His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani honoured Qatar University (QU) students Sunday in recognition of their academic efforts and outstanding achievements across various fields during the 19th cycle of the Education Excellence Award.This achievement underscores QU’s commitment to its strategic vision of preparing an aware and capable generation that contributes meaningfully to society and the labour market. It reflects the university’s efforts to provide an integrated educational environment that strengthens foundational knowledge, fosters research and scientific thinking skills, and promotes creativity and innovation.In the Excellence Award for University Graduates, the platinum medal was awarded to Latifa Saad Salem al-Ajlan al-Kaabi, Abdulrahman Hashem Bu Hashem al-Sayed, Dana Abdullah Mohammed al-Mansouri, and Maryam Nasser al-Jafali al-Nuaimi. The gold medal in the same category was awarded to Jeham Hilal Jeham al-Kuwari, Tamadur Yousef Hassan Jassim al-Shaib, and Shahad Abdullah Hassan al-Abdullah. In the Excellence Award for Doctorate Holders category, the platinum medal was awarded to Dr Ahmed Ali Ahmed al-Kuwari.Expressing his appreciation for the honour, Abdulrahman al-Sayed, platinum medal recipient in the University Graduates category, extended his sincere thanks to QU for its contribution to his achievement, noting its strong role in supporting students throughout their academic journey and preparing them to contribute effectively to national development.Jeham al-Kuwari, a gold medal recipient in the same category, expressed his happiness at the recognition and dedicated the victory to everyone who supported him during his studies. He highlighted the University’s important role in providing the academic support that enabled his accomplishment.Tamadur al-Shaib, also a gold medal recipient in the University Graduates category, said the award had been a goal since the beginning of her studies. She explained that Qatar University helped prepare her for this honour by offering opportunities to participate in local and international programmes, including a fellowship at the United Nations in New York and a peace conference in Bangkok, as well as several university conferences and initiatives. She encouraged students to take advantage of available academic and research opportunities.Dr al-Kuwari, platinum medal recipient in the Doctorate Holders category, described the recognition as a source of pride for every researcher striving to support national progress. He added that despite the challenges of his research journey, the University provided a supportive academic environment and infrastructure that were instrumental to his success. 

Kuwaiti Amir Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah received His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad al-Thani, President of the Olympic Council of Asia and President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, during his official visit to Kuwait. During the meeting, the Kuwaiti Amir extended his congratulations to HE Sheikh Joaan on his election as President of the Olympic Council of Asia, affirming Kuwait’s full support for the relevant institutions and for the OCA in a manner that contributes to further strengthening and advancing the sports movement across the Asian continent.HE Sheikh Joaan was also received by Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled al-Hamad al-Sabah, who congratulated him on his election and wished him continued success in serving and elevating the Asian sports movement.

Visit Qatar, in partnership with the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) and the Qatar Triathlon Federation, has announced the opening of registrations for the Qatar T100 Triathlon World Championship Final 2026, set to take place in Qatar on December 11–12.Building on the momentum of a highly successful debut in 2025 that welcomed thousands of participants and reached global audiences, the 2026 edition invites triathletes of all levels to take part in one of Qatar’s flagship international sporting events.Athletes can register to compete in either the signature 100km race, featuring a 2km swim, 80km cycle and 18km run; or the Sprint Distance triathlon, comprising a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run. Participants can register for the Sprint Distance race at https://t100triathlon.com/qatar/participate/Athletes who placed in the top 10 of their respective age-group categories at the 2025 edition will also receive invitations to compete in the 2026 T100 Age Group World Championship Finals. Among those set to return is Qatari triathlete Alya al-Hamad, who finished an impressive fourth in the 25–29 female category last December. 

The Qatar Anti-Doping Agency (QADA), in collaboration with Qatar University (QU), announced the launch of the first specialised anti-doping research grant for the 2026–2027 period, fully funded by the agency.This initiative is part of the agency’s commitment to advancing specialised scientific research and supporting evidence-based policies and programmes, thereby strengthening the integrity of sport, protecting athletes’ health, and developing the anti-doping system at both national and international levels.**media[416012]**The grant aims to support four high-quality research projects, including two scientific studies in relevant fields of science, medicine, pharmacy, and technology related to anti-doping, and two social research projects examining the behavioural, cultural, and environmental factors influencing athletes and the sports ecosystem. The best proposals will be selected according to rigorous competitive criteria to ensure quality outputs and their applicability and suitability for scientific publication.Prof Aiman Erbad, QU’s vice-president for Research and Graduate Studies noted that the research grant represents a strategic investment in multidisciplinary research that connects medical, pharmaceutical, technological, and social sciences, enabling a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of doping issues in the sports context.He added that co-operation with the QADA reflects an advanced model of partnership between research institutions and specialised national entities, directing research toward real priorities and practical challenges, and enabling researchers and graduate students to produce original knowledge with practical impact and publishable outcomes, supporting the development of innovative and sustainable solutions for the sports system.Dr Nasser al-Saad, the CEO of QADA, said: “This research grant represents a pivotal milestone in the Agency’s journey to strengthen specialised scientific knowledge, uphold the integrity of sport, and support decisions and policies grounded in scientific research. We are proud of our partnership with Qatar University as the national university, which enhances the empowerment of national research talent and reinforces Qatar’s position as a leading regional and international hub for specialised scientific research in anti-doping.”The grant is open to academic researchers and graduate students at QU, reaffirming the Agency’s commitment to innovation, building national research capacity, and ensuring that research outcomes are published in accordance with the highest recognised scientific standards. 

Ideal Indian School (IIS) organised Qatar National Sport Day (NSD) with a wide range of sports and fitness activities to celebrate the nation’s commitment to health and wellness. The event aims to encourage students and staff to participate in physical activities and promote an active lifestyle.The Department of Physical Education coordinated various sports, games, and fitness programmes to foster a culture of regular exercise and make sports an integral part of daily life. The celebrations witnessed enthusiastic participation from students of both morning and evening sessions across all sections — Boys, Girls, Junior, and Kindergarten — along with active involvement from teaching and non-teaching staff. Students actively took part in events such as the Scooter Rally, Circuit Run, Roller Skating, and Bicycle Rally, reflecting their spirit of sportsmanship and commitment to healthy living.Acting principal Mohammad Azam Khan K, along with the heads of Sections, officially flagged off the Roller Skating and Bicycle Rally. Hundreds of students enthusiastically took part in bicycling, skating, and a sports awareness walkathon. The event aims to promote environmental awareness and emphasise the importance and health benefits of regular physical activity and sports participation across all campus.School staff, including teachers, administrative and transport staff, actively participated in various competitions. The Male Staff Volleyball Competition and the Ladies’ Dodge Ball Competition were conducted with great enthusiasm. The winners were awarded trophies by the acting principal, and Ibrahim, head of Transport.Students of Ideal Indian School also participated in the Half Marathon Race organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee at Lusail Boulevard as part of NSD. As many as 67 participants from the Boys’, Junior, and Girls’ Sections successfully completed the race and were awarded medals.

Qatar Indian Masters emerged as overall champions at the Community Sports Meet, organised by Expats Sportive in celebration of Qatar National Sport Day. Excelling in both track and field events, they secured 147 points to claim the title. KL 10 Legends finished second with 117 points, followed by Calicut Sports Club with 108 points. Syro Malabar Cultural Association and Kia Qatar placed fourth and fifth, respectively.Held at the Aspire Zone Warm-Up Track and Field with the approval of the Qatar Sports for All Federation, the meet featured around 750 athletes competing in 37 events across athletics and games. Competitions included 100m, 200m, 800m, and 1,500m races, 4×100 relay, long jump, high jump, shot put, arm wrestling, tug of war, shootout, and cricket bowling.The event also showcased a vibrant march past, with cultural performances including Oppana, Kolkali, Chenda Melam, martial arts displays, and tableaux celebrating the diversity of India and Qatar. Harish Pandey, First Secretary at the Embassy of India, received the salute, and Qatari-based athletes who have represented India internationally were honoured.Distinguished guests included Abdul Aziz al-Mohannadi (Community Police), Mohammed Nasser al-Kaldi (Kahramaa), ISC president EP Abdul Rahman, ICC general-secretary Abraham Joseph, ICBF general-secretary Deepak Shetty, and several community leaders and organisation representatives.Individual champions included Abdunnasar Kuniyil (Calicut Sports Club, Masters men 50+), Mahroof (KL 10 Legends, men 20–35), Kannan Santos (Qatar Indian Masters, men 35+), Lincy Sukumaran (Qatar Indian Masters, women 20–30), and Surya Suresh (Qatar Indian Masters, women 30+). Syro Malabar Cultural Association received the Best Team award, and Muhsin Omassery (Calicut Sports Club) was named Best Team Manager.Prizes were distributed by a host of dignitaries, including leaders from Indian Sports Centre, Expats Sportive, Pravasi Welfare, ICC, and various community organisations, supported by the organising committee. 

The Qatar Stock Exchange Thursday gained about 13 points on the back of foreign institutions’ strong buying interests.The insurance, consumer goods, banking, real estate and telecom counters saw higher than average demand as the 20-stock Qatar Index rose 0.11% to 11,515.81 points, recovering from an intraday low of 11,427 points.The Gulf institutions were seen increasingly net buyers in the main bourse, whose capitalisation added QR0.32bn or 0.05% to QR686.55bn mainly on microcap segments.The Gulf individuals turned bullish in the main market, whose trade turnover and volumes were on the rise.The local retail investors’ weakened net selling had its influence on the main market, which saw as many as 2,179 exchange traded funds (sponsored by AlRayan Bank and Doha Bank) valued at QR6,546 trade across five deals.However, the domestic institutions were seen net profit takers in the main bourse, which saw no trading of sovereign bonds.The Islamic index was seen outperforming the other indices in the main market, which saw no trading of treasury bills.The Total Return Index rose 0.2%, the All Share Index by 0.22% and the All Islamic Index by 0.29% in the main bourse.The insurance sector index shot up 0.66%, consumer goods and services (0.63%), banks and financial services (0.54%), realty (0.42%) and telecom (0.32%); while industrials and transport declined 0.98% and 0.05% respectively.As many as 22 gained, while 27 declined and four were unchanged.Major gainers in the main market included Widam Food, Mesaieed Petrochemical Holding, Dukhan Bank, QIIB, Qamco, Qatar Islamic Bank, Woqod, Qatar Insurance and Vodafone Qatar.In the juniour bourse, Techno Q saw its shares appreciate in value.Nevertheless, about 51% of the traded constituents were in the red with major losers being QLM, Industries Qatar, Mannai Corporation, Doha Bank, Mekdam Holding, Aamal Company, Mazaya Qatar and Nakilat.The foreign institutions’ net buying increased substantially to QR556.2mn against QR58.24mn the previous day.The Gulf institutions’ net buying strengthened noticeably to QR14.29mn compared to QR6.84mn on February 11.The Gulf individual investors turned net buyers to the tune of QR1.18mn against net sellers of QR5.41mn on Wednesday.The local retail investors’ net selling declined perceptibly to QR72.56mn compared to QR83.72mn the previous day.However, the domestic funds were net sellers to the extent of QR490.08mn against net buyers of QR16.98mn on February 11.The Arab retail investors turned net sellers to the tune of QR5.08mn compared with net buyers of QR4.69mn on Wednesday.The foreign individuals were net profit takers to the extent of QR3.96mn against net buyers of QR2.26mn the previous day.The Arab institutions had no major net exposure compared with net sellers to the tune of QR0.14mn on February 11.The main market saw a 37% jump in trade volumes to 230.68mn shares to more than double value to QR964.09mn but on 50% contraction in deals to 21,482.In the venture market, a total of 0.79mn equities valued at QR1.64mn changed hands across 205 transactions.
