His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani held a telephone conversation Wednesday with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. At the outset of the call, His Highness the Amir extended his condolences and sympathy to the prime minister for the victims of the explosion that occurred at one of the industrial facilities in Ras Laffan Industrial City, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of several Pakistani nationals. He wished those injured a speedy recovery. The Pakistani PM expressed his profound gratitude to HH the Amir for his heartfelt sentiments and commended the healthcare provided by Qatar to the injured, as well as the efforts made by the competent authorities in handling the incident. Both sides underscored their support for the families of the victims, along with the two countries’ commitment to strengthening the bonds of cooperation in the interests of both brotherly peoples. In addition, the conversation focused on bilateral relations between the two nations, as well as evolving regional developments, particularly updates regarding the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran. In this context, Sharif lauded Qatar’s endeavours oin promoting regional security, peace, and stability, expressing his appreciation for Qatar’s efforts to support security and stability in the region. In a post on X, Sharif said the two leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive progress achieved during the first round of technical talks in Burgenstock, and agreed on the importance of maintaining the momentum through continued dialogue and diplomacy. The prime minister also said Pakistan took pride in its close fraternal relations with Qatar, adding that he looked forward to welcoming the Amir to Pakistan later this year.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani received a phone call Tuesday from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan.  At the beginning of the call, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan expressed his condolences to HH the Amir following the accident at an industrial facility in Ras Laffan, while offering his deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery, and affirming the UAE's support for and solidarity with Qatar during this difficult time.  HH the Amir expressed his thanks and appreciation to the UAE president for his sincere sentiments and his expression of brotherly solidarity, commending the UAE's stance and its support for Qatar. They also discussed the close fraternal relations between their two countries.

Qatar is mourning the tragic loss of 13 lives following the June 21 explosion and fire at the Barzan local gas supply facility in Ras Laffan Industrial City.  The deceased were of Indian and Pakistani nationalities, while 66 others of Qatari, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Kenyan, Ghanaian, Tanzanian, Nigerian, and Nepalese nationalities sustained injuries. None of the injured are in life threatening condition, according to Minister of State for Energy Affairs His Excellency Saad bin Sherida al Kaabi.  Speaking to the media Monday, al Kaabi, who is also president and CEO of QatarEnergy, extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives.  Al-Kaabi said QatarEnergy extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives, and prays for the swift recovery of those injured. QatarEnergy pledges its full support to those affected by this tragedy, he also said.  The minister stressed that the incident was an operational accident and not sabotage or hostile in nature. He explained that the Barzan plant had been shut since December 2025 for urgent maintenance and was restarted only two days before the accident.  “The fire was quickly and fully extinguished by QatarEnergy Emergency Response Team and Qatar Civil Defence,” he noted.  Despite the tragedy, al Kaabi emphasised that QatarEnergy’s LNG facilities, Ras Laffan Port, and logistical operations remain unaffected.  “We have ample supplies of gas to make up for the loss from different projects and different capabilities that we have. So we don’t see any shortage. It will not affect anything regarding exports. It will not affect anything regarding our local requirements,” he said.  Clarifying damage assessment and repair timelines, al Kaabi differentiated the Barzan incident from the earlier attack on QatarEnergy’s LNG trains at Ras Laffan, which involved proprietary cryogenic units requiring “three to five years” to replace.  “It’s a different gas plant and a different area of the plant that was damaged,” he explained, underscoring QatarEnergy’s commitment to transparency in announcing definitive timelines once investigations are complete.  He also dismissed concerns about environmental impact, confirming that “there is no loss of containment and there’s no environmental impact.”  In its official statement, QatarEnergy said work is underway to assess the damage to Barzan and neighbouring facilities. It reiterated that LNG facilities, Ras Laffan Port, other logistics operations, and export capabilities remain unaffected as a result of the explosion and fire.

The Ministry of Interior (MOI) announced Monday that the number of people injured in the incident at a factory in the Ras Laffan Industrial Area has reached 54.In a statement posted on its official account on X, the Ministry said that the Qatari International Search and Rescue Group, affiliated with the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya), is working in coordination with Civil Defense teams to carry out intensive search operations for 18 missing persons.Earlier, the Ministry of Interior stated that preliminary findings indicate the incident was caused by a technical malfunction during operations at the facility. It also reassured the public that there had been no hazardous leak or release of substances posing a threat to public safety. 

QatarEnergy has confirmed an operational incident during the start-up of operations at Ras Laffan Industrial City, which led to an explosion and fire at the Barzan local gas supply facility on the evening of June 21, 2026. Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the site and successfully contained the fire, which is now under control. QatarEnergy said it will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

Qatar's ‌interior ministry ​said an explosion ‌resulting from ‌a "technical ⁠accident" ‌occurred on Sunday ‌at a factory ⁠in Ras Laffan, an industrial city north of the capital Doha and site of the ​country's core LNG processing operations.It said several injuries ‌were reported but ⁠no ​leak that "threatens safety".The ​ministry did not give the exact location of the explosion, but a source with knowledge of the matter said ‌it occurred at ‌the ⁠Barzan gas plant ⁠in ⁠Ras Laffan and was due to an "operational error".A Reuters witness had said ​a loud boom was heard in Doha.

Five vessels loaded with liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Ras Laffan, Qatar, are approaching the Strait of Hormuz, ‌ship-tracking data showed Saturday.If the ​vessels successfully crossed ‌the strait, it would be the first ‌transit of ⁠LNG ‌cargoes through the waterway ‌since the US-Israel war with Iran began on ⁠February 28.On Friday, Iran reopened the strait, which before the war carried a fifth of the world's LNG trade, following a separate US-brokered ceasefire agreement on Thursday by Israel and Lebanon. A convoy of oil tankers was ​crossing the Strait of Hormuz Saturday.Data from analytics firm Kpler showed the vessels, Al Ghashamiya, Lebrethah, Fuwairit, ‌Rasheeda and Disha, have ⁠moved eastward towards ​the Strait of Hormuz. The first ​four tankers are controlled by QatarEnergy, while Disha is chartered by India's Petronet."Currently, we see five laden vessels approaching the Strait of Hormuz. All five vessels loaded from Qatar's Ras Laffan plant. Of the five, two are destined for Pakistan, ‌two likely destined for India ‌and one with ⁠no clear destination," said Laura Page, manager of ⁠LNG Insight ⁠at Kpler."In addition, two ballast Adnoc vessels enter the Gulf of Oman and moor outside Fujairah. The vessel movements align with flaring data which suggests multiple trains at Ras Laffan’s north site have ​restarted as well as UAE’s Das Island plant," she added.Qatar is the world's second-largest exporter of LNG, with shipments mostly going to buyers in Asia. Iranian attacks, however, knocked out 17% of Qatar's LNG export capacity, with repairs expected to sideline 12.8 million metric tons per year of ‌the fuel ​for three to five years. 

Targeting Qatar’s energy infrastructure, particularly Ras Laffan Industrial City, signals a dangerous escalation against critical facilities, with consequences that extend far beyond national borders and threaten the stability of global energy markets, legal experts have warned. They stressed that Ras Laffan is not just an industrial zone but one of the world’s most vital hubs for liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and exports. Any attack on the site would reverberate immediately across international markets and supply chains. Experts note that such actions reflect a broader shift in modern conflict, where strategic economic assets are increasingly becoming primary targets. This trend raises serious concerns about global economic security. Repeated attacks, they caution, risk triggering uncontrolled escalation and weakening international efforts to protect civilian infrastructure, particularly facilities tied to essential public needs. Under international law, civilian objects enjoy special protection, and targeting them under any circumstances constitutes a violation requiring a firm international response. Lawyer Abdullah Al Nuaimi Al-Hajri described the targeting of Qatar’s energy sources and critical facilities as a grave breach of international law, warning that those responsible could face serious legal consequences. He noted that the UN Charter prohibits the use or threat of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, adding that such acts amount to aggression against sovereignty and international peace. Even in times of armed conflict, he said, international humanitarian law imposes strict limits on targeting civilian objects, especially infrastructure essential to daily life, such as energy and gas facilities. Given Ras Laffan’s global significance, any attack would threaten not only Qatar but also the broader world economy and international energy security. Lawyer Ali Al-Khalifi said targeting Qatar’s energy facilities marks a dangerous turn in the conflict, placing vital infrastructure directly in harm’s way and endangering the arteries of the global economy. He pointed out that potential disruptions affecting around 17% of LNG export capacity, amounting to tens of billions of dollars in annual losses, highlight the scale of the risk and its impact on global economic stability. A recovery period that could stretch over several years, he added, underscores the urgent need for decisive international action to ensure accountability and prevent recurrence. Lawyer Zainab Mohamed said the attacks reflect a troubling shift in the threats facing critical infrastructure and signal a change in how strategically important civilian facilities are treated. Energy installations, she emphasised, are lifelines for both national and global economies and are afforded special protection under international law. Targeting them not only constitutes a direct violation but also sets a dangerous precedent for similar actions elsewhere, exposing the global economy to unprecedented risks. Lawyer Saad Al-Dossari described such attacks as a serious departure from established legal norms, underscoring how conflicts are increasingly moving beyond traditional battlefields to target the foundations of the global economy. Energy facilities, he said, are no longer merely economic assets but pillars of international stability due to their direct role in securing global supply. Ras Laffan’s position as one of the world’s leading LNG production and export centres gives it immense strategic importance, making any threat to it an immediate concern for international markets and one that demands a firm global response. 

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani received a telephone call from the President of the friendly French Republic Emmanuel Macron.The call dealt with developments in the region, following the attack on Ras Laffan Industrial City, and the dangerous escalation it represents, which could threaten the security and stability of the region and undermine global energy supplies.In this regard, the French President stressed the importance of the immediate cessation of military escalation targeting civilian infrastructure, particularly energy and water facilities, emphasizing the need to protect civilians and their basic needs, and to safeguard energy supplies from the repercussions of this military aggression.HH the Amir said that the continued targeting of vital facilities posed a direct threat to regional and international stability. HH the Amir renewed the call to immediately end escalation, intensify international efforts to contain tensions, and work through diplomatic channels to ensure the crisis does not expand. 

Qatar has expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the blatant Iranian attack targeting Ras Laffan Industrial City, which caused fires resulting in significant damage to the facility.It described the attack as a dangerous escalation, a flagrant violation of state sovereignty, and a direct threat to its national security and regional stability.In a statement Wednesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that despite Qatar's policy of distancing itself from this war since its outset and its commitment to avoiding any escalation, the Iranian side continues to target it and neighbouring countries in an irresponsible approach that undermines regional security and threatens international peace.The ministry stressed that Qatar has repeatedly called for the need to refrain from targeting civilian and energy facilities, including within the territory of Iran, in order to preserve the resources of the region's peoples and safeguard international peace and security. However, the Iranian side continues its escalatory policies that are pushing the region toward the brink and drawing countries not party to this crisis into the conflict zone.The ministry said the attack constitutes a violation of UN Security Council Resolution No. (2817), renewing its call on the Council to assume its responsibilities in maintaining international peace and security and to take the necessary measures to stop these serious violations and deter their perpetrators.The ministry also reiterated that Qatar reserves its right to respond in accordance with Article (51) of the United Nations Charter and the right to self-defence as guaranteed by international law, stressing that it will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents.
