FIFA said Tuesday it plans to sell a stake in the business operations of the World Cup and its other competitions through the creation of a semi-private subsidiary.World football's governing body said it would retain a majority share in FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) but hoped to raise $4.2 billion later this year by "carefully selecting long-term investors who will purchase minority, non-controlling interests".FIFA's statement was a rapid response to a story in British newspaper The Times based on leaks of the plan from two sources.The Times reported that FIFA president Gianni Infantino, 56, stood to profit from the scheme by becoming commissioner of the FFE after his expected next term expires in 2031.The article also said discussion had started with potential investors.It named Joshua Kushner, brother of US President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared, as well as an arm of JP Morgan Chase, the US bank that attempted to finance the failed breakaway European Super League.

Midfielder Cristian Volpato, who played for Australia at the World Cup, allegedly tested positive for cocaine after being stopped for speeding twice in Sydney, according to multiple media reports.Volpato, 22, is a dual citizen of Italy and Australia who switched allegiances to the Socceroos just before this year's World Cup. He first was stopped for speeding at approximately 11:05 p.m. local time on Thursday on the Anzac Bridge in Sydney, per a statement by the New South Wales (NSW) police.A roadside breath test on Volpato came back negative, and he was issued an infringement notice for driving more than 20km/h (12.4 mph) over the speed limit.Just over two hours later, Volpato was stopped again on the same bridge, with the police allegedly clocking him at 50km (30 miles) an hour over the designated speed limit.In the second incident, another roadside breath test allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine, with a secondary sample of oral fluid taken for further analysis.Volpato also was given a second infringement notice for excess speed and had his international driver's license suspended for six months, per the NSW police. INQUIRIES WILL CONTINUEThe NSW police said their inquiries will continue."Football Australia is aware of allegations involving one of our players," the Australian soccer federation said in a statement. "We have been in contact with the player and continue to monitor the matter and support the player throughout this process."Volpato was born in Camperdown, New South Wales, Australia.Having played for Italy's junior national teams since 2022, Volpato changed his national eligibility to Australia in May before the 2026 FIFA World Cup teams were revealed. Per FIFA rules, the switch was legal because Volpato never played a competitive match for Italy's senior team.Volpato had four shots in three appearances for the Socceroos in this year's World Cup.Australia was competing in their sixth straight World Cup. After reaching the Round of 16 in 2022 for the second time in their history, Australia were eliminated on penalties by Egypt in the round of 32 this time around.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MOCI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development and Family and Qatar Tourism (represented by its marketing arm, Visit Qatar), announced the launch of the second edition of the "Purple Saturday" initiative. The program is part of ongoing national efforts to foster the inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities while providing a more accessible and comprehensive shopping experience.Held annually on the last Saturday of July, the initiative aims to offer discounts, special promotions, and enhanced services tailored to individuals with disabilities. This year's campaign will run from July 25 through August 1.According to a ministry statement issued today, the initiative seeks to create a suitable shopping environment that allows persons with disabilities to access goods and services easily and independently. By fostering principles of inclusivity and corporate social responsibility, the program encourages commercial establishments to adopt best practices that serve all members of society.The statement added that the initiative includes providing physical accommodations and accessibility services within commercial centers and retail outlets, alongside exclusive offers and privileges designed to enrich the shopping experience and promote social participation.The organizing bodies called on all commercial businesses to participate in this second edition by registering through the ministry's digital platform and completing the online application process.This initiative highlights the unified efforts of government entities and the commercial sector to develop a more flexible service ecosystem responsive to diverse community needs, ultimately establishing accessible, inclusive shopping standards for everyone.
