 Old Doha Port is set to celebrate one of Qatar’s most cherished traditions today (May 25) at 5:30pm, ahead of Eid al-Adha. Families and children will gather at the Mina District, in front of the Chabrat Al Mina Fish Market, to mark the annual Heyya Beyya tradition. Rooted in Qatari heritage and passed down through generations, Heyya Beyya is a cherished community tradition associated with Eid al-Adha. In the weeks leading up to the celebration, children plant and nurture greenery in small palm-leaf baskets known locally as “Al Hayya,” caring for them until the event. On the day itself, children gather to sing “Heyya Beyya,” a traditional folk song built around a call-and-response between children and the plant, before the baskets are cast into the sea in celebration. The Mina District’s waterfront will transform as participants arrive in traditional attire, joining in folk songs and celebrations that reflect the richness of Qatar’s cultural heritage. The event is organised in collaboration with the Qatar Scouts and Guides Association and reflects Old Doha Port’s commitment to preserving and celebrating Qatar’s cultural traditions, keeping heritage alive within the community for future generations.

Japanese manga titles are proving to be a major attraction at the Doha International Book Fair (DIBF), captivating young readers and parents with their diverse stories and artistry. The event will run until May 23 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC). Originating in Japan, manga refers to a wide range of comic books and graphic novels that span genres from adventure and fantasy to slice of life and romance. Known for their distinctive art styles and cinematic storytelling, manga have become a global phenomenon, appealing to readers of all ages and inspiring adaptations in film, television, and gaming. Alexis Galadriel, an incoming Grade 8 student at Philippine School Doha, described the fair’s extensive manga selection as “refreshing” compared to the limited collections in local bookstores. “It was deeply exciting to see such a wide range of comics available,” she said, and explained that reading manga with friends and family had created memorable bonding moments and even sparked critical discussions. Alexis explained that many of the comics she has read carry lessons through morals and symbolic undertones, often centred on friendship and family ties. She said these stories taught her that unity among people, especially friends, is essential in life. Beyond that, manga had also instilled in her a sense of gratitude for what she already has. As an aspiring artist, Alexis added that the detailed and cinematic panels make manga a valuable study in visual storytelling. Julie Ann, the mother of Alexis, said manga can enrich a child’s reading experience by offering diverse art styles and genres that cater to different interests. She added that while her children explore titles independently, they often discuss and recommend favourites together. “Manga promotes creativity, perseverance, and resilience, adding more meaning to a child’s reading journey,” she noted. For Budz Castillo, a Human Performance and Care Specialist at Qatar Shell, manga offers cultural insights but also raises concerns about age appropriate exposure. “I grew up reading DC and Marvel comics, so I don’t mind my son, JC, taking an interest in similar literature. But some modern manga can be quite graphic in visuals and language, so I prefer slow exposure until he is older,” he explained.Castillo acknowledged that the genre reflects Japanese traditions and worldviews, contributing to inclusivity and diversity at the fair. Both Julie and Alexis expressed hope that future editions of DIBF will continue to expand manga offerings, underscoring the genre’s growing role in Qatar’s literary landscape.

The Ministry of Culture staged the heritage operetta “Fath Al Khair” as part of the Doha International Book Fair 2026 programme, featuring nearly 100 performers and actors in a production organised by the Theater Affairs Centre and the Music Affairs Centre. The work documents the pearl-diving era in the lives of Qataris who ventured to sea to harvest its precious pearls, which were sold in global markets. The sea’s bounty formed the backbone of the Qatari economy and the entire region during that period. The operetta included a collection of traditional Qatari songs presented in interactive folk art rituals, accompanied by graphics, sets, costumes, and performances that reflected the era. It also depicted the challenges faced during the diving expeditions, as well as the social and artistic atmosphere of that historical period. The work comprised several diverse artistic tableaux, beginning with “Fath Al Khair Tableau,” followed by “The Sword Tableau,” and then “The Diving Tableau.” The operetta also featured “The Waiting Tableau,” “The Preparation for Marriage Tableau,” and “The Arabic Voice Tableau.” The performance included “The Wedding Tableau.” The operetta, which featured a women’s section, a men’s section, and a final section, relied on visual displays, sets, and costumes inspired by the ancient maritime environment, plus interactive performances and folk arts. Artist Hadiya Saeed expressed her immense happiness with the positive feedback the operetta received, emphasising that audience interaction and praise served as a significant motivator for the team after the considerable effort invested in presenting this heritage-themed performance. Artist Khalid al-Hammadi, the operetta’s narrator, also expressed his pride in participating in this heritage-themed production, affirming that presenting a performance of this scale before a number of dignitaries and public figures in the country was a source of great pride for him and all those involved in the operetta. Mohammed al-Mulla, the operetta’s director, expressed his delight at the audience’s praise and their engagement with the performances, emphasising that the positive reactions reflected the successful delivery of the heritage and national message the team sought to convey. The dhow “Fath Al Khair” is a ship, a famous Qatari heritage site historically linked to the late Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah al-Thani, and representing a living symbol of authentic Qatari maritime heritage. 

As the 35th edition of the Doha International Book Fair 2026 gets underway, Qatar National Library (QNL) is welcoming visitors to its interactive booth with an immersive experience — combining technology, storytelling, history, and cultural exploration for all age groups. Among the highlights is “Literary Twin,” an AI-powered experience that matches visitors with authors based on their reading habits, storytelling preferences, and narrative styles. Participants are introduced to their literary counterpart through a short video and are encouraged to explore the Library’s “Book Match” service. Visitors can also engage in a game-inspired “Free Knowledge Shopping Spree,” where they build a virtual basket of Library services via an interactive display that introduces users to the institution’s resources and encourages free membership registration. For children, the “Dream Big, The Hero is You” activity allows young visitors to personalise stories with their names and photos, placing them at the centre of their own adventures while supporting the Library’s “Ready for School” initiative. Another interactive feature, “Score to Play – Qatar’s Story,” invites visitors to test their knowledge of Qatar’s history through a QR code-based challenge hosted on the Library’s mobile app, with participants eligible for prize draws. The booth also highlights the QNL’s heritage collections through “Ibn Battuta: A Cross-Cultural Arab Journey,” an immersive touchscreen experience showcasing rare manuscripts, books, maps, and archival materials related to the travels of the renowned Arab explorer. Visitors can further explore the Library through a 360-degree virtual tour that offers an interactive look at its facilities and collections. One of the standout attractions is the interactive Aerial Photography Collection, which allows visitors to trace Doha’s urban transformation from 1950 to 1975 using historical aerial imagery. The archive contains more than 9,000 photographs from flights conducted between 1944 and 1983. Families can also enjoy daily appearances by the Library’s mascot, Ramly, alongside the “Did You Know” history wall, which features facts about the country’s past. Visitors are encouraged to explore the booth, register for free membership, and access the QNL’s digital services through its app. 

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, Tuesday visited the Doha International Book Fair in its 35th edition, held at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center (DECC).Her Highness toured the fair's pavilions and reviewed the contributions of the participating government agencies, cultural institutions, and Arab and international publishing houses.Her Highness also attended the Qatar Foundation Schools Showcase at Qatar Science and Technology Park, where students presented innovative projects and ideas spanning Artificial Intelligence, sustainability, science, technology, the arts, and interdisciplinary research.Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad al-Thani, Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, also attended the showcase — organised by Qatar Foundation's (QF) Pre-University Education — which reflects QF's commitment to fostering innovation-driven learning and connecting students with real-world environments where they can present their ideas and engage with industry experts, researchers, and QF alumni.The showcase served as an interactive platform bringing students from QF schools together with partners from the academic and industry sectors, while providing them with the opportunity to present their projects to the wider community, reflecting the role of education in preparing a generation capable of transforming ideas into solutions and future-focused innovations.President of QF's Pre-University Education, Abeer al-Khalifa, said: "Showcases such as this demonstrate that talent development does not begin at university or in the workplace, it starts much earlier, in our schools. When young people are given opportunities to apply their learning, engage with authentic challenges, and communicate their ideas with confidence, they begin to see themselves as contributors to Qatar's future from an early age".She explained that creating platforms of this kind helps to position K-12 education as a key part of Qatar's long-term talent development journey, saying: "By connecting students with researchers, industry partners, and innovators across our multiversity ecosystem and beyond, we are intentionally strengthening the link between education and the future economy, while reinforcing the importance of innovation, leadership, and problem-solving from the earliest stages of learning".Al-Khalifa explained that QF's ecosystem — spanning policy and research centers, partner universities, and QF alumni — enables students to engage directly with experts from diverse fields, creating learning experiences that extend beyond the traditional classroom."These interactions help students strengthen their communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities, while gaining a deeper understanding of how their work can translate into meaningful impact", she said.Al-Khalifa emphasised that providing public platforms for students to showcase their work is central to PUE's vision of preparing future-ready learners, saying: "Ideas flourish when they are shared, and students who dedicate genuine effort to their work deserve opportunities to present it to the wider community and be recognised for what they have achieved".Mehdi Benchaabane, Vice President of QF Schools within QF's Pre-University Education, said: "We intentionally chose to host the showcase at Qatar Science & Technology Park because we want our students to experience a real innovation ecosystem and feel that they are already part of it".The showcase featured around 50 student projects addressing real-world challenges across artificial intelligence, sustainability, health, and culture, alongside participation from industry partners within the public and private sector, as well as QF's Qatar Science & Technology Park and Hamad Bin Khalifa University, the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council, Qatar National Library, and QF alumni, giving students the opportunity to see the direct connection between their projects and Qatar's future priorities.Benchaabane explained that the IB Middle Years Program Personal Project forms the academic foundation of the showcase, encouraging students to identify real-world challenges, conduct research, and develop meaningful projects, while the showcase itself provides a platform where these ideas move beyond the classroom into real-world application."When a student stands before industry experts and QF alumni to present and defend their project, they are no longer simply learners in a classroom, they become innovators capable of communicating their ideas with confidence", he said.Benchaabane emphasised that presenting projects, responding to questions, and engaging directly with audiences play a significant role in building students' confidence and personal growth. He said that encouraging students to present in both Arabic and English through dual-language programs strengthens their academic and professional communication skills in both languages.He also noted that the transformation students experience after participating in the showcase is "significant and impactful", explaining that many initially view their projects as academic requirements, but leave seeing them as ideas with real potential for future development and application."When a student hears from an expert or a QF alumnus that their project has real potential, it changes the way they see both themselves and their future", he added."Giving students the opportunity to curate their booths and present their projects to the public fosters a stronger sense of ownership and responsibility toward their ideas, while building confidence that continues to shape them long after the showcase ends".
