Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education has announced the winners of the Qatar Scientific Excellence Award 2026, with 108 candidates selected from a total of 371 applicants.The results were approved by the award's Board of Trustees, chaired by Her Excellency Minister of Education and Higher Education Lolwah bint Rashid AlKhater. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Maryam Abdullah al-Muhannadi, the award's chief executive, said the number of winners reflected strong competition and the high quality of submissions, as well as growing awareness of the award's criteria and standards.She said the results showed a notable diversity in the educational institutions represented by the winners, including students from public, private and specialised schools, as well as civilian and military universities and colleges. This, she added, highlighted the spread of a culture of excellence across Qatar's education sector.Al-Muhannadi noted that the overall success rate was in line with the average of the past five editions, underlining the consistency of the evaluation methodology. She also pointed to the role of supportive family environments, saying that in some cases more than one member of the same family had won, in accordance with the award's criteria.She stressed that only candidates who achieved the required scores were selected, following a comprehensive assessment process that included file reviews and interviews, ensuring fairness, transparency and equal opportunities.Congratulating the winners, al-Muhannadi said this year's edition had attracted strong interest and high-quality participation, reinforcing the award's status as a national platform that promotes excellence, quality and innovation. She also praised candidates who were not selected, saying that applying for the award itself demonstrated ambition and a commitment to excellence.The main award ceremony will be held under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, on Feb 15, 2026, marking 20 years since the launch of the award. The award aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly its human development pillar, by investing in national talent and fostering an educational environment that supports creativity, innovation and sustainable development. 

The National Archives of Qatar and the National Records and Archives Authority of Oman Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in the field of records and archives.The agreement reflects the deep fraternal relations between the two countries and their shared commitment to developing collaboration in this vital sector.The MoU was signed by Secretary-General of the National Archives of Qatar, Dr Ahmed Abdullah al-Buainain and Chairman of the National Records and Archives Authority of Oman, Dr Hamad bin Mohammed al-Dhawyani.The memorandum seeks to preserve national memory and develop mechanisms for its protection and safeguarding in line with best practices and professional standards, ensuring its sustainability and transmission to future generations. This comes within the framework of a shared vision to advance documentation practices and preserve historical records.The agreement also underscores the keenness of both sides to enhance bilateral cooperation in the fields of records and archives, exchange expertise and knowledge, contribute to the development of modern documentation systems, keep pace with digital transformation requirements, and support scientific research.Abdullah al-Badr, Head of the International Cooperation Department at the National Archives of Qatar, said in an exclusive interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA) that the memorandum of understanding signed between the National Archives of Qatar and Oman’s National Records and Archives Authority focuses on preserving the rich documentary heritage of both countries. He added that it also aims to coordinate cooperation in participating in regional and international meetings and organisations, in a manner that serves the interests of the two brotherly nations.He noted that the signing of the memorandum falls within the broader framework of joint bilateral cooperation between Qatar and Oman, as well as within the context of joint Gulf and Arab cooperation.On the sidelines of the signing ceremony, the National Archives of Qatar organised a tour for the Omani delegation of its exhibition, during which they reviewed a selection of prominent documents highlighting the significance of national heritage.The tour also included a presentation on several future projects being developed by the National Archives of Qatar, focusing on advancing modern documentation systems and facilitating access to documents for researchers and other interested audiences.The National Archives of Qatar seeks to enrich intellectual activity and document the history of the State, while organising, collecting, preserving, and supervising documents and archives in accordance with the provisions of Law No. (7) of 2023 concerning Documents and Archives. It also aims to enable access to information, records, and documents and facilitate their use by establishing standards and policies governing the management of public, private, historical, and national documents in the State.The Archives is responsible for identifying documents of historical value held by ministries, other government entities, or individuals, as well as documents and archives located abroad. It also determines the mechanisms for acquiring and transferring such documents and archives, or obtaining copies or reproductions thereof.Meanwhile, the National Records and Archives Authority of Oman aims to prepare specialists and enhance their capabilities through comprehensive scientific training programme, facilitate access to archives, support scientific research and its publication, and encourage scientific, intellectual, and artistic research through the optimal use of archival materials.  

Qatar Charity in 2025 implemented high-quality development projects in Somalia, with 990 projects across seven key sectors, benefitting 528,233 people at a total cost of over QR 122,560,732.Qatar Charity implemented 233 projects for food supply and food security pegged at QR 7,412,886, benefitting 267,585 people.These included providing in-kind food assistance and food vouchers, implementing Iftar and Udhiyah projects, and supporting refugees and internally displaced persons in addition to implementing food programmes in partnership with the World Food Programme, which contributed to improving temporary access to food and reducing food consumption gaps.In the water and sanitation sector, 76 projects were implemented, benefiting 49,900 people, at a total cost of QR 3,389,050. The projects focused on drilling shallow and deep wells, establishing water purification plants, implementing solar-powered systems, and delivering potable water to displaced persons' communities, reducing health risks and improving public health conditions.In the health sector, Qatar Charity implemented 24 health projects, benefitting 143,051 people, at a cost of QR 9,791,300. They included building and equipping health facilities, performing general and specialised surgeries, treating critical cases, supporting blindness prevention programmes, and providing medical equipment and supplies, which enhanced access to basic and specialised healthcare services.Interventions also included projects in the social housing and shelter sectors with the implementation of 15 projects, benefiting 34,370 people at a cost ofQR7,026,259. These projects focused on building housing units and an integrated village, providing tents for displaced families and installing solar-powered lighting systems, contributing to improved living conditions and housing for the most vulnerable groups.Qatar Charity implemented 23 projects in the education and culture sector, benefitting 3,196 people at a cost of QR 3,362,072. Activities included building and renovating schools, equipping classrooms, and supporting educational and religious institutions, in addition to graduating 185 university students, enhancing capacity and improving the quality of educational services.The economic empowerment sector saw the implementation of 603 projects, benefitting 5,850 individuals, at a cost of QR 9,204,250. Interventions focused on supporting income-generating activities, providing small means of production, and equipping shops, contributing to improved family income, social cohesion, and reduced reliance on humanitarian aid.The social welfare sector constituted the largest component in terms of funding. Qatar Charity implemented 16 projects, benefitting 24,456 individuals, at a cost of QR82,374,914. Interventions included disbursing cash assistance to sponsored individuals, implementing the Eid clothing project and providing tools and supplies for people with disabilities, thus contributing to providing them with a dignified life and supporting their social integration. The total number of sponsors in Somalia is 23,613, with orphans topping the list at 20,861 including 1,234 needy families, 755 students, in addition to sponsoring 581 teachers and 182 people with special needs. 

The Qatar National Library (QNL) is organising a discussion session as part of its 'Book Talk' series, titled, Wonder and Loss: A practical memoir for writing about grief on January 26.The session will feature British author and researcher Sam Meekings, who will discuss his new book of the same title.The book explores the author’s personal experience with loss, blending autobiography with honest narrative. It also offers a practical guide to writing, exploring how writing can be a tool for coping with grief, preserving memories, and rediscovering oneself through storytelling and reflection.The session will highlight the power of writing as a human means of expression and healing, and its role in transforming painful experiences into meaningful texts. It will also open a dialogue on the relationship between creativity and deep human emotions. 

The State of Qatar has welcomed the efforts of the legitimate Yemeni government to support the Yemeni dialogue process and address the Southern issue. In this regard, Qatar commended the request of the President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council to convene a conference in Riyadh to discuss just and sustainable solutions to the issue, reflecting his commitment to dialogue as the optimal approach to addressing national challenges.In a statement issued Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed the State of Qatar's appreciation to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for hosting this conference, as part of its continued efforts to support initiatives aimed at achieving security and stability in the Republic of Yemen.The Ministry stressed the importance of the constructive and responsible participation of all Southern components in the upcoming Riyadh conference, in a manner that prioritizes the supreme interests of the Yemeni people. It also underscored the necessity of adhering to the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference, which represent the consensual framework and comprehensive reference for reaching an inclusive political solution that fulfills the aspirations of all segments of the Yemeni people, while safeguarding Yemen's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.The Ministry of Foreign Affairs cautioned that unilateral declarations or actions taken outside the framework of consultation, consensus, and serious dialogue among Yemeni parties would risk exacerbating instability and chaos, thereby harming the interests of the brotherly Yemeni people and undermining prospects for a sustainable political settlement.The Ministry reaffirmed the State of Qatar's full support for all regional and international efforts aimed at advancing the political process, ending the Yemeni crisis through dialogue and peaceful means, and contributing to the security and stability of Yemen and the region.

Saud al-Marri, runner-up in the first and second rounds, emerged as the winner of the third and penultimate round of Qatar Freestyle Championship.Rashed al-Banna secured his first podium finish of the season by taking second place, while Abdullah al-Qahtani, winner of the previous two rounds, settled for third place in this round. Ahmed al-Musned, who had finished third in the previous two rounds, missed out on the podium this time after finishing fourth, while fifth place went to competitor Ahmed al-Banna.The third and penultimate round of championship, held under the patronage of chairman of Qatar Racing Club (QRC) His Excellency Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad al-Thani, witnessed intense competition amid a large crowd that filled the grandstands.**media[400493]**Registration and technical inspection were conducted last Thursday to ensure the cars’ readiness to compete in accordance with a number of criteria and conditions adopted by the championship’s organizing committee, which all competitors are required to meet. These included vehicle-related requirements such as equipping the car with a roll cage, securely fixing the battery, and having an effective safety belt, among other points, as well as competitor-related requirements centered on safety elements such as racing attire, helmet, and the like.According to the competition format, each competitor is given a single opportunity to enter the track and perform exhibition maneuvers, including drifting, reverse driving, the knot maneuver, and the “rios” maneuver, within a total time not exceeding four minutes. There is also a dedicated score for the overall style of the competitor’s performance.The championship will now enter a relatively long break before returning for its final round at the end of next April. 

The Qatar Calendar House on Thursday said that planet Earth will reach the closest point in its orbit around the Sun — known as perihelion—on the evening of the day after tomorrow, Saturday, 14 Rajab 1447 AH, corresponding to 3 January 2026. At that time, Earth will be at an approximate distance of 147 million kilometers from the Sun, about five million kilometers closer than it was in July of last year.Dr. Bashir Marzouq, an astronomy expert at the Qatar Calendar House, stated that Earth reaches perihelion at the beginning of January each year, while it reaches the farthest point in its orbit around the Sun-known as aphelion-during the month of July.He noted that variations in the distance between the Earth and the Sun are not the cause of climatic changes on Earth's surface. Rather, this variation plays an important role in determining the lengths of the four astronomical seasons. He emphasized that this phenomenon is entirely natural and has no negative effects on the inhabitants of the planet, contrary to claims made by non-specialists.Dr. Marzouq further pointed out a striking paradox: despite Earth being closest to the Sun in January, which corresponds to winter in the Northern Hemisphere, temperatures are low. Conversely, when Earth is farthest from the Sun in July—summer in the Northern Hemisphere, temperatures are high. This is due to the angle of incidence of solar radiation. In winter, the Sun's rays strike the Northern Hemisphere at a more oblique angle, causing them to pass through a longer path in the atmosphere and lose a significant portion of their heat. In summer, the Sun's rays fall more directly, traverse a shorter atmospheric path, and therefore retain more of their heat. The situation is entirely reversed in the Southern Hemisphere.It is worth noting that Earth, like the other planets, orbits the Sun in an elliptical (oval-shaped) path, with the Sun located at one of the two foci of the ellipse. Consequently, Earth has the nearest point in its orbit called perihelion and the farthest point known as aphelion.
