With the focus of grooming a new generation of healthcare leaders in the country and the region, the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST)’s College of Business, in collaboration with the Telfer School of Management at the University of Ottawa, has launched a new executive master’s programme. The new Executive Master of Health Administration (EMHA) was launched Monday at an event on the university premises. The event was attended by Ministry of Public Health director (Non-Communicable Disease Prevention Programmes) Sheikh Dr Mohammed bin Hamad al-Thani, World Health Organisation country director Dr Rayana Ahmad Bou Haka, UDST president Dr Salem al-Naemi, and academic leaders, decision-makers, healthcare experts, and professionals. Officials from leading public and private healthcare facilities in the country were also present on the occasion. Dr al-Naemi told Gulf Times that the programme aims to groom the healthcare professionals to executive leaders. “This programme helps to groom the skills of healthcare professionals such as nurses and doctors to become leaders in their field,” he said. “This will help in advancing the skills of these professionals. Initially, we will be admitting around 20 candidates for the programme, and later the number might go up.” Bachelor’s degree holders with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and with five years of full-time professional experience are eligible to apply for the programme. Applications for the inaugural cohort of the programme are now open, with the programme set to welcome its first group of students in the upcoming academic cycle. Dr Vincent Mangematin, the dean of the UDST’s College of Business, emphasised the significance of the partnership and the programme’s contribution to Qatar’s healthcare ecosystem. “Here in Qatar, we are witnessing a healthcare sector that is flourishing, deeply dynamic and rapidly evolving,” he said. “Our nation benefits from state-of-the-art equipment, world-class medical installations and highly qualified medical and paramedical teams.” “The launch of the Executive Master of Health Administration reflects our commitment to developing highly skilled leaders capable of advancing healthcare systems and driving innovation across the sector,” Mangematin continued. “Through our partnership with the University of Ottawa, we are providing healthcare professionals with access to world-class education that supports Qatar’s national priorities and strengthens the future of healthcare management.” The Executive Master of Health Administration combines academic excellence with practical, industry-focused learning, equipping experienced healthcare professionals with the strategic, leadership, and system-level capabilities needed to lead change in complex healthcare environments. University of Ottawa vice-dean (Graduate Professional Programmes) Dr Greg Richards highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing emerging healthcare challenges and preparing leaders to navigate an increasingly complex healthcare landscape. “We take a great deal of pride in graduating students who make a difference,” he said. “Many of our graduates have gone on to become chief executive officers and senior leaders in healthcare institutions across Canada.” Graduates of the programme will earn dual degrees from the University of Ottawa and UDST, providing them with internationally recognised credentials and a global perspective on healthcare leadership.

If sitting one of India’s most difficult exams ​wasn’t trying enough, more than ‌2 million medical school candidates are now experiencing severe stress ‌as they have to do it ‌again Sunday through no fault ‌of their own.They initially sat the exam on May 3 but authorities ended up scrapping the results after allegations on social media that there had been leaks of the question paper in advance. Only 5% to 6% of students taking the exam, known as the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, secure seats at medical schools. “This examination drains us mentally. We put in years of hard work, and then the paper gets leaked and ​results are cancelled,” said Alima Javed, a 20-year-old student from Srinagar who plans to resit the test. The controversy has triggered a slew of student protests in New Delhi and ‌other cities, with hundreds of students turning out ​per demonstration, becoming a political headache for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ​administration. Some media and opposition politicians have also asserted that the debacle has led to some student suicides, though such claims are difficult to verify. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has said authorities will ensure a “fair and transparent” re-test. To that end, the government has ordered a temporary block on the messaging app Telegram until the exam is over, though that move has drawn criticism from free speech activists. Friday, Telegram lost its bid to overturn ‌the ban, with an Indian ‌court ruling that the government’s actions were legal and reasonable. The block only affected Telegram, with the government arguing that the app represented a unique case, citing its anonymity features and its easy recreation of blocked channels. Authorities have launched a multi-agency probe into the alleged leak, with investigators seeking to pin down its origin and examining financial transactions linked to suspected cheating networks. Arrests have been made in several states, Indian government officials have said, and they warn ​of tougher penalties for those involved in exam malpractice. The government has also announced steps to tighten exam security, including enhanced monitoring at centres, stricter controls over question paper handling and the use of digital tracking systems. But many students say the measures have done little to ease the pressure. “I was very happy with my last attempt,” said Aliya Jalaal, 20, adding that the retest has left her so anxious that she has sought psychiatric help.

 A fire tore through a dormitory at a girls' secondary school in a town in Kenya's Rift Valley overnight, killing at least 16 students, the government said yesterday.The fire broke out just after midnight at the Utumishi Girls' Academy Senior School in Gilgil in west-central Kenya and burned for more than two hours, Education Minister Julius Migos told reporters.He said that 79 other students were injured, although 71 of them had already been discharged from hospital.Students at the school are aged between 15 and 18 years."Investigations are ongoing, but the... cause of the fire is not yet identified," Migos said.Speaking to reporters at the school, Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen urged people not to speculate on the cause of the fire.However multiple survivors told first responders that a student had lit a mattress with a match, said one first responder, who asked not to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media.They did not know what the student's motive might have been.Authorities say they are still investigating the cause of the fire."Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost their beloved daughters," President William Ruto said on X, describing it as an "unimaginable tragedy".Fires are common at Kenyan schools, with more than 100 recorded in 2024, according to the government.Many fires are set by students protesting harsh discipline and poor conditions, researchers have found.Doors on the second floor where the fire started were initially locked and some students died while jumping out of the windows, the first responder said.The fire broke window panes and left the walls of the school stained with smoke.Outside the school yesterday, hundreds of family members gathered to seek news of their loved ones.Injured students could be seen, some limping with bandaged limbs, others carried by police officers.Local resident Wambui Nderitu said she had rushed to the school at around 4am to look for her aunt's daughter."Fortunately, I found her child, but she was slightly injured. She told me she was on a lower dormitory, which is how she managed to get out," Nderitu told local broadcaster Asulab TV. "Many of those who were upstairs jumped from the balcony.”Another local resident Leah Wanjiru told Asulab TV: "I heard children screaming... so I went outside to check and saw that the school was on fire. We started fetching water, trying to help put out the fire and rescue people."A distraught mother, Leila Matura, 52, said her 18-year-old daughter was still missing."We went to the hospital to see if she is there, she is not there. So they are telling us, she is not around, she is among the missing," she told AFP. "Whether she is dead or alive, we do not know. I'm hopeless."Another mother, who did not wish to be named, said her 17-year-old daughter was in hospital."She broke both her legs jumping from the window. Thank God she is strong. It is every mother's nightmare," she said.The school is linked to the National Police Service and most pupils are the children of officers."When we arrived, the fire was still blazing. It was so big... it took about 45 minutes to extinguish the flames because of the mattresses inside," a firefighter, who identified himself only as Fred because he was not authorised to speak to the press, told AFP.A fire in 2024 at a primary boarding school in nearby Nyeri County killed 21 students. Its cause was never conclusively established.In the worst school fire of recent times, 67 schoolboys were killed in 2001 at Kyanguli Secondary School outside Nairobi, an incident the authorities attributed to arson.

A Ugandan court has sentenced a man to death for killing four young children this month at a nursery school, in an attack that sparked public outrage and concern for pupils' safety in the East African country.The judge said an investigation of Christopher Okello Onyum's phone and laptop had found searches including "schools near me" and "ISIS beheading", a reference to the Islamic State group.However, it was not clear if there was any political or religious motivation for the attack.In the attack, which took place on April 2 at a nursery school in the capital Kampala, 39-year-old Onyum stabbed his four victims – toddlers aged two and three years old – before a guard subdued him, police said.Angry parents tried to lynch him before he was detained.Prosecutors said Onyum, who holds Ugandan and US citizenship, confessed to the crime, believing the "human sacrifice" would help him become rich, although he eventually pleaded not guilty in court.The court earlier heard chilling testimony, including from a staff member at the Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre."At first I thought he was beating a child. When I asked him why he was beating our children, before he responded I saw Kaisha (one of the victims) against a wall in the pool of blood," she told the court at the start of the trial."He got up and he had a knife in his hand. He was so quick that he immediately grabbed another child."I got one of the bicycles the children used. I threw it at him."When I threw the bicycle at him he left the child and started running after me. I ran but I later fell down. When I got up I found out he had cut the second child."The victims' parents also gave evidence, describing their last morning with their children before taking them to kindergarten, the phone call informing them of the attack and the discovery of the bodies at the hospital.One of Onyum’s lawyers had argued that he should be acquitted because he had long been mentally unstable and had been committed to a psychiatric hospital."I have no doubt in my mind that the search for 'ISIS beheading' prepared the accused person to launch this fatal attack," Judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha said while delivering the sentence.She rejected his lawyer's assertion that Onyum was insane, saying that his attack, which took less than seven minutes, had been carefully planned.Onyum was seen laughing in the dock during his trial, which his lawyer said showed he was mentally ill.Although Uganda still hands down the death penalty for serious offences such as murder, the last execution was carried out roughly two decades ago.
