US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an announcement was possible later Sunday on a deal with Iran that could formally end the Middle East war, insisting goals had been met."I do think perhaps there is the possibility that in the next few hours the world will get some good news," Rubio told reporters in New Delhi.Rubio, who is on his first visit to India, said the emerging deal would address US President Donald Trump's concerns on the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has largely blocked in response to the US-Israeli attack.The agreement would also start a "process that can ultimately leave us where the president wants us to be, and that is a world that no longer has to fear or worry about an Iranian nuclear weapon", he added.His remarks came after Trump said a proposal that included opening the Strait of Hormuz had been "largely negotiated"."An Agreement has been largely negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the various other Countries," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday. Asked about the criticism, Rubio said "no one has been stronger" among US presidents against Iran by launching the war, codenamed Epic Fury."When this conflict began with Iran, the goals were outlined, they were very simple, they were very clear -- we were going to destroy their navy, which was done," he said. Rubio said the United States also aimed to "significantly reduce" Iran's ability to fire ballistic missiles and to "do damage to the defence-industrial base" of the country."Those were the objectives of Epic Fury. Those objectives were achieved," Rubio said.

Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir was due in Tehran Thursday for fresh talks aimed at salvaging stalled efforts to end the US-Israeli war on Iran, as President Donald Trump warned that negotiations were on the "borderline" between a deal and renewed strikes.US Secretary of State Marco Rubio however, voiced cautious hope of progress. "I believe the Pakistanis will be travelling to Tehran today. So hopefully that'll advance this further," he told reporters.Iran's ISNA news agency said Munir's visit was aimed at continuing "talks and consultations" with Iranian authorities, without providing further details. Three sources told Reuters the army chief — a powerful figure with a growing role in Pakistan's foreign relations — was possibly heading to the Iranian capital for a new round of mediation."We're speaking to all the various groups in Iran to streamline communication and so things pick up pace," one source familiar with the negotiations said. "Trump's patience running thin is a concern, but we're working on the pace at which messages are relayed from each side."Pakistan hosted in April the only direct negotiations between US and Iranian officials since the war began on February 28. Munir was at the centre of the action during that round, greeting both delegations on their arrival and displaying remarkable bonhomie with US Vice President JD Vance. But the talks ultimately did not lead to a breakthrough, with Iran accusing the US of making "excessive demands".A ceasefire on April 8 halted the fighting launched weeks earlier by the US and Israel, but no lasting peace agreement has been reached. "It's right on the borderline, believe me," Trump told reporters on Wednesday. "If we don't get the right answers, it goes very quickly. We're all ready to go." He said a deal could come "very quickly" or "in a few days", but warned Tehran would have to provide "100 percent good answers".The deepest splits remain over Iran's stockpile of near-weapons-grade enriched uranium and control of the Strait of Hormuz. Trump vowed Washington would not allow Iran to retain the material. "We will get it. We don't need it, we don't want it. We'll probably destroy it after we get it, but we're not going to let them have it," he said.Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei has, however, issued a directive that the uranium should not be sent abroad, two senior Iranian sources said. Top officials in Tehran believe shipping the material out would leave Iran more vulnerable to future US-Israeli strikes. The sources said "feasible formulas" remained, including diluting the stockpile under IAEA supervision.Tehran's chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf accused Washington of preparing fresh attacks, warning of a "forceful response". Iran's foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran was studying the latest US points while reiterating demands for the release of frozen assets and an end to the US naval blockade.The impasse continues to batter the global economy. The Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries about a fifth of the world's oil and LNG, remains largely shut, with Iran allowing only a trickle of vessels through under a new toll regime. US crude rose 3.22% to $101.42 a barrel, while Brent climbed to $107.71. The International Energy Agency warned the market could enter the "red zone" in July and August. The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation cautioned that a prolonged closure could trigger "a severe global food price crisis".Rubio also criticised Nato allies for refusing to back Trump's campaign. "He's not asking them to commit troops...But they refuse to do anything. We were very upset about that." 

Pope Leo XIV will meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday, the Vatican said Monday, just weeks after serious criticism of the pontiff by US President Donald Trump.The private visit with the top US diplomat, who is a Catholic, will take place at 11:30 am (0930 GMT), according to a calendar published on the Vatican's media site.A Vatican source on Sunday confirmed for AFP Italian media reports that the meeting was an attempt to "thaw" relations between the leader of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics and the US government.Rubio is also expected to meet Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani while in Rome, according to an Italian government source on Sunday. Rubio had also asked for a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, one of Trump's closest European allies, against whom he turned after she defended the pope, the source added.Leo has increasingly spoken out against international conflicts and the politicians waging them, and last month issued his most forthright critique yet of the Trump administration's actions.Thursday's visit will be the second time that the pope and Rubio have met. The secretary of state was received at the Vatican with US Vice President JD Vance in May 2025, just days after Leo was elected pope. 

US President Donald Trump announced a new class of heavily armed warships that will be named after himself - an honour usually reserved for leaders who have left office. Two of the Trump-class ships will be built initially, but that number could grow substantially, according to the president, who said they will be "some of the most lethal surface warfare ships" and "the largest battleship in the history of our country." Trump made the announcement at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida alongside Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Navy Secretary John Phelan, with images of the planned high-tech vessels on stands nearby.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Israel's moves to annex the West Bank threaten the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. In response to the Knesset's preliminary approval of two bills aimed at imposing Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank and one of the settlements, Rubio added that this would threaten President Donald Trump's plan to end the conflict in Gaza. Regarding Trump's announcement of the cancellation of a summit scheduled to be held with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Budapest, Rubio confirmed that the United States still wants to hold meetings with Russia.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in Washington with his Liberian counterpart Sara Beysolow Nyanti to discuss deepening US-Liberia bilateral relations and expanding US commercial engagement in Liberia.  In a statement, the US State Department said that Rubio and Nyanti explored avenues for expanding US participation in Liberia's critical minerals sector with the aim of creating jobs and economic growth in both the United States and Liberia.

I mean, it takes some time," Rubio told NBC.Hamas on Sunday called for a swift start to a hostage-prisoner exchange with Israel, as negotiators from both sides prepared to meet in Egypt for crucial talks aimed at ending the nearly two-year war in Gaza.Foreign ministers from several countries, including Egypt, said the talks were a "real opportunity" to achieve a sustainable ceasefire."Hamas is very keen to reach an agreement to end the war and immediately begin the prisoner exchange process in accordance with the field conditions," a senior Hamas official told AFP on condition of anonymity.The diplomatic push follows Hamas's positive response to US President Donald Trump's roadmap for an end to the fighting and the release of captives in Gaza in exchange for Palestinians held in Israeli jails.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the Israeli delegation would be departing for Egypt on Monday.Cairo confirmed it would be hosting a delegation from Hamas for discussions on "the ground conditions and details of the exchange of all Israeli detainees and Palestinian prisoners".The White House said Trump had also sent two envoys to Egypt -- his son-in-law Jared Kushner and Middle East negotiator Steve Witkoff."During communications with mediators, Hamas insisted that it is essential for Israel to halt military operations across all areas of the Gaza Strip, cease all air, reconnaissance, and drone activity, and withdraw from inside Gaza City," a Palestinian source close to Hamas said, adding the group would "also halt their military operations" in parallel.According to Trump's plan, in return for the hostages, Israel is expected to release 250 Palestinian prisoners with life sentences and more than 1,700 detainees from the Gaza Strip who were arrested during the war.Trump has warned he will "not tolerate delay" from Hamas, urging the group to move quickly towards a deal "or else all bets will be off".Israel, meanwhile, has continued to carry out strikes.AFPTV footage showed thick smoke billowing over the skyline of the coastal territory Sunday.Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli attacks killed at least 20 people across the territory, 13 of them in Gaza City.The US plan, endorsed by Netanyahu, calls for a halt to hostilities, the release of hostages within 72 hours, a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and Hamas's disarmament -- something the group has frequently described as a red line in the past.Under the proposal, administration of the territory would be taken up by a technocratic body overseen by a post-war transitional authority headed by Trump himself.Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 67,139 Palestinians, according to health ministry figures.
