Greek officials and residents of a region west of the capital Athens Wednesday began to assess the damage suffered by homes, businesses and farmland scorched by a wildfire. According to his office, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis chaired a cabinet meeting Wednesday to determine compensation for fire-striken victims and to ascertain environmental damage. Meanwhile, teams from the Environment and Civil Protection ministries arrived to assess communities about 50 km northwest of Athens, where residents have been returning after preventive evacuations, public broadcaster Ertnews reported. The blaze blackened more than 14,000 hectares in just five days but “the situation in the region is much better”, fire services spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyannis told AFP Wednesday. “Firefighters remain on maximum alert to deal with areas where there is still smoke.” According to an initial investigation by the fire service, the blaze started on Friday with a spark on power cables managed by a private company in Agios Vasileios, a seaside village at the foot of a mountain 85 km northwest of Athens. The smell of smoke was still present around the resort of Porto Germeno, a seaside resort where a large part of formerly forested land has been devoured by the flames and dozens of houses have burnt down, AFP reporters observed. Fanned by wind gusts of up to 130 km per hour, the fire quickly spread towards the southern slopes of Mount Kithairon and reached Megara, an industrial and agricultural town 40 km from Athens. Following devastating fires in Spain and France, Greek authorities have been fighting since the end of July against dozens of fires across the country that have killed five people, including three firefighters and the two members of the crew of a helicopter that was battling the flames.

The Al Jazeera Media Institute has announced the launch of a training course on “Investigative Reporting on Environmental Crimes”, an initiative designed to strengthen the capacity of journalists and media professionals to uncover environmental violations and transform complex ecological issues into impactful, evidence-based investigative stories. The training course comes amid growing global concern over environmental challenges, from illegal exploitation of natural resources and pollution to activities that threaten ecosystems and public health. As environmental crimes become increasingly sophisticated and cross-border in nature, the role of investigative journalism has become more essential than ever in revealing hidden practices, holding responsible actors accountable and informing communities about issues that directly affect their future. Through this programme, the Al Jazeera Media Institute aims to equip journalists with the tools needed to investigate environmental cases with accuracy, depth and professional methodology. The course explores the concept of environmental crimes, their different forms and their wider consequences on society, economies and natural resources. Participants will examine how environmental violations often extend beyond visible damage, affecting food security, public health, biodiversity and sustainable development. The course also highlights the importance of understanding legal and regulatory frameworks that govern environmental protection, enabling journalists to better analyse violations and identify accountability gaps. The course provides practical guidance on developing investigative reports from the initial stages of an idea to the final publication. Journalists will learn how to formulate investigative hypotheses, develop strong research questions and build a structured reporting strategy. They will also gain experience in collecting information from multiple sources, verifying evidence and using open-source intelligence tools to uncover critical details. A key component of the programme focuses on environmental data journalism, where participants learn how to analyse scientific information, interpret datasets and transform complex environmental findings into compelling narratives accessible to the public.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) has commissioned a new vessel dedicated to marine monitoring and scientific research, in a move aimed at strengthening Qatar's environmental surveillance, broadening field operations, and advancing marine protection and research programmes.  In a statement Saturday, the ministry said the launch forms part of wider efforts to improve environmental data quality and inform decision-making in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.  Director of the Marine Protection Department Mohammed al-Khanji said the vessel is fitted with advanced technical capabilities that allow it to carry out monitoring and research missions efficiently, reach remote and shallow waters, and respond swiftly to environmental emergencies at sea.  He said it will support a range of operations, including marine sample collection, preliminary analysis, and the tracking of environmental phenomena such as red tides and fish die-offs. The vessel will also bolster marine environment assessment programmes run by the Marine Protection Department in co-ordination with the Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department and other units, including Wildlife Development, Nature Reserves, and Environmental Monitoring.  Director of the Environmental Monitoring and Inspection Department Hassan al-Qasimi said the vessel pairs operational efficiency with lower running costs than larger boats. The 45-foot craft, which can carry up to 12 people, is powered by four engines that enable it to cover long distances at speed, improving marine coverage during both routine and emergency missions.  He added that the vessel is equipped with advanced navigation and communication systems, including GPS, radar, and the Starlink satellite network, ensuring continuous contact with field teams in remote waters and supporting more efficient monitoring and research work.  The vessel also houses an onboard environmental laboratory for preliminary analyses and field sample processing, along with a crane for handling research equipment. It is fitted with water-quality monitoring systems, marine sediment sampling tools, plankton nets, and dedicated storage for diving cylinders, supporting scientific and field missions with high standards of safety and efficiency.

His Excellency the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie met Thursday with Italy’s ambassador to Qatar Paolo Toschi. They discussed bilateral co-operation in environmental and climate fields and ways to enhance it, along with topics of mutual interest.  

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC) has spotted an environmental violation involving the illegal disposal of waste in a non-designated area of the desert, coinciding with the official conclusion of the winter camping season. The Land Protection Department confirmed that field monitoring and inspection teams shave successfully identified the violation and took all necessary legal measures, referring the case to the competent authorities. The ministry stressed that such behaviour constitutes a clear breach of environmental protection laws and undermines ongoing efforts to preserve the cleanliness of meadows and open desert areas.

The environmental situation in Qatar is stable and there are constant efforts to monitor the situation, especially since the start of the Iranian war crisis, noted His Excellency the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie. He stressed that as all environmental indicators are assuring that the situation is normal, there are no spotted phenomena that may cause any worries.Speaking to Qatar TV last night he sent a strong message of assurance to the public that the environmental situation, including the quality of air and water, is perfectly normal according to the latest information and data collected through the sophisticated local environment monitoring systems. He also stressed that the ministry deals with such information with full transparency and make the instant air quality reports available through an updated, interactive Air Quality Platform on its official website with clear and easily accessible coloured-indicators.He noted that operational environmental monitoring systems record all the related environmental indicators and send instant and immediate data and reports to the ministry operation rooms, where the information is analysed and documented to take the necessary decision in case of any occurrence in co-operation with the relevant entities.The ministry maintains several monitoring systems, in particular for air quality, radiation levels, and oil slicks or spills, and water quality. These work around the clock employing the most sophisticated and advanced equipment in the field and send data instantly. There are 48 air quality stations across various areas in the country and the local waters, and 20 air quality stations by the roadsides. These are constantly updates and enhanced and there are more expansion to come. Besides, the ministry has been investing in the human cadre and improve their skills in the radiation field through the scholarships programmes abroad in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and other relevant department to a have a qualified generation of Qatari professionals in the field.Regarding the risks of any radiation, HE Dr al-Subaie stressed that the ministry has an independent system to monitor the levels of radiation and it cover various areas of the country and the system gives very accurate data. Before, the crisis started, the ministry had conducted a comprehensive survey on the levels of radiations in the air and waters of the state and the levels were normal. Accordingly, all the information that comes now from these monitoring stations is compared to such information, which indicates that the situation is normal.Further, the ministry has early warning systems that can spot any potential sources of radiation or pollution that could cross the boundaries between countries, in addition to active cooperation with all the related entities in the GCC countries and the Atomic Energy Organisation and other regional originations. These all send early warnings and instant reports in case of any risk or abnormal radiation levels thanks to the effective information exchange co-operation.He explained that the ministry has active co-ordination and co-operation with the Civil Defence Council in case any of reports about nuclear reactors' mishap or malfunctioning in the region, where the necessary procedures are explored and taken immediately. Further, there is a simulation scenario for such mishaps or accidents, which anticipates their percussions within the next 48 hours, where the direction and speed of the wind is calculated and the effective measures are taken to deal with this in cooperation with the various concerned entities.Eventually, HE Dr al-Subaie urged the public to avoid listening to rumours and unverified information, as these are thriving these days. He added that the ministry is keen to update the public on any related issues with full transparency and its official platforms are always updated and easily accessible for all. 

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Wildlife Protection Department has launched a comprehensive field campaign to intensify on-the-ground monitoring, enhance environmental awareness among desert visitors, and to detect and address related environmental violations.**media[418223]**The campaign targeted the northern areas, including the wild meadows and desert areas. It focused on educating desert-goers about the importance of not making fires directly on the sand without using designated equipment. Participants were also reminded of the importance of disposing of waste only in designated areas and avoiding driving vehicles in restricted zones, as doing so degrades vegetation cover and damages surrounding environmental components.
