be beholden to your performance a little bit more. Look, as professional athletes, everyone’s used to having to rely on themselves, be self-sufficient, and perform. So, it’s nothing too worrying.” New Zealand begin their World Cup campaign against Afghanistan in Chennai on February 8.

Captain Mohamed Salah scored after 124 minutes to clinch a 3-1 extra-time victory for Egypt over plucky minnows Benin in an Africa Cup of Nations last-16 thriller in Agadir Monday. Marwan Attia put the Pharaohs ahead in the second half and Jodel Dossou equalised for the Cheetahs, taking the match to an additional 30 minutes in the southern Moroccan coastal city. Yasser Ibrahim headed Egypt back in front in the first half of extra time, then Salah broke clear and beat goalkeeper Marcel Dandjinou with a shot from outside the area for his 10th AFCON goal. Salah, whose goals have helped Liverpool win many trophies, is seeking a first AFCON winners’medal, having twice been a runner-up. Record seven-time champions Egypt stay in Agadir to face title-holders Ivory Coast or Burkina Faso on Saturday in the quarter-finals. Egypt changed 10 of the team that drew with Angola in their final group match seven days ago with only midfielder Ibrahim Adel retained. Many AFCON teams assured of qualification for the knockout stage with a match to spare followed the example of Egypt and fielded sides composed largely of reserves. Benin lacked captain and former Premier League striker Steve Mounie, who had not recovered from an undisclosed illness. Egypt had a great chance to go in front after only eight minutes through Omar Marmoush, the 26-year-old who joined Manchester City at the beginning of last year from Eintracht Frankfurt. He darted forward from the Egyptian half, gained possession and stayed ahead of two pursuing defenders only to be foiled by Dandjinou, who blocked the ball with his legs, then grasped it. When Egypt threatened again soon after, centre-back Yohan Roche rescued Benin, clearing the ball as it was trickling toward the net. A collision between Mohamed Hamdy and Rodolfo Aloko led to a long delay, which ended with the Egyptian being carried off the field. Ahmed Aboul-Fetouh took his place in midfield. While Egypt had more possession in the opening half, Benin held their own and it took a superb sliding tackle from Hamdy Fathy to halt a Benin counterattack. An incident deep in added time illustrated how wary Benin were of Salah. When the captain gained possession just outside the box, he was immediately surrounded by three opponents. Dandjinou rescued Benin 10 minutes into the second half when he bravely parried a close-range shot from Ramy Rabia after the ball ran loose to the defender following a corner. As the match passed the hour mark, it began to open up. A Salah attempt to chip the ball into the net was foiled by leaping Dandjinou. Then, a parry from 37-year-old Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy prevented substitute Dossou giving Benin a shock lead. Attia ended the goalless stalemate when Marmoush pushed the ball back to the midfielder and, from just outside the box, he side-footed it into the roof of the net. Benin refused to accept defeat, though, attacked constantly and levelled on 83 minutes through 33-year-old Dossou. El Shenawy did superbly to palm a Mohamed Tijani cross away from his goal, but the ball fell invitingly for Dossou, and he pushed it into the net. Egypt regained the lead seven minutes into extra time, and this time Attia was the creator. He crossed after a short corner and a looping Ibrahim header evaded Dandjinou and landed in the net. Salah then put the outcome beyond doubt with his third goal of the tournament. 

Bangladesh will not play their Twenty20 World Cup matches in India after Mustafizur Rahman was released by his Indian Premier League team amid growing tensions between the countries, Bangladesh’s ‌cricket board (BCB) said Sunday. Kolkata Knight Riders said on Saturday ‌they had released the Bangladesh ‍bowler after being told to do so by India’s cricket board (BCCI). Bangladesh are scheduled to play three Twenty20 World Cup matches in Kolkata next month, with the February 7-March 8 tournament being co-hosted by India ‍and Sri Lanka, but the BCB said they are worried about their players’ safety. “Following a thorough assessment of the prevailing situation and the growing concerns regarding the safety and security of the Bangladesh contingent in India and considering the advice from the Bangladesh government, the Board of Directors resolved that the Bangladesh national team will not travel to India for the tournament ‌under the current conditions,” the BCB said. “In light of this decision, the BCB has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC), as the event authority, to consider relocating all of ‍Bangladesh’s matches to a venue outside India.” Earlier ‌Sunday Ministry of Sports said Bangladesh would not travel to India. “We welcome this decision taken in the context of the extreme communal policy of India’s cricket board,” said Nazrul, who added that he had instructed the board to request Bangladesh’s World Cup games be held in Sri Lanka. Last month, hundreds protested near Bangladesh’s High Commission in New Delhi after Hindu factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was beaten and set on fire in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district by a crowd that accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A total ​of 12 people were arrested ‌in connection with his death. WORSENED RELATIONSThe incident worsened relations between India and its neighbour, with ties already strained after Bangladesh’s ‍former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to New Delhi following protests against her. After Mustafizur’s release on Saturday, the BCB had held an emergency meeting before writing to the ICC to relocate their matches. “The board said that where a Bangladesh cricketer can’t play in India despite being contracted, the entire Bangladesh cricket team can’t feel ​safe to go to the World Cup,” Nazrul had said. Last year, the ICC allowed India to play Champions Trophy matches in the United Arab Emirates due to soured relations with hosts Pakistan. Sunday, cricket news site Cricbuzz reported that the BCB would ask the BCCI for a formal explanation regarding Mustafizur’s release. The ICC did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Bangladesh are due to play West Indies, England and Italy in Kolkata before ending the group stage against Nepal in Mumbai.

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae has backed the decision to play the Africa Cup of Nations every four years instead of two, saying that the change could benefit the development of football on the continent.“It can be a good thing if alongside that we do what we need to do for the development of African football,” he told AFP.The Cup of Nations has almost always been held at two-year intervals since the first edition in 1957 but Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe announced the change on the eve of the ongoing tournament in Morocco.Motsepe said that the tournament would go ahead every four years after the next two editions planned for 2027 and 2028, a decision that has been heavily criticised by some on the continent who see it as bowing to pressure from leading European clubs and FIFA.He said an annual African Nations League - along the lines of the UEFA Nations League - would instead be introduced to boost the coffers of national federations.“We are lucky in Africa now to have better infrastructure, better structured teams, better players, most of whom play for the best teams in Europe,” added Fae, who led the Elephants to the AFCON title in 2024.“Holding the AFCON every four years would mean having a major tournament every two years with the World Cup too, but there needs to be another major competition in Africa like the planned Nations League.“That would allow us to have games between teams like Morocco and Senegal every year, or Ivory Coast against Tunisia and Algeria against Mali.“And I don’t think that would penalise the smaller nations because I don’t know that them losing games 5-0 or 6-0 really raises the level of African football.“If they play against other teams of their level with the aim of being promoted, I think everyone will be a winner.”Meanwhile Fae admitted retaining the AFCON crown at the ongoing edition in Morocco is a hard task for his team.Ivory Coast are already through to the last 16 before playing their final group game today against Gabon.“There are eight or nine teams with squads that can win it, and I feel like teams play differently against us because we are the reigning champions,” Fae admitted.“That makes things even harder, but we are motivated to go all the way and we are confident too.”

Egypt rested ‌all their key players ‍but still kept up their unbeaten run at the Africa Cup of Nations, drawing 0-0 with Angola Monday to finish their Group B campaign on seven points.Egypt had already ‍confirmed top spot in the group before kickoff, allowing them the luxury of making 11 changes from their 1-0 win over South Africa on Friday, and giving players like Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush the day off. Angola finished third in the group but must wait to see whether they could advance to ‌the last 16 as one of the best four third-placed finishers. Their two-point haul means they have an anxious wait and will only advance if Comoros ‍and Zambia lose in Group A later ‌on Monday and Tanzania and Uganda are beaten in their last Group C matches on Tuesday. Angola had the better of the chances to win the game with Chico Banza’s 42nd-minute effort coming closest. He played a quick one-two with fellow forward Mabululu and held off two defenders but put his effort past the post. Mabululu had two shots on goal and captain Fredy shaved the outside of the post with a free kick early in the second half, after forcing a sharp ​save from Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa ‌Shobeir minutes before the break. Substitute Mbala Nzola had a run on goal in the 80th minute but hit the side ‍netting while a last-minute free kick from Manuel Benson went sailing over. French-based striker Mostafa Mohamed captained Egypt and set up a 20th-minute opportunity with a spectacular overhead kick from a corner that offered Hossam Abdelmaguid a chance to score from close range, but he headed ​over the crossbar. Substitute Ahmed Zizo could also have claimed the opener in the second half but was thwarted while in a good position. Egypt will stay in Agadir for their last-16 clash against one of the best third-placed finishers next Monday. South Africa, who beat Zimbabwe 3-2 in Marrakesh in the other Group B clash on Monday, ended second in the group with six points, and will play the runner-up in Group F in their last-16 tie in Rabat on Sunday.
