Waste to wealth: New technologies target Qatar’s green economy

Qatar could unlock new revenue streams from waste through technologies that convert food scraps and biomass into compost and alternative fuels, as green solutions gain importance in the country’s sustainability drive.Speaking to Gulf Times on the sidelines of the sixth Recycling Towards Sustainability Conference and Exhibition, organised by the Ministry of Municipality, Katina Aghayan, CEO of Kingdom Konsultate, highlighted the potential of waste-to-fuel technologies, clean biodiesel and smart recycling systems to reduce emissions while creating economic opportunities.Kingdom Konsultate is a specialised consultancy that works on sustainability strategies, climate technology, and solutions to tackle greenwashing. Aghayan said the company has worked with Qatar’s municipal sector for more than six years, introducing technologies that support the country’s environmental objectives.“We do end-to-end solutions. We’re the only one in the region that does strategies, and we also have an arm in technology for climate tech,” she said.Aghayan said one key area the company was promoting was converting biomass waste into alternative energy, including biofuel, biodiesel and bio-LNG.In her conference presentation, titled around the concept of “waste to fuel”, she planned to explore how waste could be transformed into a valuable resource rather than becoming an environmental burden.She also highlighted the potential to scale up green industries and develop commercial models that make sustainability financially viable.“How we can take this very rich biomass that we have as waste and turn it into a revenue stream and reduce pollution in the environment,” she said, describing the opportunity.Aghayan also revealed that Kingdom Konsultate had signed an exclusive partnership with a Saudi partner to introduce B100, a 100% biodiesel product intended to support decarbonisation and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Another technology attracting attention at the exhibition is CompoBot, a Hungarian innovation introduced to the Qatari and wider Middle Eastern markets through Kingdom Konsultate’s exclusive partnership.The robotic system processes food waste into compost while allowing users to monitor their environmental impact.“What it does actually is recycle the food, and it turns it into compost,” Aghayan said.The system can also communicate with users and track how much waste and emissions have been reduced. Its mobile application allows the technology to be used in settings including homes, offices and lounges.Beyond food-waste management, Aghayan said the company was introducing solutions in water recycling, microalgae, biofuel production and emissions reduction, working with public and private sector organisations.She said these technologies aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly its environmental sustainability objectives.“We are trying to really help our public sector and private sector to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030,” she said.Aghayan also stressed the importance of collaborating with government bodies, including the Ministry of Municipality and the Ministry of Environment, to advance sustainable practices.For Qatar, the opportunity lies not only in reducing the amount of waste sent for disposal, but also in treating waste as a resource that can support alternative energy, lower environmental impacts and create new economic value.As sustainability technologies develop, initiatives such as those showcased by Kingdom Konsultate underline the growing focus on practical solutions that connect environmental responsibility with commercially viable outcomes.

Qatar infrastructure provides base for Gulf-China trade expansion

Qatar’s extensive investments in physical infrastructure have built substantial industrial capacity, but converting national logistics foundations into direct commercial access requires the private sector to bridge the operational gap for international trade.WareOne for Logistics Solutions co-founder and CEO Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al-Thani made the statement in the wake of the 11th Belt and Road Summit in Hong Kong, where he signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Oscar Hui, CEO of NEXX Global Limited, establishing a partnership to help Chinese companies enter and operate across the Gulf using Qatar as their base.Sheikh Khalifa pointed out that Qatar’s state-of-the-art facilities require private enterprise solutions to become fully accessible operational entry points for foreign businesses.“Qatar has built remarkable foundations — the port, the airport, the free zones. Our work in the private sector is turning that infrastructure into something a company can actually use,” Sheikh Khalifa said.Sheikh Khalifa said Qatar’s scale and connectivity make it an effective entry point for companies expanding into the wider Gulf. “Qatar is compact enough to prove a model quickly, sophisticated enough to prove it seriously, and connected enough to scale it across the GCC.”He noted that international companies expanding into the Middle East are shifting from shipping goods from origin to establishing local inventory and operating within the region.“Chinese companies have expanded significantly across the Middle East in recent years, with major e-commerce platforms growing alongside electric vehicle, technology and consumer businesses. The pattern is shifting from export to establishment: companies that previously shipped goods from China are increasingly holding inventory in the region and selling locally.“That shift changes what they need. Freight capacity is no longer the constraint. Operating capability is ... warehousing close to the customer, compliant customs clearance, local delivery to Gulf service standards, returns handling, and the regulatory knowledge that differs across the six GCC markets,” Sheikh Khalifa explained.The logistics sector represents a priority cluster under Qatar’s Third National Development Strategy (NDS3) 2024–2030, which aims to diversify the economy and build regional supply chain capabilities.Sheikh Khalifa stressed that optimising these supply chains yields immediate economic benefits for local businesses and Qatari consumers.“The coverage of Gulf–China trade tends to focus on Chinese companies entering the region. The domestic benefit is less discussed and arguably more immediate. Qatari importers, distributors and retailers source extensively from China.“Every inefficiency in that chain — a container held at origin, a shipment split across three providers, a customs delay, a return that cannot be processed locally — is a cost that is eventually carried by the Qatari business and, ultimately, by the Qatari consumer,” he said, adding that consolidating those movements, holding stock in-country, and clearing goods through a single accountable operator removes cost and time from the chain in both directions.Sheikh Khalifa noted that the MoU is not only about helping Chinese companies reach Gulf consumers, but about giving Qatari businesses easier, faster, and cheaper access to Chinese manufacturing and Chinese products, as well as giving Qatari consumers more choice delivered more quickly.The MoU signing ceremony was witnessed by Sheikha Noora Khalifa al-Thani, consul general of Qatar in Hong Kong; Si Junjie, China director of Invest Qatar; Nicholas Ho, commissioner for Belt and Road of the Hong Kong SAR Government; and Houston Guobin Huang, founder and chairman of NEXX Global Limited.Under the terms of the agreement, the two logistics firms will integrate NEXX’s procurement and brand network in China with WareOne’s regional warehousing, customs clearance, fulfilment, and last-mile delivery services.

Milaha makes strategic realignment of business segments to drive sustainable growth

Milaha (formerly Qatar Navigation), the industry-leading provider of maritime and logistics solutions in the region, is strategically realigning its business segments to deliver a more integrated platform that better serves customers and drive sustainable growth. As part of this initiative, Milaha has restructured its operational and financial reporting segments to align more closely with its strategic priorities and the Qatar National Vision 2030 across three principal sectors: energy, trade, and national resilience. “This realignment leverages the group’s assets and capabilities to deliver a more integrated platform that better serves customers,” the company said in a communique to the Qatar Stock Exchange. This realignment strengthens Milaha’s strategic coherence, enhances operational focus, and positions the group to drive sustainable growth across its core sectors. The financial reporting under the revised segment structure will commence effective the first quarter of 2026. The changes impact two of its five business segments: Maritime & Logistics and Trading. The Maritime & Logistics segment will now comprise container shipping, ports, and logistics operations. These interrelated businesses will form the foundation for an integrated global trade and logistics platform to provide seamless, end-to-end supply chain solutions. As the main Qatari owned container shipping operator, Milaha connects key regional and international trade lanes, complemented by full-service logistics capabilities spanning freight forwarding, cross-border transport, customs clearance, and advanced warehousing infrastructure. The Trading segment will be replaced by the new marine and technical services segment, focusing on delivering comprehensive end‑to‑end solutions to vessel owners and operators, aimed at enhancing asset efficiency, reducing total cost of ownership and supporting national resiliency efforts. The Marine & Technical Services segment will encompass shipyard operations, ship management, and ship services- including bunkering, ship chandlering, shipping agency, and marine lubricants. Milaha’s remaining three business segments will remain unchanged. The Gas & Petrochem segment will continue to focus on marine shipping and transportation, and the operation of floating storage and offloading (FSO) units. The Offshore segment will continue serving the energy sector through a diversified fleet of offshore vessels, lift boats, and subsea assets that are complemented by our EPCI and industrial logistics capabilities. The capital segment will remain dedicated to financial and real estate investments.

Japan is of the view that diplomatic solutions and self-restraint are the most important steps to avoid any escalations in the ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the region, noted the Japanese ambassador to Qatar. “Japan shares Qatar’s view that diplomatic solutions and self-restraint are key to avoiding escalation in the current crisis. Accordingly, Japan is actively engaged with the diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation,” said Naoto Hisajima, ambassador of Japan, Thursday. Hisajima was addressing a virtual gathering at the “Diplomatic Dialogue Series” organised by Hamad Bin Khalifa University. He said Japan imports about 90% of its oil from this region and therefore, it is one of the countries most affected by this situation. “Japanese foreign minister had made a telephone phone call with His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani and appreciated Qatar’s diplomatic efforts to mediate conflicts in the Middle East, including this current situation. He also stated that Japan has strongly urged Iran to cease actions, and condemned Iran’s actions on civilian facilities, and also actions that threatened the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. He had expressed grave concern of retaliatory attacks and damages caused in the neighbouring countries, including Qatar. He also noted that the Japanese foreign minister had expressed his country’s intention to co-ordinate and co-operate with Qatar on various matters, including the early settlement of the situation, and securing the safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The envoy said that Japan had contacted Iran several times suggesting de-escalation of the situation. “We had explained Japan’s position and urged Iran particularly for the safe passage of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Japan and Iran have had a very long relationship, and reflecting on them, our government has had a direct contact with Iran after this situation took place and repeatedly reiterated our positions to Iranian counterparts,” he explained. Hisajima stated that Japan had also conveyed to the Iranian minister about Japan’s position that Iran’s development of nuclear weapons can not be allowed. He highlighted Japan’s effort to co-ordinate with the international community to make all necessary diplomatic efforts to resolve issues surrounding Iran, including nuclear issues. “And Japan is continuing to engage in various diplomatic activities in order to de-escalate the situation and ensure the passage of safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Japan’s diplomatic efforts also include the joint statement on the Strait of Hormuz, which was issued on March 19. It was a statement jointly by 38 countries so far, an initiative taken by the United Kingdom and other countries,” he added.
