Police receive early-morning tip-offFive men arrested for suspected explosives offencesUS base has been used to strike IranTrump says the arrests were fantasticBritish police arrested five men on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences on Sunday near an air ‌base that has been used by the US to strike Iran, after a tip-off that three vans had ​been seen heading to the military airfield. US ‌President Donald Trump said the suspects had been looking to do "big damage" and had been under investigation ‌by British and US authorities. British ⁠counterterrorism detectives leading the investigation said ‌police had received a call about three suspicious vehicles that ‌appeared to be travelling towards RAF Fairford in the west of England in the early hours of Sunday. Five men were ⁠arrested by armed officers and later held on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act. Police, who said they believed the incident was now contained, have not yet publicly stated who they assessed was involved. An Iranian-linked motive is considered the most likely, a source familiar with the investigation said, while a Russian sabotage operation or an Islamist plot were also being looked at. POLICE WORKING TO UNDERSTAND CIRCUMSTANCES"We are in the early stages of an investigation, and five men remain in custody," Counter Terrorism Policing Senior National Coordinator Vicki Evans said in a statement. "As you would expect we are working closely with our partners ​to understand the circumstances of the incident." Police said a 400-metre cordon was in place around the base as the bomb disposal unit investigated the vans. Local residents in 85 homes in a nearby village were evacuated and armed officers were patrolling the site. The British government, which has ‌given authorisation to the US to use bombers ⁠based at Fairford to ​strike Iranian missile sites that were attacking ships in the Strait of Hormuz, said Prime Minister Andy Burnham ​was being updated on the incident. Burnham thanked the police and armed forces, saying on X: "I know today's incident near RAF Fairford will be deeply concerning for local residents and for many people following developments across the country". Britain said in July its armed forces were ready to protect the country from any attack after Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned it not to allow US bombers to fly from Fairford, saying any base used to launch attacks would be a legitimate target. "The arrest in the UK was fantastic," Trump told reporters, saying it was "an amazing job". "We had them under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort and working with the British worked out great ... We had them under view for a long time, and we got them," Trump added. On Sunday morning the base was blocked by armed police while large ‌machinery also prevented access, and Reuters witnesses said security ‌had been increased at other bases used by ⁠the US, with armoured vehicles and soldiers at the gates of RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in eastern England. DECLARATION OF A ⁠MAJOR INCIDENTA local farmer told the Daily Telegraph newspaper ⁠she had alerted police after seeing the vans and men acting suspiciously as she drove home from a party. "I saw a group of Middle Eastern-looking young guys running off through the trees. Some of them had masks or balaclavas on, and they all scattered ahead of us as we drove back past," she told the paper. "Some of them ran into the fields, and some of them turned to run towards the air base ... I mean, you don't see masked men running around at half one in the morning ​in the countryside near a secure air base and not have concerns." Local councillor Tristan Wilkinson told Reuters there had been a recent security alert at Fairford and surveillance had been stepped up. "So there was a specific threat about six weeks ago from the Iranians on this base. At the time, there was increased surveillance around the area," he said. A spokesperson for the US Air Force declined to discuss specific force protection measures at the base. "The 501st Combat Support Wing and our fellow UK-based Wings remain vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety and security of our US service members, civilians, contractors, and their families," the spokesperson said. British ministers have also previously briefed providers of critical infrastructure on the threat posed by Russia, with the government increasingly concerned ‌about possible sabotage operations and cyberattacks.

London's Metropolitan Police this week launched an expanded fleet of e-bikes to tackle criminals committing street crimes such as phone thefts in the British capital, with the expansion described by one senior officer as a "game changer".The Met is deploying 20 new e-bikes, which are capable of speeds of up to 50 miles per hour (80kph) and able to follow suspects off roads and even up stairs, aiming to tackle so-called snatch offences.During a patrol on Wednesday, one Met officer hailed the impact of the new e-bikes and the force's use of drones, though he said their "regular customers" had already learned to adapt to the police's shift patterns.The Met says the bikes have particularly helped them tackle mobile phone thefts, with statistics showing offences in the 12 months to May down from about 68,000 to 54,000.But the number of "positive outcomes", which the Met describes as offences resulting in a caution, charge or other criminal disposal, remains below 1%.Kaya Comer-Schwartz, London's deputy mayor for policing and crime, told Reuters that tackling offences like phone thefts needed to come alongside "improving the wider criminal justice system and supporting victims".LONDON CRIME IN FOCUSRight-wing politicians and public figures, including US President Donald Trump and X owner Elon Musk, have frequently commented on crime in Britain and London in particular, with Trump claiming there were "no-go" areas for police in London.While crime had been on a general upward trend as policing funding declined, the latest figures show neighbourhood crimes such as thefts, robberies and burglaries in London decreased in the year to June. Last month, London Mayor Sadiq Khan criticised people online and abroad who "have been trying to talk London down".Louise Puddefoot, the Met's deputy assistant commissioner for frontline policing, said discussion of crime in the capital was not something the force focused on.She told Reuters: "I think my job is to show people that we're tackling criminality, provide the data and the figures so they appreciate that we're not the most dangerous capital city around and provide that reassurance."It's probably not my job to kind of get into the political motivations for that commentary, but I think all we can do is show that we're tackling criminality and reassuring communities." 

 Two people were killed at a school near Berlin and a suspect arrested, police said yesterday, with local media saying the victims were an 18-year-old woman student and a 30-year-old man.Police said in a statement that they received several phonecalls at around 1:45pm local time (1145 GMT) about the incident at a secondary school in the town of Gosen-Neu Zittau, set in a forested area just outside the German capital in Brandenburg state."Two fatally injured people were found at the scene," police said, adding that they currently believe the incident was "linked to a relationship, not a random act".They confirmed that a 19-year-old German man had been arrested and was "strongly suspected" of being responsible.The Maerkische Allgemeine Zeitung (MAZ) newspaper reported online that he was the ex-boyfriend of the woman killed, citing sources close to the investigation.It said the 30-year-old man was believed to have died while trying to intervene, without specifying whether a knife or other weapon had been used.The speaker of Brandenburg's regional parliament Ulrike Liedtke called the incident a "cowardly femicide"."The fact that we once again had to witness deadly violence against a woman fills me with deep sorrow and anger."I am shaken that a citizen who showed moral courage and wanted to help also lost his life in this terrible act," Liedtke said.State premier Dietmar Woidke said: "Our schools should be a safe haven for our young people. Here, a school has become the scene of an unimaginable act of violence."Images from the streets near the secondary school showed multiple emergency service vehicles. Two rescue helicopters were also deployed.The private Docemus school said that while regular classes would be cancelled today, the school "will remain open to any students who wish to come to the campus", the MAZ said."Together with our staff and professional support personnel, we want to provide them with a safe space where they can gather, talk to one another and process what has happened together."Last month, two girls were seriously wounded and a 16-year-old suspect was arrested after an attack at a secondary school in southern Germany.Authorities said at the time that the suspect in that attack had been suffering a "mental health emergency". 

An 80-year-old woman died in the fast-moving Bald Range wildfire in British Columbia's wine country, Canadian police said, after the blaze nearly doubled in size over the weekend and forced the evacuation of people in the area.The death was the first reported as a result of the wildfire in the region, which has been shrouded in smoke and fire as hot and dry conditions increased the scale of the blaze.The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a statement late on Sunday that the Meadow Valley resident was evacuating her home with a family member when she reportedly died suddenly. Police believe her death to be a result of the wildfire and are investigating, the statement said.Nearby Summerland, a district municipality with about 12,000 people, has a significant senior population that was evacuated over the weekend. The senior people's homes were given advance notice, Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes said.Canada has experienced a hot summer this year, sparking fires in remote forests and other regions, leading to more than 4,600 fires burning 4 million hectares of land.Officials said the Bald Range wildfire triggered the largest evacuation event in British Columbia so far this summer. More than 20,000 people across the province have been forced to leave their homes. The United States is also grappling with wildfires. Evacuees forced to flee a cluster of fires near Spokane, Washington, were allowed back to their homes on Sunday.At the height of the conflagration, as many as 64,000 residents were under evacuation orders.The BC Wildfire Service said on Monday it expects lightning to start new wildfires in the Okanagan region, which has been receiving limited rain. High temperatures and heightened wind gusts will continue in the Okanagan and southeastern regions of BC, which can increase fires, the agency said. The Bald Range fire has now spread over 13,600 hectares since it was discovered on Friday. 

Police Academy honours graduates His Excellency the Minister of Interior, Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) and Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Police Academy Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani attended Thursday the graduation of the second cohort of the Master of Law and Master of Security Studies programmes at the Police Academy’s College of Graduate Studies. The ceremony also celebrated graduates of the 11th mandatory qualifying course for civilian university graduates at the Police College and the fourth such course for female graduates at the Women’s Police Institute. Sheikh Khalifa honoured the graduates and launched the Police Academy’s new website as part of efforts to enhance its digital services. He later attended the graduation of the sixth group taking part in the seventh Police of Tomorrow programme (Summer 2026), in the presence of senior officials, officers and the graduates’ families.

The Ministry of Interior received Sunday a delegation from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral security co-operation and expand the exchange of expertise. The Saudi delegation was headed by Major General Dr Ibrahim Satam al-Anzi, director-general of the General Department of Legal Affairs at the General Directorate of Public Security. The delegation toured the Correctional Institutions Department, the Judgments Enforcement Department, the Police Academy, the Juvenile Police Department, the Police Rescue Department (Al-Fazaa) and the Capital Security Department to review best practices and exchange expertise across various areas of security and policing.  

 The Police Academy has celebrated the graduation of the third and fourth groups of the seventh edition of the Police of Tomorrow Programme (Summer 2026), with a total of 400 students. The assistant undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Technical and Specialised Affairs, Major-General (Staff) Abdullah bin Mohammed al-Suwaidi; Police Academy president Major-General Abdulrahman Majid al-Sulaiti; and Police Academy vice-president and director of the Police College, Colonel Dr Fahad Saeed al-Subaie, attended the graduation ceremony along with a number of Ministry of Interior (MoI) officers and the students’ parents. The ceremony featured segments showcasing the skills the students acquired throughout the programme, which aims to strengthen national identity, instill the values of loyalty and belonging, develop leadership skills, and foster a sense of responsibility through a range of sports, military, and educational activities.  

His Excellency the Minister of Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani presented certificates Thursday to the second batch of graduates of the Security Command and Staff Programme.  The minister, who is also chairman of the Supreme Council of the Police Academy, handed the certificates to participants who completed the requirements of the programme, which is run by the academy's College of Graduate Studies. Heads and commanders of military and security agencies attended the ceremony. 

Australia cricket great David Warner pleaded guilty on Wednesday to drink driving and will be sentenced later this year, court documents showed.Warner, who is one of Australia's best-known sportsmen, was accused of being at the wheel of a van and stopping short of a random testing site, before being breath-tested, arrested and taken to a police station.His lawyer appeared at a Sydney court to enter a guilty plea on one count of "middle range" drink-driving.Former opening batsman Warner, who captains Sydney Thunder in the domestic T20 Big Bash League, did not appear in court."So many of us make those poor decisions. I think what's important is accepting and being accountable for those poor decisions," lawyer Bobby Hill told a hearing earlier this year."It doesn't matter if you're a tradesman, a doctor or one of the best opening batsmen in the world, that danger exists for every one of us."Warner will be sentenced on August 18.  

His Excellency Minister of Interior and Commander of the Internal Security Force (Lekhwiya) Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Police Academy, presided over the first 2026 meeting of the Academy's Supreme Council.Held at the Ministry of Interior headquarters, the meeting was attended by Their Excellencies members of the Supreme Council of the Police Academy.During the meeting, the Council discussed a number of agenda items related to academic and training matters.It also approved the conferral of master's degrees on students who had fulfilled all requirements for the College of Graduate Studies' master's programs.Moreover, the Council reviewed several matters within the Academy's jurisdiction and adopted the appropriate decisions thereon, as part of efforts to develop the educational and training system, thereby strengthening the Police Academy's role in preparing qualified security personnel.
