Brighton knock out Man United, Arsenal’s Martinelli hits hat-trick

Manchester United crashed out of the FA Cup with a meek 2-1 home defeat to Brighton Sunday as Gabriel Martinelli’s hat-trick fired Arsenal to a 4-1 win at Portsmouth to reach round four. United interim boss Darren Fletcher could only watch on in horror as the Red Devils’ last chance of silverware this season and likely his chances of landing the job until the end of the season went up in smoke at Old Trafford. Fletcher’s men were left to rue not making more of a positive start before Brajan Gruda fired the visitors in front on 12 minutes from Danny Welbeck’s cross. The roles were reversed midway through the second half as Welbeck lashed into the top corner against his former club. There were persistent chants targeting United co-owners the Glazer family and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe as the discontent at Old Trafford grew. And any hope those in charge of the club had for a bounce following the removal of Ruben Amorim has proved very short-lived. Benjamin Sesko’s late header set up a grandstand finish, but it proved too little, too late for Fletcher. A red card for teenager Shea Lacey in stoppage time for dissent rounded off United’s miserable afternoon. Martinelli shrugged off the backlash to his clash with stricken Liverpool defender Conor Bradley as Arsenal reached the fourth round for the first time in three years. Championship side Portsmouth were dreaming of an upset against the Premier League leaders when they went in front after just three minutes through Colby Bishop. Mikel Arteta had made 10 changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Liverpool on Thursday. Martinelli drew stinging criticism for trying to push Bradley off the pitch in the closing stages after the Northern Irishman hit the ground with a serious knee injury. Liverpool confirmed the right-back will need surgery and will miss the rest of the season. The Brazilian apologised to Bradley after the game and did not seem affected by the furore at Fratton Park. “That’s personality, come in and talk on the pitch,” said Arteta. “To play for a big club you need a big personality because it can be that (being at the centre of a controversial incident), it can be an action that you miss, it can be something that costs you a game, and three days later there is a game, so you need to lift yourself up and make it count.” Arsenal could rely on their threat from set-pieces to turn the tie around. The Pompey lead lasted only five minutes as Andre Dozzell turned into his own net under pressure from Christian Norgaard. Martinelli then flicked in the first of his three goals before Noni Madueke missed the chance to make it 3-1 from the penalty spot when the England international fired wide. Gabriel Jesus teed up Martinelli to kill the tie off early in the second period before he completed his hat-trick from another Arsenal corner. West Ham eased the mounting pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo as new signing Taty Castellanos scored his first goal for the club to beat QPR 2-1 after extra-time. Castellanos has been signed to dig them out of trouble at the bottom of the Premier League and the £26mn arrival from Lazio bulleted home a header from Crysencio Summerville’s cross to secure a much-needed win. Leeds needed a second-half fightback to beat Derby County 3-1 and book their place in the fourth round. League One Mansfield held off Sheffield United to book their place in round four with a 4-3 win at Bramall Lane. Norwich, Hull and West Brom also progressed to the last 32.

Poland stun the U.S. to set up United Cup summit clash with Switzerland

Poland exacted revenge for their loss to the United States in last year's final, beating the defending champions in their last-four tie at the United Cup to set up a title clash with Switzerland, who beat ‌Belgium in their semi-final Saturday.Hubert Hurkacz stunned world number nine Taylor Fritz in ‌the men's singles to give Poland ‍the lead, before Coco Gauff beat Iga Swiatek to level the tie. But Poland prevailed in the mixed doubles decider, where Katarzyna Kawa and Jan Zielinski beat Gauff and Christian Harrison.Hurkacz, ranked 83rd in the world, avenged his loss to Fritz in last year's final ‍in a 7-6(1) 7-6(2) win, after taking the lead in both tiebreaks with well-placed backhand passing shots to beat his second top-10 ranked opponent this week."Definitely pleasantly surprised... in seven months, (this is) my first tournament. So coming back from such a long period the first time in my life, you never know what to expect," said Hurkacz, who also beatworld number three Alexander Zverev on Monday when he returned from an injury layoff.World number four Gauff got the U.S. back in the ‌game, beating Swiatek 6-4 6-2, as the American's powerful shots forced the world number two to stay near the baseline and make mistakes with her backhand returns.Gauff, however, could not complete her team's comeback, as Kawa and Zielinski ‍won 7-6(5) 7-6(3) in the mixed doubles, ensuring Poland's progress ‌to Sunday's final."I'm so proud of our team... I gave everything that I had. It means a lot, it's a great victory for us," Kawa said. BENCIC STEERS SWITZERLAND TO VICTORYBelinda Bencic led Switzerland to their first United Cup final, beating Elise Mertens in the singles before returning alongside Jakub Paul to clinch a doubles win.In the deciding mixed doubles match, the Swiss duo claimed a 6-3 0-6 10-5 win over Mertens and Zizou Bergs in an hour and 17 minutes.Bencic and Paul coasted through the first set but won a total of just 12 points in the second set as the match went into a tiebreak.The Swiss pair did well to shake off their collapse and refocus, taking five points in a row to give themselves a 9-4 lead and then crossing ‌the finish line when Bergs netted a return."It's easy to find the energy with this team. It's just great to play with Belinda. I mean, just hats off to her ‍to play almost three hours and then come out again for the doubles," Paul said.The tie was played in gruelling conditions as temperatures hovered around 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).Earlier, Bergs needed an energy-sapping two-and-a-half hours on court to beat Stan Wawrinka 6-3 6-7(4) 6-3. Bergs took the first set with ease but was pushed hard in the second as the Swiss captain rallied to level the match.Bergs found himself down 40-0 on Wawrinka’s serve at 4-3 in the third set, but the Belgian clawed his way back and claimed a decisive break.In the tie's first match, Bencic kept alive her undefeated run at the tournament as she beat Elise Mertens 6-3 4-6 7-6(0) and put Switzerland in front.Bencic, a former Olympic gold medallist, has won all four singles and all four mixed doubles matches during the United Cup."It feels like 170 kilos fell off my shoulders - I was so stressed; I really wanted to do well, and today I felt so much pressure to not let my team down," Bencic said."I was really focused on myself, on breathing, and I'm super happy that I stayed tough in the important moments."

Man Utd coaching job was not in wildest dreams, says Fletcher

Manchester United interim coach Darren Fletcher said Tuesday he did not think he would manage the club in his “wildest dreams” as he prepares for his first game following the sacking of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese was axed on Monday after 14 months at Old Trafford after an explosive post-match interview following his team’s 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday. Under-18s coach and former United player Fletcher was put in charge for today’s match at Burnley and faced the press for the first time Tuesday. The former Scotland international is expected to remain in place until the club appoints a caretaker boss, with United planning to name Amorim’s permanent successor at the end of the season. Fletcher, 41, said the past 24 hours at Old Trafford had been “surreal”. “It’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team,” he said. “I don’t even think it was in my wildest dreams that that was something that could potentially happen, even thinking about playing for the club and stuff like that. But to lead out the team is an amazing honour and something I am really proud to do. It’s not (happened) in the circumstances that I expected it to happen so that obviously is something that doesn’t sit quite easy with me, but I just have to think I’ve got a job to do and I’ve got to lead the team tomorrow and think of the great honour and pride in doing that.” Fletcher said conversations with the club’s hierarchy had focused on today’s game against struggling Burnley and they would speak again after the match. Fletcher, United’s technical director between 2021 and 2024, was asked whether he wanted to try to earn the manager’s job on a full-time basis. “Honestly it’s not something I’ve thought about,” he said. “I’m focusing on Burnley. I think that discussion is for after the game. There has been that much going on and it has all happened so quickly that all my concentration, efforts and thoughts have gone into Burnley.”

Gauff loses as US reach United Cup quarter-finals

World number four Coco Gauff suffered her first-ever defeat at the United Cup Monday when she was stunned by Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 6-1, 6-7 (3/7), 6-0 in a blow to her Australian Open preparations. But after Taylor Fritz won to level the tie for the United States, Gauff made amends with Christian Harrison in the mixed doubles, beating Ivonne Cavalle-Reimers and Inigo Cervantes 7-6 (7/5), 6-0 to seal a quarter-final spot. Gauff had won all six of her previous United Cup singles matches for the USA and had a 3-0 record in mixed doubles. It was the first win over a top-five player for Bouzas Maneiro. “I know Coco and she’s a fighter,” the 42nd-ranked Bouzas Maneiro said in Perth. “She’s there all the time in the match, so I knew that I had to be there. Even if you are 3-0 or 4-0 up, you have to be ready.” World number four Fritz, who is battling a knee problem, needed more than three hours to beat Jaume Munar 7-6 (7/4), 3-6, 7-6 (8/6). “I was getting exhausted late in the second set, I had to unload five or six shots just to win a single point,” said Fritz, who saved a match point in the third set tiebreak. “I started feeling my knee towards the end but it didn’t get any worse. It was not bad enough to stop me from playing through.” Bold win for HurkaczIn Sydney, Germany’s world number three Alexander Zverev was also on the end of a shock United Cup result, beaten 6-3, 6-4 by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, who had not played since June because of knee surgery. “It’s been a while since I’ve been competing. Seven months I’ve been going through difficult times with the team and it was very challenging,” Hurkacz said. “We went through a long period of time not competing and not knowing when we would be able to be back on court again. “I was just trying to cherish and enjoy every moment here on the court today.” Former world number six Hurkacz has tumbled to 83rd in the rankings but faced just one break point in his 83-minute victory. “I was serving quite well. I was finding nice spots, so that’s definitely a nice feeling to really have good rhythm on the serve,” Hurkacz said. “Just so pleased with the performance and just also so much fun to see the fans again.” Swiatek fights backIga Swiatek closed out the tie for Poland defeating Eva Lys in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 fightback. Earlier the Czech Republic knocked out Norway with a 3-0 win in Sydney. Greece swept to an unassailable 2-0 lead over Britain as Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Billy Harris 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7/4) and Maria Sakkari beat Emma Raducanu for the first time, stopped the 2021 US Open champion 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. ‘Fed up with losing’“I got fed up with losing tight matches like this,” two-time Grand Slam finalist Tsitsipas said of his victory. “I used all of my power to make sure it did not happen again. “I’ve not played such a high-quality match in a long time.” The Australian Open starts on January 18.

Amorim sacked by Man Utd after 14-month reign

Ruben Amorim was sacked by Manchester United on Monday, bringing a dramatic end to his turbulent 14-month spell as manager of the struggling Premier League giants.The dismissal of the Portuguese follows growing tensions with Old Trafford bosses, including director of football Jason Wilcox, over recent days.The club, sixth in the Premier League table after a 1-1 draw at Leeds on Sunday, issued a statement saying Amorim had "departed his role as head coach of Manchester United", thanking him for his service."The club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change," United said in their statement."This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish."Current under-18s coach Darren Fletcher, a former United midfielder and technical director between 2021 and 2024, will take charge of the team against struggling Burnley on Wednesday.The BBC said the club were planning to appoint a caretaker boss for the rest of the season.Names in the frame for the full-time job include Enzo Maresca, who left Chelsea last week, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and former England manager Gareth Southgate.Rising tensionsAmorim had hinted at deep frustrations on Friday, suggesting he was not being fully backed in the transfer market.And he made a string of eye-catching comments after Sunday's draw at Elland Road, where he stressed he was United's manager rather than "just the coach".The Portuguese told the scouting department and Wilcox "to do their job" during a blockbuster end to a post-match press conference that raised major doubts over his future.And he repeatedly suggested to the media that he would leave when his contract expired in 18 months' time.But reports on Monday said United's decision to axe their manager was due to the lack of progress rather than a power struggle.The dismissal is a dismal end for Amorim, who won just 25 of his 63 games at United in all competitions during the shortest reign for a permanent manager since David Moyes was sacked just eight months into his tenure in 2014.He had the worst win ratio (32 percent), the worst goals-conceded-per-game ratio (1.53) and the lowest clean-sheet ratio (15 percent) of any United boss in the Premier League.Amorim arrived at Old Trafford to replace Erik ten Hag in November 2024 as one of the most sought-after coaches in world football following a successful stint at Sporting Lisbon, where he won two league titles.But he was powerless to stop United's slide to a 15th-place finish in the Premier League - their worst campaign for 51 years - at one stage describing his team as "maybe the worst" in the history of the club.Amorim had the chance to end the 2024/25 campaign on a high in Bilbao but United lost the Europa League final against Tottenham and missed out on European football this season as a result.The club backed their manager in the summer transfer window, spending more than £200 million ($269 million) on new signings including Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha.But they have again flattered to deceive, winning just eight of their 20 league games so far and falling 17 points behind leaders Arsenal.Amorim has been hit by injuries and a number of players are on Africa Cup of Nations duty but he has been criticised for sticking rigidly to his preferred 3-4-3 formation despite evidence it was not the best fit for his players.His exit leaves the club searching for their seventh permanent manager since the retirement of Alex Ferguson, who left as a Premier League champion in 2013.Since then, apart from the occasional cup success, the 20-time English champions have been also-rans, overshadowed by bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

UN: Sudan's El Fasher city appeared almost deserted

The United Nations stated that UN staff who entered El Fasher, western Sudan, last Friday for the first time since the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control last October, found the city almost deserted.Denise Brown, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, explained in a statement Monday that it was impossible to determine the exact number of people remaining in El Fasher. She noted that the people UN staff saw were living inside abandoned buildings or in makeshift camps made of simple plastic sheeting.She noted that negotiations regarding the UN's demands for safe passage and freedom of movement had lasted several weeks, while the visit itself only lasted a few hours. She added, "The city wasn't teeming with people. There were very few people we were able to see."Brown explained that the visit aimed to assess whether El Fasher could be safely accessed while the UN explored ways to deliver essential supplies to the city. She added, "But frankly, we remain deeply concerned about the wounded, whom we haven't been able to see, and who may be in detention."She said that during the visit, medical staff were observed at the Saudi hospital in the city, but they had no supplies. She also pointed out that the World Health Organization had previously reported that the hospital was the site of a massacre in which 460 people were killed.Survivors had previously reported mass killings motivated by ethnicity and widespread arrests during and after the city's capture. The fate of many people in El Fasher and the surrounding areas remains unknown.It is worth noting that more than 100,000 people have fled El Fasher since late October, after the RSF seized control following an 18-month siege.
