Verstappen claims first win of year in chaotic Bahrain GP in Malaysia

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen secured his and Red Bull's first win this year with an imperious drive Sunday in chaotic conditions in a storm-delayed Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Nine years after winning the last F1 race at the Sepang International Circuit, the 29-year-old Dutchman came through a wild afternoon of accidents and incidents for his 72nd victory and first since Abu Dhabi last year. In a race of shifting tyre strategies, he came home 2.307 seconds ahead of championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton who took third after a thrilling recovery drive. His Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc was fourth, having fallen to last place in the early laps, ahead of Isack Hadjar in the second Red Bull, McLaren's Oscar Piastri and the Racing Bull of Liam Lawson. Two-time champion Fernando Alonso finished a season-best eighth for Aston Martin ahead of world champion Lando Norris and Racing Bull rookie Arvid Lindblad. The result extended Antonelli's lead to 84 points ahead of teammate George Russell, who retired after a late power failure under a safety car. "It is really nice to win after the year we've had and all the progression we've made," said a delighted Verstappen. "It was very hectic with a lot of different things, but we made the right call with the inters (intermediate tyres)." Antonelli congratulated him and added: "It was the maximum we could have done. We struggled, but I am happy to come away with P2." Russell, though, said he was "beyond disappointment" as luck deserted him late in the race. "You've almost got to laugh... it's just so many times this season it's happened."I don't need to say I think it's gone but, of course, it's exceptionally unlikely and that's just the reality."- 'Tough race' -Hamilton was greeted by a roar from the big crowd."What a tough race that was," he said."I was more than a minute back after we made the wrong call on tyres at the start and everyone was pulling away."The race had followed a protracted 100-minute delay following a tropical rainstorm, and began with half the field on intermediate tyres. Both Mercedes promptly swamped Verstappen, Antonelli taking the lead in turn one, followed by Russell. Hamilton, on soft slicks, had no grip and tumbled down the order from second on the grid as it became clear that the conditions remained treacherous.  It all changed on lap nine when Valtteri Bottas slid off into the gravel and the safety car was deployed, bringing nearly everyone in for dry tyres with Antonelli taking mediums and Verstappen softs. Hamilton stayed out and upon the resumption Verstappen pounced to sweep round Antonelli and regain a lead he would not relinquish.Hamilton continued his recovery, slicing through the field and by lap 23 had dispensed with Lawson to take fifth. He closed up within six seconds of the Frenchman before the pair pitted on lap 31. "This tyre feels terrible," said Hamilton of his new mediums.A late virtual and then full safety car saw everyone pit for fresh softs. Russell's retirement enabled Hamilton to get on to the podium when he passed Hadjar in the final four-lap dash to the chequered flag.

Red Bull's Verstappen grabs pole position for Bahrain GP

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen grabbed pole position for the Bahrain Grand Prix being held in Malaysia with the fastest time in Saturday's qualifying session. Red Bull's Verstappen, currently sixth in the world championship standings, took his first pole of the year ahead of seven-time British world champion Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari.It will be the first time the Dutch driver has started at the front of the grid since the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last season. Verstappen's teammate Isack Hadjar set the third-fastest qualifying time but the Frenchman will drop five places on the starting grid due to a penalty imposed on Red Bull for fitting new engine components beyond the permitted quota. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Italy finished fourth in qualifying.The Bahrain Grand Prix is being raced in Malaysia due to disruption in the Gulf linked to the US-led war with Iran.

Antonelli tops times in final practice at Bahrain GP

World championship leader Kimi Antonelli topped the times for Mercedes ahead of both Red Bulls in Saturday's third and final free practice ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.The 20-year-old Italian produced a late fastest lap of 1min 36.302sec to outpace four-time champion Max Verstappen by 0.278 seconds with Isack Hadjar third, adrift by half a second. His Mercedes team-mate George Russell was fourth, six-tenths off the pace, ahead of the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. World champion Lando Norris was seventh ahead of McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri. Franco Colapinto, who faces a 15-place grid penalty for Sunday's race after crashing in Baku last week and taking a new engine, was ninth for Alpine ahead of Racing Bulls' rookie Arvid Lindblad.Verstappen once again showed his prowess with a brief appearance on softs in an uneventful session run in hot and humid conditions, but the action was mainly concerned with tyre evaluation and preservation. It began in leisurely fashion with only two cars venturing out in the heat, with the serious stuff only starting when Leclerc and Norris joined in after 15 minutes. The first meaningful times did not come until Norris topped Leclerc and Gasly in 1:37.161, as most teams looked to save their tyres for qualifying later Saturday. With 25 minutes run, both Mercedes, both Red Bulls, Antonelli and Hamilton remained in the pits, while Norris and Piastri, on mediums, topped the time-screens ahead of Leclerc, on hards, with the rest all on softs. The action paused mid-session for three minutes when a red flag as Oliver Bearman's Haas shed some brake shrouding at Turn 10.The big guns then joined the fray, with Antonelli going top in 1:36.924 ahead of Russell. Hamilton, still struggling with a faulty mirror, was then impeded on his first push run on softs. Ferrari had been fined 10,000 euros ($11,260) on Friday when his mirror partly caused an impeding incident. It was a mostly unspectacular session until the final minutes, as the drivers lapped with care to keep tyres cool and fresh before their flying laps -- and needing to retain multiple sets of softs in particular.

Antonelli eager to 're-establish order' as F1 returns to Malaysia

Kimi Antonelli has vowed to bounce back and rebuild his runaway advantage in the drivers' championship as Formula One returns to Malaysia this weekend.Sepang will host Sunday's race in place of Bahrain, which was supposed to stage the Grand Prix in April but was cancelled because of war in the Middle East.The 20-year-old Antonelli, who finished fifth last weekend in Azerbaijan, leads Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 66 points following the Briton's commanding triumph in Baku.Hampered by a hydraulics failure in practice, Italy's Antonelli crashed in qualifying and started 16th on the grid as he was beaten by Russell for the first time in six races.Antonelli said he intends to "re-establish the order" at Sepang International Circuit, which last hosted Formula One in 2017."He's always been my rival," he said of Russell's bid to overhaul him and snatch the title."But I'll make sure I re-establish the order and just make sure that I am back to my usual level."Antonelli joked that he was "driving more like my grandma" in Azerbaijan.Russell said his "game plan" is to try and prevail in all of the remaining eight race weekends this season. 'IRRELEVANT'Antonelli, seeking to be Italy's first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953, was only 11 the last time Formula One was at Sepang.That race was won by Red Bull's four-time world champion Max Verstappen, who finished a close second behind Russell last Sunday and proved that he has the speed to become a threat to the Mercedes pair as the campaign approaches a climax.He and team-mate Isack Hadjar, who was third, demonstrated Red Bull's power and straight-line speed in Baku.But Ferrari and McLaren will also be major threats at Sepang in what should be a closely fought contest.Ferrari will be in battling mood as boss Fred Vasseur shrugs off rumours linking former Red Bull chief Christian Horner with his job and rallies the team to fight for every remaining point."We will bring upgrades and we will continue to push until the last corner," he said.He said that data from the Malaysia race in 2017 would be "practically irrelevant"."Everything has changed: tyres, engines and chassis are all completely different for everyone," he said.Ferrari on Tuesday declared they had "full confidence" in Vasseur, who had expressed frustration at being asked about Horner "25 times a day" in Baku. 'EMOTIONS ARE HIGH'World champion Lando Norris of McLaren also had reason to comment after Baku when he apologised to Alpine's Franco Colapinto for saying that the Argentine should be banned.Colapinto collided with his Alpine team-mate Pierre Gasly, who in turn hit Norris. All three were taken out of the race."I sent Franco a message apologising for the comments I made that I simply should not have said," he said."I know better and emotions were running high, but that is not an excuse, it was wrong of me."After the chaos of the fast streets of Baku, a more "normal" race is in prospect, although the usual rain and storms are a factor in Malaysia.Half of the drivers will rediscover a much-loved fast, sweeping and flowing circuit.Others are taking it on for the first time.Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton will seek to add to his shared record (with Michael Schumacher) of five poles and one win.Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso will be hunting a record-equalling fourth Sepang victory.In a quirk, the race will officially still be called the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Expanding halal economy opens new avenues for Qatar-Malaysia trade

Bilateral trade between Qatar and Malaysia reached QR402.6mn in the first two months of 2026, signalling continued economic confidence as local commercial interest expands into non-traditional halal sectors.  The early momentum follows a robust QR3.10bn in total bilateral trade throughout 2025 and a peak of QR5.76bn in 2024, according to trade figures the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) shared with Gulf Times.  Highlighting this strategic focus during his participation at the ‘22nd Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS 2026)’ in Kuala Lumpur, Qatar Chamber board member Dr Mohamed bin Jawhar al-Mohammed explained that local business engagement in halal markets is rapidly diversifying.  “The chamber’s participation in the expo reflects the growing interest of the Qatari business community in the global halal economy, which now extends beyond food and beverages to sectors, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, tourism, logistics, technology, and packaging,” noted al-Mohammed in a Qatar Chamber statement.  Al-Mohammed lauded the strong economic and trade relations between Qatar and Malaysia, emphasising that significant potential exists for further private-sector cooperation to connect Qatari companies with global suppliers, investors, and business partners.  Following yesterday’s opening, al-Mohammed toured the MIHAS exhibition halls accompanied by MATRADE officials and held meetings with local and international entities to discuss private-sector partnerships.Al-Mohammed pointed out that MIHAS provides a platform for connecting global producers, exporters, and investors, noting that Qatar Chamber aims to facilitate joint investment opportunities across halal value chains.  He met with Norshahrin bin Hamidon, president of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, and Dato’ Dr Sirajuddin bin Suhaimee, director general of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation.  Trade composition between the two nations shows a balanced exchange, with Malaysia serving as a reliable supplier of machinery, electrical products, processed food, and palm oil products, according to MATRADE.  Qatar remains a pivotal energy and chemical partner, supplying petroleum products, chemicals, and petrochemical derivatives that serve as essential inputs for Malaysia’s manufacturing, industrial, and energy sectors, MATRADE also reported.

Doha conference to put social impact at heart of sustainable development

Doha will host the fourth International Scientific Conference on Social Responsibility on September 21, bringing together academics, researchers, experts and representatives of government, private-sector and non-profit organisations.The 2026 event, titled “From Action to Impact: Measuring the Societal Impact of Responsible Practices in Sustainable Development”, is organised by the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies in co-operation with the International Islamic University Malaysia, Qatar National Library, the Regional Network for Consulting and the Arab Journal of Social Responsibility.The organising committee announced conference details at a press briefing held Wednesday at its headquarters. Dr Mohamed bin Saif al-Kuwari, International Ambassador for Social Responsibility and conference chair, told reporters that the event is being held under the honorary patronage of His Excellency Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, Minister of State and President of Qatar National Library. He said the conference would place measuring societal impact at the centre of discussions on the future of social responsibility and sustainable development.Dr al-Kuwari said social responsibility is undergoing a fundamental shift, with institutions increasingly expected to show not only what initiatives they have implemented but also how those efforts have changed lives and communities. He said the conference would promote a move from a “culture of action” to a “culture of impact”, looking beyond the volume of activities to assess the results, changes and value generated across economic, social and environmental spheres.Several organisations will be honoured for corporate practices that have created social impact, while an award will be presented for the best scientific research paper. The fifth issue of the Arab Journal of Social Responsibility will also be launched.Khalid al-Rumaithi, vice-president of Internal Communications at QNB Group, said the group’s sponsorship reflected its belief that social responsibility has become an integral part of corporate strategy and of the role institutions play in advancing sustainable development.

Five decades on, Malaysia-Qatar partnership gains new momentum

As Malaysia and Qatar prepare to mark 52 years of diplomatic relations, both countries are poised to deepen co-operation in trade, technology and food security, Malaysian ambassador Faizal Razali has said. Speaking to Gulf Times as Malaysia marks its 69th Independence Day today, and Malaysia Day on September 16, the envoy said bilateral ties had entered a strategic phase. He described the relationship as developing through three stages: establishing diplomatic connectivity, building economic and people-to-people links, and creating a strategic partnership capable of addressing shared international challenges. “Malaysia is a gateway for Qatar to tap into the Asean market,” Razali said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. “In the same way, Malaysia looks at Qatar as a hub to expand in this region.” He said strong political engagement between the two leaderships had helped establish a solid foundation for economic ties, with energy, food products, and services among the areas connecting the two markets. Independence was not only freedom from colonial rule, Razali elaborated, but also “liberating your mind from being colonised”, allowing Malaysians to guide their own development and progress. The Malaysia MADANI values, which incorporate sustainability, prosperity, innovation, respect, trust and compassion, place inclusive progress at the heart of that national journey, he added. That outlook is also shaping Malaysia’s priorities with Qatar. Around 30 Malaysian companies are registered and operate in Qatar across construction, infrastructure, information technology, and services, with support from engagement with Qatari institutions and the Malaysia Business Executive Council – Qatar (MBEC) in Doha, he noted. Razali identified Islamic finance as an additional growth area, including sukuk, fintech and Shariah-compliant digital products. He also pointed to the halal economy, noting that Malaysia will host the Malaysia International Halal Showcase from September 23-26. “Halal is about sustainable development,” he said, explaining that co-operation could extend beyond food into logistics, services and other responsible business sectors. Food security presents another opportunity. Razali proposed stronger supply connectivity, including a possible “green corridor” to ensure the continuous movement of essential food products between Malaysia and Qatar during periods of disruption. Malaysia could contribute through palm oil, agricultural products, food manufacturing and related technologies, while Qatar could serve as a regional distribution hub. He also highlighted semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, digital infrastructure, port management and tourism as areas with room for closer collaboration. Malaysia’s semiconductor experience, he said, could support joint training, research and higher-value manufacturing. Beyond government and business, some 6,500 Malaysians working in key sectors in Qatar give the relationship a deeply personal dimension.Razali said community organisations promote Malaysian culture through food, language, sport, education and public events. He cited the recent 5km Merdeka walkathon at Doha Festival City and a blood donation drive in May, when around 100 Malaysians donated through Hamad Medical Corporation as a gesture of giving back to Qatar. The envoy urged Malaysians abroad to maintain “professionalism, integrity and pride” while remaining united across their cultural diversity. “To our Qatari friends, we must say a sincere thank you for hosting us,” he said, lauding the warmth and respect extended to Malaysians over the decades. He said the task ahead is to carry the relationship into a new phase through stronger trade, investment, education, tourism, technology and lasting connections between the two peoples. Malaysia, he stressed, remains a trusted friend and partner of Qatar.

Malaysia said yesterday that it has finalised the first phase of a voluntary repatriation programme that will see some 1,500 Myanmar refugees return home. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim previously stated that Myanmar had agreed to repatriate 5,000 ethnic Rohingya refugees amid rising tensions with local communities in Malaysia.The first phase takes place on September 29 and involves 1,476 Myanmar nationals who have been identified by the Myanmar government, Malaysia's Home Ministry said."The repatriation process will use two Myanmar Navy warships and one hospital ship," it said.The Ministry said this year about 4,008 individuals, primarily ethnic Rohingya, will be channelled into the Refugee Registration Document (DPP) programme, while 5,000 other individuals will undergo the voluntary repatriation process, as agreed with the Myanmar government.The Ministry said there were 10,388 Myanmar nationals at immigration detention depots as of August 15, though not all can be considered refugees."The Immigration Department is working with the police to verify the identity, nationality and security background of each detainee, with the process expected to conclude by the fourth quarter of the year," it said.The Ministry added it will continue to identify individuals who are eligible and willing to return voluntarily.

Malaysia, Qatar eye gateway role to drive mutual growth: Envoy

Malaysia and Qatar are exploring deeper strategic alignment beyond energy and diplomacy to encompass investment, digital infrastructure, and economic diversification, amid shifts in global trade patterns and inter-regional partnerships.“Ultimately, Malaysia can position itself as a gateway to Asean, while Qatar serves as a gateway to the Middle East, creating a complementary and mutually beneficial partnership,” Malaysian ambassador Faizal Razali told Gulf Times in an exclusive interview.Razali described Qatar’s foreign policy as “pragmatic and diversification-driven,” underpinned by stability-enhancing diplomacy and a preference for maintaining open channels with multiple global actors, which he said, reinforces its image as “a reliable partner for trade and investment.”The ambassador lauded Qatar for actively pursuing economic diplomacy to widen market access, attract capital, and build future sectors, such as technology, sustainability, logistics, and advanced services.He further noted that Qatar is also moving into new sectors, particularly AI and innovative industries, with projects being reactivated and resumed and a clear push to bring in fresh investment.Razali said as Qatar continues to seek opportunities to expand its export reach within the Middle East, partners such as Malaysia are well-placed to support this growth, particularly by contributing capabilities in areas that deepen the country’s industrial and commercial ecosystem.Qatar’s continued growth in its business ecosystem and industrial capability presents an opportunity for partners such as Malaysia to contribute meaningfully, particularly in areas where complementary strengths can add value, he pointed out.The ambassador further noted that Qatar remains highly attractive in terms of quality of life, particularly for families and expatriates, describing the environment as safe, stable, and welcoming, factors that make it a preferred destination for foreign professionals.He said existing platforms such as the Joint Business Council (JBC) and Malaysia-Qatar business linkages provide a foundation that both sides should further activate and utilise, and called for a more structured Malaysia-Qatar task force or engagement platform, particularly in key sectors, to drive cooperation more effectively.Companies from both countries should be encouraged to work more closely together, with Malaysia serving as a bridge into Asean markets and Qatar acting as a gateway into the Middle East, he said.On the role of Malaysia’s embassy in facilitating bilateral business, the ambassador said the mission has established the Malaysia Business Executive Council (MBEC) to strengthen the Malaysian business community in Qatar and serve as a platform for coordinating engagements and identifying opportunities.He said the embassy has facilitated high-level meetings with key Qatari stakeholders, including the Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs HE Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Sayed, Qatari Businessmen Association (QBA), and Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani, while also leveraging Asean-related engagements where relevant.The embassy is also encouraging the MBEC to engage with other business councils, including those representing India and Bangladesh, to broaden regional networks and expand collaboration opportunities, he noted.The ambassador said the embassy is promoting Malaysian participation in key trade fairs and exhibitions in Qatar, organising sector-focused trade missions targeting high-potential industries, such as halal, food security, and the digital economy.Among the flagship events being promoted are the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) and Visit Malaysia 2026, he noted, adding that the embassy is also engaging Qatar Post to facilitate e-commerce linkages and leveraging Malaysia’s network of 11 e-commerce hubs to support bilateral trade.There are currently 37 Malaysian companies operating in Qatar, the ambassador said, spanning a wide range of sectors including construction, infrastructure, ICT, and services.He said doing business in Qatar has matured well beyond an exploratory stage, with the Qatar brand, built on its unique environment, strategic position as an important hub, and the breadth of opportunities available, remaining highly credible and appealing to the Malaysian business community.“Malaysia’s strong brand, particularly in terms of quality, reliability and capability, remains an important asset in Qatar. There is an opportunity for Qatar to further open up and provide greater exposure to Malaysian businesses to expand their presence,” he emphasised.Addressing both nations directly, Razali said Qatar should be seen not only as an energy partner but as a strategic investment and collaboration destination, while Malaysia offers stability, trustworthiness, and strong capabilities across multiple sectors.“The synergy between both countries can be strengthened further, particularly through deeper economic engagement. For both, the world is looking for stability, but stability without growth is dead. Malaysia is not looking just for investment; we are looking for partners, and Qatar has been one.” Razali added.
