LIV defectors face awkward return to tours they abandoned

* LIV collapse may leave some players with rocky road back to established tours* Big names may have more clout when negotiating return, says expert* Some players who turned down LIV excited for return of defectors   Having defected to LIV Golf for eye-watering sums of money, players from the doomed circuit may be about to discover their true market value as they seek a return to the established tours they spurned.LIV's collapse has left dozens of golfers facing uncertain futures, though the biggest names will likely find a warmer welcome than the journeymen and fading stars who also cashed in on the Saudi-backed league's riches.Former major champions Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed have already turned their backs on LIV, while Australian Lucas Herbert and England's Tyrrell Hatton have also signalled their departures.Others, including Australia's former British Open champion Cameron Smith, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau, have yet to publicly settle their futures.Some are owed millions of dollars under their playing contracts and may have little prospect of recovering much, if any.LIV's bankruptcy filing listed 14 current and former players among its 30 largest unsecured creditors, with claims totalling about $45.5 million.The list included outstanding obligations of about $5.7 million to DeChambeau and $4.8 million to Smith, a fraction of their earnings from the league and their sign-on bonuses.Some will hope to resume earning on US PGA Tour and European DP World Tour as soon as they can but returning to the circuits they turned their backs on will not be a formality.Neither tour is obliged to restore their former privileges.The PGA Tour's existing rules provide for suspensions linked to players' last LIV appearances. SCAR TISSUE Five-times major winner Koepka was granted re-entry to the US Tour through its "returning member program" as a major winner but that door is now closed to others.Tour boss Brian Rolapp made it clear in June that the LIV defections had been taken personally."There’s scar tissue, and that has to be accounted for," he said.The DP World Tour has been more accommodating, indicating it is prepared to consider membership applications and tournament invitations from returning LIV players, although outstanding fines and disciplinary matters could complicate their reinstatement.Europe may ultimately prove an attractive interim destination for golfers shut out, at least temporarily, from the PGA Tour.The PGA Tour and DP World Tour did not provide immediate comment when contacted by Reuters on Friday.The big-name players are likely to have more clout than some of LIV's lesser lights when negotiating their returns, opening the prospect of a two-tier market."The likes of Jon Rahm have value. Some, like Cam Smith, may have less after seeing their form drop while on the LIV tour," said Colin Smith, principal of Melbourne-based sports media advisory firm Global Media & Sports.LIV golfers whose best years are behind them may have to earn their way back via qualifying tournaments or return to developmental circuits.Some players who remained loyal to the US and DP World Tours are positive about the return of LIV rivals, saying it will be good for golf after years of controversy and disruption.Others are more measured and argue against rolling out the red carpet for the defectors.Australian former world number one Adam Scott said LIV players should have to earn their way back on merit."They left and gave up those privileges," Scott said at the DP World Tour's season-ending Abu Dhabi Championship."I think they should re-qualify themselves, ideally ... I think that seems logical and sensible."

QNB Group advances regional capital markets connectivity at The Network Forum Middle East 2026

QNB Group has reinforced its role in supporting regional capital market development at The Network Forum Middle East 2026 in Oman, highlighting the importance of institutional banking expertise, custody capabilities and cross-border connectivity in facilitating investment across the region.The forum brought together financial institutions, exchanges, central asset managers, and other market participants to explore the developments shaping the region’s capital markets and post-trade landscape, with discussions focused on improving market access, attracting international investment and advancing digital innovation.Discussions highlighted the importance of ensuring that market reforms deliver practical benefits for investors. While regional markets have made progress in improving access and modernising their systems, challenges remain in simplifying investment processes and enabling faster, more efficient transactions across borders. These developments reinforce the need for greater collaboration between financial institutions and market participants to support regional market growth.These priorities align with QNB Group's approach to institutional banking, which combines local market knowledge with international capabilities to support clients operating across multiple jurisdictions. Through its custody and securities services, the Group supports global custodians, financial institutions, asset managers and government entities, helping facilitate access to regional investment opportunities.Oman represents an important part of this regional connectivity. With an established presence in the Sultanate since 2007, QNB Oman provides corporate banking, trade finance, cash management and treasury solutions that support local businesses and institutional clients.The forum's focus on market modernisation was particularly relevant to Oman, following its transition to a T+2 settlement cycle in September 2026. Through its local presence and access to the Group's wider international network, QNB Oman supports trade, investment and financial activity between the Sultanate and regional and international markets.QNB Group's strategic agreement with State Street, announced earlier this year, further demonstrates its commitment to advancing custody services and strengthening international investor connectivity.The collaboration aims to develop a new custody servicing model in Qatar, combining QNB's local market expertise with State Street’s global capabilities. This approach reflects a broader industry priority discussed at the forum: bringing together local market access and international service expertise to support more efficient investment flows and strengthen market accessibility.Abdulla Hashim al-Sada, senior executive vice president for Group Asset and Wealth Management at QNB Group, said: "As capital markets across the region continue to evolve, their ability to attract international investment will increasingly depend on the strength of the infrastructure and services that connect investors to opportunities. Strong custody infrastructure, efficient post-trade services and seamless cross-border connectivity are essential to building confidence in regional markets and supporting their international competitiveness."At QNB Group, we combine deep regional market knowledge with institutional banking expertise, an extensive international network and strategic partnerships to support the evolving needs of institutional investors. Through these capabilities, we aim to strengthen cross-border investment, support development of capital markets and create long-term value for our clients."

Qatar cybersecurity market set to reach $204mn by 2031

Qatar’s cybersecurity market is projected to grow from $151.75mn in 2026 to $203.99mn by 2031, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.12%, as accelerating digitalisation, regulatory requirements and the protection of critical infrastructure drive demand for advanced security solutions, according to a new industry report.  The report, published by international market research firm Mordor Intelligence, highlights how Qatar’s cybersecurity landscape is increasingly being shaped by government policies that place cyber resilience at the centre of national governance, linking technology investments to regulatory compliance, risk management and the protection of essential services.  Government entities, sovereign enterprises and highly regulated industries are expected to remain key drivers of market growth, supported by cloud-led public sector programmes, smart infrastructure development and the modernisation of the financial services industry.  The report noted that the expansion of connected systems across the economy is creating a growing need for cybersecurity solutions, particularly as organisations increasingly rely on digital platforms and interconnected infrastructure.  “The market remains exposed to industrial security pressure because energy assets and connected operational environments require specialised controls and managed oversight,” the report said.  By solution type, cybersecurity solutions accounted for 61.79% of the Qatar market in 2025. Services, however, are expected to record faster growth, expanding at a CAGR of 7.92% through 2031, reflecting rising demand for specialised expertise, managed security and technical support.  In terms of deployment, on-premise solutions dominated the market with a 61.21% share in 2025. Cloud-based cybersecurity is projected to grow at a CAGR of 6.52% through 2031, reflecting the increasing adoption of cloud technologies across public and private sector organisations.  The banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector was the largest end-user industry, accounting for 27.28% of the market in 2025.  Healthcare is forecast to be the fastest-growing sector, with a projected CAGR of 7.82% through 2031, as hospitals and healthcare providers expand their reliance on digital systems.  Large enterprises represented 67.83% of market demand in 2025, reflecting their extensive digital infrastructure and complex security requirements. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), meanwhile, are projected to register a CAGR of 6.47% through 2031 as cybersecurity adoption broadens across the business landscape.  The report identifies Qatar’s National Cybersecurity Strategy 2024-2030 as a major factor shaping the market, with its five pillars focusing on critical infrastructure resilience, legislation and law enforcement, the data-driven economy, workforce development and international co-operation.  The strategy reinforces the role of cybersecurity as a national priority rather than simply an information technology investment. Protection of industrial systems, particularly in the energy sector, is another important growth area. As industrial facilities become increasingly connected, operators require specialised security measures, including network segmentation, asset visibility and incident response systems designed for operational technology environments.  The report also points to the continuing cybersecurity requirements of smart-city infrastructure developed in connection with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.  Connected transport systems, public facilities, networks and municipal services have become part of everyday urban operations, creating sustained demand for continuous monitoring and protection.  The shift from event-based security preparedness to long-term operational resilience is increasing the importance of large-scale cybersecurity frameworks, including zero-trust architectures and AI-enabled endpoint protection.

India's Reliance Industries reports best ever quarterly sales in Q3

Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries on Friday reported its highest ever quarterly revenue, saying net profit rose 41% in the third quarter, helped by strong performances from its core oil-to-chemicals arm and digital services division.Reliance's July-September numbers come days after the impressive debut of Jio Platforms, the conglomerate's digital services arm, which raised more than $3bn in the country's biggest initial public offering earlier this week.The retail-to-refining giant led by billionaire tycoon Mukesh Ambani is India's most valuable company by market capitalisation.The conglomerate reported revenue of 3.62tn rupees ($38bn), up 27.8% year-on-year and its highest ever quarterly sales figure, according to a company statement.Reliance has aggressively expanded into telecom and green energy businesses over the last decade, but it still relies on its traditional oil business for profits.The conglomerate owns and operates the world's largest refinery complex in the eastern Indian state of Gujarat.The sector has faced multiple challenges, with the ongoing Mideast conflict affecting supplies, but Reliance has managed to diversify crude imports.Reliance "delivered a strong performance despite a complex operating environment", Ambani said in the statement."Our ability to optimise feedstock sourcing and product placement along with operations across the value chain enabled us to improve margin capture," Ambani added.Jio's strong listing has also pushed the growth.Launched a decade ago, Jio's wireless service disrupted the market with steep discounts that helped it rapidly win customers from rival telecom firms Bharti Airtel and Vodafone.With more than 530mn subscribers, the firm currently makes most of its money from telecoms, but has expanded in recent years into newer areas including digital services and artificial intelligence.Analysts see Jio as the key to Reliance's strategy to evolve beyond its traditional business and a touchstone of its future tech ambitions.Ambani said Reliance has set "multiple global benchmarks.""It demonstrates the depth of confidence investors place in Jio's solid foundation and strong growth visibility," he added.

Nvidia's web of AI bets: Smart strategy or bubble risk?

Nvidia's $3bn investment in Meta's share sale, announced on Tuesday, is the latest addition to a portfolio of stakes, loans and guarantees that has made the chip giant what some analysts describe as the central bank of the artificial intelligence boom.The galaxy of deals has helped keep demand running high for Nvidia's processors, which power vast data centers around the world and are the central ingredient of the AI revolution.That demand has made Nvidia the world's most valuable company by market capitalisation and turned chief executive Jensen Huang into AI's kingmaker.But the investments have raised a nagging question among some doubters on Wall Street: is Nvidia helping to inflate an AI bubble?What is Nvidia investing in?: Nvidia has taken stakes in leading AI developers including OpenAI, Anthropic and Elon Musk's xAI, now part of SpaceX.It has also invested in "neocloud" companies such as CoreWeave and Nebius, which rent out computing power built on Nvidia chips.Its bets extend well beyond the United States. In Europe, Nvidia has backed French AI developer Mistral and British self-driving startup Wayve. In Asia, it has teamed up with South Korea's SK Group to build data centers.Beyond equity, the company has offered financial backstops, acting as a customer of last resort.In CoreWeave's case, Nvidia committed to buy up to $6.3bn of unused computing capacity if no other customer takes it.Nvidia also has around $36bn in cloud backstops and a guarantee of up to $105bn linked to an OpenAI data centre, according to US media. Why is Nvidia doing this?: Experts say Nvidia's enormous profits give it few better options."They're essentially becoming a bank," said Michael Cusumano, a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management."Channeling it back to infrastructure investment tied to purchases of Nvidia equipment is a smart thing."He said the alternatives were less attractive.Running its own data centers would put Nvidia in competition with its biggest customers "and that might also trigger a whole bunch of antitrust complaints," Cusumano added.Gil Luria, head of technology research at DA Davidson, said Nvidia identifies parts of the AI ecosystem that are not investing enough and puts money into them to fill the gaps."It's unprecedented, but it appears to be working," he said.Huang has defended the approach, arguing that frontier AI labs are the first generation of startups that need tens of billions of dollars to get started, not just millions.Nvidia's investments effectively give those companies more time to succeed. Is it 'circular' financing?: Critics have compared the deals to the dot-com era, when companies inflated their growth by investing in startups that then bought their products."There is nothing intrinsically wrong with Nvidia helping its clients," said Paulo Carvão, a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School."But the closer these relationships are, the harder it is for one to assess true sustainable demand."Luria said not all demand was equal."If Nvidia gives CoreWeave money to turn around and buy Nvidia chips, that's not as good as Microsoft buying Nvidia chips because they have a customer in OpenAI that has a customer in an enterprise technology that's willing to pay for it," he said. What are the risks?: The main concern is concentration. Two direct customers accounted for 22% and 14% of Nvidia's revenue in its 2026 fiscal year, according to the company's annual report.Carvão said the web of overlapping investments increases the risk of contagion if a weaker company such as CoreWeave runs into trouble."If AI demand disappoints, spending cuts could hit chipmakers, data-center builders and their financiers at once," he said.Those concerns have grown this month. Shares of several Nvidia-linked neocloud companies, including CoreWeave, Nebius and IREN, fell at least 30% in October amid worries about tighter credit for AI projects.Carvão noted that the market for AI chips remains limited by supply. He estimated demand would keep growing for another 12 to 18 months before it begins to level off.Cusumano said he expected high demand for Nvidia chips to continue for three to five years.

Jio reaches $137bn valuation, becoming India’s second-most valuable firm

Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's telecom-to-digital firm Reliance Jio Platforms soared 27% in its Mumbai debut on Wednesday, making it India's second-largest company by market capitalisation after a record-breaking $3.2bn IPO.Jio's valuation of around $137bn also helped to lift the broader Reliance conglomerate's combined market capitalisation to $320bn to make it India's top firm by that metric, surpassing the salt-to-aviation Tata Group, which oversees several listed entities in the country.The Jio listing, the first for the Reliance conglomerate in two decades, advances Ambani's plan to turn Reliance from an oil-and-chemicals conglomerate into an "everything company" spanning consumer products and technology.The listing ceremony on Wednesday in Mumbai was attended by members of the Ambani family, including Mukesh's eldest son, Akash, who is Jio's managing director. Before walking to the stage to speak, he touched his parents’ feet, a traditional gesture of respect.While all three children of the senior Ambani gave speeches, Mukesh sat in the audience, visibly emotional and in tears.Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest person according to Forbes magazine, has spent years shaping a succession plan that was intended to avoid a repeat of the public feud with his younger brother, Anil, that followed their father Dhirubhai’s death in 2002.Jio, whose telecoms business serves more than 530mn customers, is backed by Meta Platforms and Alphabet's Google. Its user numbers are second only to China Mobile's on the basis of single-country subscribers.Jio's stock ended the trading day at 1,417.5 rupees, near the day's high, compared with its 1,119-rupee offer price. It rose as much as 27.3% during trade, and its market capitalisation overtook those of telecom firm Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank, making it the second-largest Indian firm by that metric, lagging only behind its parent."The IPO price offered a valuation entry point; the listing price reflects a much greater degree of optimism," said Aishvarya Dadheech, founder of Fident Asset Management.Several brokerages see a potential upside for the Jio stock, but they flagged competition, heavy capital spending and changes in India's telecom rules, including those related to spectrum, licensing and fees."Jio has had a strong debut even despite geopolitical issues and turbulent market conditions... the revenues and earnings will lead the stock here onwards," said Kranthi Bathini, equity strategist at WealthMills Securities.Jio plans to use up to $2.89bn of the net IPO proceeds to repay the borrowings of its telecoms unit.The Ambani family rang the IPO bell on stage at the National Stock Exchange in Mumbai. Mukesh Ambani watched as Anant traced Reliance’s and Jio’s legacies and journey in a speech at the ceremony.Major Indian newspapers on Wednesday carried front-page ads from Reliance Jio, saying, "Thank you, India."India has become the world's busiest IPO market this year in terms of the number of deals, with 246 listings so far.Despite its size, Jio Platforms' IPO was not a record payday for its bankers. Its 19 bankers will split about $20.7mn, or 0.65% of the offer, roughly half the 1.3% that sources said Hyundai Motor India paid to its bankers in 2024.The Jio listing is the Ambanis’ latest turn at the stock market. Dhirubhai Ambani, Mukesh’s father and Reliance’s founder, took the company public in 1977 with an offering aimed at small retail investors, which was widely credited with helping build India’s equity culture.Jio comes from a stable that Indian investors have long backed: parent Reliance Industries has returned about 900% since 2006, ahead of the Nifty’s 685%, LSEG data shows, and is often seen as a buy-and-hold staple in retail portfolios.After the ceremony, people waved flags bearing the Jio logo next to the National Stock Exchange’s bull statue, where the Ambani family posed for pictures.
