Arab leaders denounce Israel’s rogue actions at UN Security Council session

Arab and Islamic states expressed full solidarity with Qatar in the face of the Israeli attack on Doha on Sept 9, which targeted residential compounds housing the Hamas negotiating delegation and resulted in deaths and injuries.During the UN Security Council session to discuss the assault, Egypt’s representative Osama Abdel Khalek praised the State of Qatar’s relentless efforts, coordinated with Egypt and the United States, to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and bring peace and security to both Palestinians and Israelis. He said that Israel’s attack on a fellow Arab state was neither the first of its kind nor likely to be the last since the start of the Gaza crisis, stressing that it took place amid an ongoing act of genocide against the Palestinian people that must not be ignored.Abdel Khalek affirmed that international law and the UN Charter give Qatar and any Arab states subjected to similar Israeli attacks all the legal options needed to respond, and he insisted that the Security Council must not remain a bystander. He added that the strike clearly revealed which party is obstructing a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and is intent on prolonging the war for extremist political and religious goals aimed at displacing the Palestinian people and attempting to eliminate their cause. He called on the Council to immediately adopt a Chapter VII resolution to halt Israel’s aggression in Gaza and to support mediation efforts, concluding by saying that Egypt’s security is inseparable from Qatar’s.Speaking on behalf of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), Kuwaiti ambassador Tareq al-Banai reaffirmed the GCC’s full solidarity with Qatar and its absolute rejection of any violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, security, or stability. He said the GCC holds Israel fully responsible for this shameful act and its consequences, adding that it will not tolerate any threat to the security or stability of Gulf states. He warned of the consequences of continued violations of state sovereignty, stressing that Gulf national security is a red line and that any repetition of such acts would be met with stronger collective positions and firm political and legal measures within the framework of the international system. He added that the attack fits into Israel’s ongoing, systematic policies to destabilise the region and that this aggressive approach would face a united Gulf response with no compromise on sovereignty or security. On behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC), Turkish ambassador Ahmet Yildiz strongly condemned the Israeli strike on Qatar, describing it as an act of state terrorism and part of Israel’s systematic efforts to destabilise the region. He affirmed the OIC’s full solidarity with Qatar and its united support for Qatar’s right and duty to respond decisively to any violation or aggression threatening its security or regional stability. He urged the Security Council to act against the unjustified use of military force against Qatar’s sovereignty and to hold Israel accountable for this act of aggression.Iraqi ambassador Lukman Faily said that Israel was once again deliberately trying to drag the region and the world into a dangerous situation through its blatant attack on the Qatari capital, which he described as an act of state terrorism.Speaking on behalf of the Arab Group, he strongly condemned the strike on Doha, stressing that Israel’s repeated assaults amounted to aggression against the entire region and a flagrant threat to international peace and security. He urged the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities in response to these attacks.Faily said the current phase required redoubled efforts, placing the protection of civilians and the prevention of a wider war at the top of the agenda. He emphasised that safeguarding regional and international security demanded an immediate end to Israeli attacks, accountability for those threatening stability, and legal and political responsibility for what he called Israel’s reckless and irrational actions, along with all necessary measures to prevent further violations.Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said that the international community must act quickly and effectively to curb the arrogance of the Israeli government and protect the region from the catastrophic consequences of its actions. He described Israel’s leadership as a rogue government stained with the blood of innocents, steeped in extremism and hatred, indifferent to international law and human values, and relying on violence to impose racist ideology and achieve expansionist goals that threaten regional and global peace and security.Safadi said that Israel had launched a cowardly attack on Doha, a blatant betrayal of a country that has been working tirelessly, alongside Egypt and the United States, to secure a lasting ceasefire. He stressed that while Jordan seeks a just peace, there is currently no Israeli partner willing to achieve it.Diplomatic Adviser to the President of the United Arab Emirates Anwar Gargash also condemned what he called Israel’s blatant assault on Qatar. He described it as a serious violation of international law, including the UN Charter, and an irresponsible escalation that threatens regional stability and international peace and security.Gargash warned that the Security Council’s continued failure to act decisively against Israel’s repeated violations of the UN Charter’s core principles would have grave consequences for regional and global peace. He added that this unprecedented attack on Qatar severely undermines prospects for peace and for ending the war in Gaza. He noted that Qatar, along with Egypt and the United States, is playing a leading role in efforts to secure a ceasefire, release hostages and detainees, reunite them with their families, and resume large-scale humanitarian assistance. Gargash stressed that such reckless acts of aggression would not bring Israel or the region closer to the shared goal of peace, prosperity, and security, but would instead fuel further violence, extremism, and chaos at a time when restraint and de-escalation are urgently needed. He warned that ongoing threats of annexation and attacks on neighbouring states were destroying any foundation for lasting peace and endangering the stability of the entire region.

‘The madness has to end’: Long-time promoter of dialogue says ‘decent nations’ must ‘finally’ punish Israel for ‘indefensible outrage’ in Doha

Israel’s strike on a residential building In Doha on Tuesday was a “cowardly, treacherous act of war” that “cries out” for stronger efforts to end the war, a prominent Lebanese expatriate said in a statement after explosions rocked the Qatari capital.“This is an indefensible outrage, an unprovoked attack on a country that has done nothing but try to reduce tensions and help the region regain some semblance of stability,” said Roudi Baroudi, a high-profile executive, author, and energy expert who has spent years advocating for dialogue, diplomacy, and peaceful development across the Mena region.“This country and its government have done everything possible to help end Israel’s continuing wars, mediating ceasefire talks since the beginning of the conflict in Gaza, also helping to end the brief but exceedingly dangerous clash between Israel and Iran, and using its good offices to reduce tensions on several other fronts as well. Qatar’s leaders and diplomats have worked tirelessly, arranging several possible off-ramps that would not only have helped to spare the Palestinian and other peoples, but also to give Israel a way out of the corner its prime minister has painted it into. The Israelis should be thanking Qatar for having played such a diplomatic constructive and selfless role,” he added.“Instead, today, the Netanyahu government has carried out a cowardly, treacherous attack that cries out for the international community to finally step in and apply all the pressure at its disposal. History will not look kindly on a government that clearly seeks to prolong the war – and the suffering of the Palestinians and others – for no other reason than to keep itself in power . Those who fail to stand for the defenseless civilians who continue to die under Israeli bombardment and blockade will not escape the same historical judgment.”“The madness has to end, and for that to happen, all states with any influence over Israel have to use it,” Baroudi stated. “It must be made unequivocally clear that no state can conduct itself in this manner without inviting a swift and painful response from the decent nations of this Earth: stop arming it, stop protecting it, stop funding it, stop trading with it – stop everything unless and until it starts behaving itself.” We need peace for all.

Asean marks 58th anniversary with focus on sustainable upcycling

A unique exhibition showcasing innovative upcycling solutions marked the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean)’s 58th anniversary at M7 in Doha on Tuesday (September 9), highlighting the growing ties between Southeast Asia and Qatar in environmental stewardship. The celebration, themed *United in Sustainability, underlines the region’s commitment to a greener future and fosters a tangible demonstration of how creativity and technology can transform waste into everyday treasures, according to the Asean Committee in Doha (ACD).“Today, we mark the 58th anniversary of Asean, and the cross-partnership between Southeast Asia and the State of Qatar in advancing sustainability, heritage and innovation,” said Thai ambassador and ACD chair Sira Swangsilpa, spotlighting the exhibition, titled “Innovative Upcycling for Everyday Life”.The event was attended by HE Ibrahim Yousef Fakhro, the director of the Department of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Qatar, along with ambassadors from Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam, as well as other diplomats and guests. In his remarks, the envoy highlighted Asean’s commitment to sustainability, citing the establishment of the Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue in Bangkok in 2019.He noted that as Asean co-ordinator for sustainable development co-operation, Thailand actively promotes strong and inclusive partnerships to achieve global sustainable development goals. In Doha, Swangsilpa said that the ACD has contributed to Qatar’s sustainability agenda in alignment with Qatar National Vision 2030.This collaboration, he added, includes participation in events such as mangrove planting, a desert clean-up at the singing sand dunes, and tree planting initiatives under the “10 Million Trees” campaign.“This year, we are adding something new,” the envoy said. “The ‘Innovative Upcycling for Everyday Life’ exhibition builds upon Thailand’s showcase at the Earthna Summit earlier this year, demonstrating how waste materials such as plastic, agricultural by-products, and even marine debris can be transformed into eco-textiles, lifestyle items, packaging, and artisanal homeware.”Swangsilpa noted that such showcase illustrates Thailand’s bio-circular green economy model and its economic framework. He pointed out that the exhibition aims to prove that sustainability is not just an abstract concept but something tangible that can be incorporated into daily life. The envoy added that this also shows how the partnership with Qatar can flourish through creativity, environmental stewardship, and shared values. The exhibition underscores Thailand’s expertise and best practices in the circular economy, presenting creative solutions that convert waste into opportunities. It displays how science and design can offer viable, scalable alternatives to unsustainable consumption, integrating the circular economy into our daily routines.Dr Singh Intrachooto, chief adviser to the Research and Innovation for Sustainability Centre and an associate professor at Kasetsart University in Bangkok, addressed the common perception that upcycled products are always more expensive."Fifteen years ago it was the case, that when you recycle things, when you upcycle things the investment upfront cost was more,” he said. “But today’s technology have changed all that.”Dr Intrachooto shared the success of Kasetsart University's “Scrap Lab”, which over the past 15 years has transformed various wastes, including agricultural, plastic, automotive, food, and fabric waste, into innovative products.“There are no exceptions that every manufacturing processes will produce waste without exception,” he stressed. “If we don’t tackle this problem, soon we will be all overwhelmed with all these wastes like what we are facing now today.”Dr Intrachooto highlighted the diverse range of products on display, from items made from recycled drink straws to those crafted from fruit peels like mango and orange. He emphasised the importance of collaboration.“The theme today, *United for Sustainability, is the key because for me, as a designer... I could not do all of that... but this collaboration, with art and science, biologists, scientists, have turned a lot of these impossible things into new innovative materials,” the expert said.He added that the items on display are ready for the market.
