Al Duhail and Al Wakrah returned from the international break with important victories in the Qatar Stars League on Thursday. Duhail ended Al Shamal’s unbeaten start with a convincing 4-0 win while Wakrah edged Al Gharafa 3-2 with a stoppage-time winner.The results reshaped the upper half of the table, with Duhail moving up to third place with nine points and Wakrah securing their first win of the season to go to seventh with five points. Shamal dropped down one place to fourth with nine points, while Gharafa are 10th in the table.At Al Bayt Stadium, Al Duhail produced a dominant display to rout Al Shamal and hand them their first defeat of the campaign. Polish striker Krzysztof Piątek opened the scoring in the 14th minute, giving Duhail a 1-0 lead at half-time.The Red Knights then put the result beyond doubt with two goals in a five-minute spell after the break. Omar Sekou doubled their advantage in the 67th minute before Qatar international Almoez Ali made it 3-0 five minutes later. Mubarak Shanan completed the thrashing in stoppage time with a superb right-footed strike from outside the box that flew into the bottom corner. **media[501488]**At the Khalifa International Stadium, Gelson Dala scored twice, including a stoppage-time winner, as Al Wakrah edged Al Gharafa for their first victory of the season. Aissa Laidouni put Wakrah ahead in the 38th minute after capitalising on a defensive lapse and firing home from the edge of the box.Al Gharafa levelled through Ferjani Sassi, who headed home, before Yacine Brahimi converted a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time to put his side 2-1 ahead.Dala restored parity in the 78th minute after El Amin Zahzouh's penalty was saved by Al Gharafa goalkeeper Khalifa Ababacar. The ball struck the post and fell to Dala, who reacted quickly to score. The Angolan then struck again in the third minute of stoppage time, with his effort from inside the box slipping through Ababacar's grasp and into the net to seal a dramatic win for Wakrah. Sadd face Arabi Attention now turns to the top of the table, with leaders Al Sadd hosting Al Arabi at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium on Friday. Defending champions Sadd have won all four matches and lead the standings with 12 points after their 6-3 victory over Al Sailiya before the international break. Razvan Lucescu's side are aiming for a fifth successive win as they chase a fourth consecutive league title.Al Arabi are fourth on six points after one win and three draws. They drew 1-1 with Qatar SC in their previous match and will be looking to close the gap on the leaders.Sadd's preparations were affected by the Gulf Cup, with nine of their players involved with Qatar compared with two from Al Arabi.Lucescu said Sadd are ready for what he expects to be a difficult encounter. "Facing Al Arabi will be complicated, because they are a team that does not give up and fights until the last moment in every match they play, in addition to their players having high physical abilities, so Al Sadd players must be at their peak of focus in order to achieve victory."Al Arabi coach Cosmin Contra said facing the defending champions provided enough motivation for his players. "Facing the league champion and the best team of the last ten years in Qatar does not require additional motivation for the players; everyone has enough enthusiasm to play this kind of big game."Contra added that the break had allowed Al Arabi to regroup and work on their technical and tactical aspects. He said Al Arabi would look to maintain their strong start while becoming more clinical in front of goal.Meanwhile, second-placed Al Rayyan, on 10 points, face Qatar SC at Lusail Stadium today. Rayyan have won three and drawn one of their four matches and will be aiming for a fourth victory after beating Al Ahli 3-0 in their previous game. Qatar SC are 11th with two points from two draws and two defeats.FixturesOn Friday: Qatar SC vs Al Rayyan at Lusail Stadium | 5:45pm; Al Sadd vs Al Arabi at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium | 8:00pm On Saturday: Al Shahaniya vs Lusail at Khalifa International Stadium | 5:45pm; Al Ahli vs Al Sailiya at Al Thumama Stadium | 8:00pm

HMC launches Human Tissue Biobank in collaboration with Qatar Precision Health Institute

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (DLMP) at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has announced the launch of the Human Tissue Biobank, implemented in collaboration with the Qatar Precision Health Institute (QPHI).This strategic step builds on the achievements of the project's first phase and expands the Biobank's capabilities to include the storage and management of freshly removed biological tissue to support clinical care and biomedical research.This advanced phase follows the successful establishment and operation of the first phase of the Human Tissue Biobank by HMC's Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, which included the development of regulatory and operational frameworks and infrastructure required for the storage and management of tissue specimens in accordance with approved quality and governance standards. Human tissue biobanks are considered a fundamental component of modern healthcare and research systems. They provide high-quality biological specimens and associated data within advanced governance and regulatory frameworks. These resources support disease diagnosis, the development of personalized treatments, biomarker discovery, understanding disease mechanisms, and the acceleration of applied and translational research, ultimately contributing to improved healthcare quality and patient outcomes.Dr. Einas Al Kuwari, Chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at HMC, said: "Since the launch of the first phase of the Tissue Biobank project, we have focused on establishing an integrated system for the storage and management of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens to support clinical services and approved research projects. This phase has achieved significant results, with the Biobank currently housing at least 700,000 paraffin blocks and 2.6 million tissue slides, including at least 250,000 immunohistochemistry slides, and having supported at least 58 research applications during its first phase, including approved projects and those that have undergone or are undergoing review by HMC's Medical Research Center."She added: "Having established this strong foundation during the first phase, we are now preparing for a new and more advanced phase of the Biobank's work, expanding its services to include the storage and management of freshly resected biological tissue. This will open up broader opportunities for advanced diagnostics, precision medicine, and biomedical and translational research."This phase represents a significant expansion of the Biobank's capabilities, enabling the handling of freshly resected biological tissue through clear and structured pathways for clinical and research use, while maintaining a clear separation between the clinical and research pathways and full adherence to approved ethical and regulatory frameworks.Regarding the clinical pathway, Dr. Einas Al Kuwari explained that the Biobank will enable the storage of freshly resected tissue based on clinical needs and physicians' requests, supporting advanced molecular and genomic testing, next-generation sequencing (NGS), precision oncology programs, specialized predictive assays, as well as modern cellular and tissue-based diagnostic technologies.She added that these capabilities will help improve the accuracy of treatment decisions, expand access to advanced molecular and genomic testing, and support access to more advanced diagnostic solutions as part of the evolving landscape of personalized healthcare and precision medicine.On the research end, the new phase provides advanced capabilities for storing freshly resected tissue specimens for approved research projects, offering researchers an advanced national platform to support biomedical and translational research. All studies will continue to undergo ethical and regulatory review through the Medical Research Center, in accordance with the institutional policies and regulations in place at HMC.The Human Tissue Biobank continues to uphold the highest ethical and regulatory standards around informed consent, data privacy, specimen quality and integrity, and compliance with approved regulations and policies. The Biobank complements HMC's existing research governance framework and does not replace or bypass the established ethical approval and regulatory oversight managed by the Medical Research Center.The transition to this advanced phase reflects the close collaboration between HMC and QPHI in developing Qatar's national infrastructure for precision medicine and biomedical research. The new capabilities of the Tissue Biobank are expected to enable advanced diagnostic echnologies, expand translational research, and accelerate the development and implementation of precision medicine solutions, addressing current and future healthcare needs and strengthening Qatar's position in biomedical research and personalized healthcare.

The Qatar Boat Show expects a bigger third edition in November, with local boat builders’ participation projected to rise 30% and organisers aiming to surpass last year’s 27,000 visitors. The four-day event, scheduled for November 4-7 at Old Doha Port, is expected to attract more exhibitors, international companies and boats, reflecting growing interest in Qatar’s marine leisure and boating sector. Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of a press conference announcing the sponsors and partners of the Qatar Boat Show, Old Doha Port chief operating officer Mohamed al-Atwaan said that organisers are anticipating a stronger turnout from both exhibitors and visitors. “This year we are expecting a greater number of visitors and even a greater number of participants and exhibitors,” he said, adding that further details about participating companies and the number of boats on display would be announced in the coming weeks. A key highlight is the anticipated increase in local boat builders, whose participation is expected to grow by 30% compared with last year. Al-Atwaan also said that more than 70% of last year’s participants are returning for the upcoming edition, indicating continued interest in the event. Organisers are also hoping to expand the international presence and display more boats, with details expected to be announced one to two weeks before the event. The second edition welcomed more than 27,000 visitors over four days, setting a benchmark the organisers hope to exceed. Beyond the exhibition itself, the programme will include side events and hospitality offerings designed to enhance the experience for visitors and exhibitors. “Hopefully this year we break this record,” al-Atwaan said, adding that the additional activities and hospitality would offer visitors “a different experience and an elevated one” at the third edition.
