  Qatar Stars League champions Al Sadd will take on holders Al Gharafa in the final of the 54th Amir Cup today at Khalifa International Stadium, with Qatar’s most prestigious football title at stake.Having already secured qualification for next season’s AFC Champions League Elite by winning the league title, Al Sadd are aiming to complete a domestic double, while Al Gharafa hope to retain the trophy and secure a direct place in Asia’s premier club competition.Al Sadd are appearing in their 30th Amir Cup final and hold a record 19 titles, 10 more than nearest rivals Al Arabi. However, Al Gharafa have won both previous Amir Cup finals between the two sides - a 4-1 victory in 2002 and a 4-3 penalty shootout win after a goalless draw in 2012.Al Sadd have enjoyed an impressive run to the final. They defeated second division side Al Markhiya 2-1 in the Round of 16, overcame league runners-up Al Shamal 6-4 in the quarter-finals and then cruised past Al Duhail 4-1 in the semi-finals.Al Gharafa, seeking a ninth Amir Cup title, began with a 2-0 victory over Al Kharaitiyat before edging Umm Salal 2-1 in the quarter-finals. They booked their place in the final after beating Al Wakrah 3-2 on penalties following a goalless semi-final draw.

Defending champions Al Gharafa will begin their Amir Cup title defence Friday with a quarter-final clash against the recently-relegated Qatar Stars League (QSL) side Umm Salal at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium at 8pm.Despite a promising start to the season, Al Gharafa endured a dip in form in the recently concluded QSL campaign, eventually finishing fourth under coach Pedro Martinez. Speaking at pre-match press conference Thursday, Martins admitted the challenge ahead would not be easy, but voiced confidence in his squad’s ability to rise to the occasion despite recent struggles.“Match against Umm Salal will be difficult and a great challenge for us based on our previous meetings in different tournaments, and we must be in a very high technical condition to compete for the title again,” said Martins. Al Gharafa booked their place in the quarter-finals with a solid 2–0 victory over Al Kharaitiyat, while Umm Salal advanced after an mpressive 4–2 win against Al Ahli.  Umm Salal coach Ruben Albis, meanwhile, struck an optimistic tone ahead of the encounter after being relegated from the top flight. “We did not perform well in the league and now face the defending champions, so it will be a tough task,” he said. “However, I believe in my players and their ability to step up in crucial moments. Amir Cup matches have a different nature compared to league competitions, and that motivates the team to fight harder and give everything to achieve our goal.”In the other quarter-final ties Friday, QSL champions Al Sadd will take on Al Shamal yet again after the QSL final round tie on Monday at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan will meet Al Wakrah at Al Thumama Stadium while Al Duhail will lock horns with Al Arabi at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.Al Sadd coach Roberto Mancini, said: “Facing Al Shamal will be very important as they are an organised team, and we faced them a few days ago in the decisive match for the league title.”“We must focus on the match. Cup tournaments are different, and the Amir Cup itself is different. Everyone knows its importance for the club, the fans, and the players.”“From my point of view, all the teams in the Amir Cup have a chance to win, and it is not just Al Sadd that are favourites.”“Almost all the teams are of a similar level, and we must always remember that the Amir Cup is a different competition with its own special challenges.”Al Shamal coach David Prats said his team was ready for another Al Sadd challenge.“Yes, we will also participate for the first time in the AFC Champions League, but all of that should make us focus more on what is more important, which is the Amir Cup and facing Al Sadd again in the quarter-finals,” said Prats.He added: “When you play against Al Sadd, it is a very difficult match and we expect it to be similar to the last one. We know their capabilities and players, and we are ready for the match, the competition, and the enjoyment.”“We will try to attack strongly and defend strongly. What is important is that the players deal with the pressure and face it because we want to enjoy the game while competing strongly.”“It is a cup tournament, and there is only one chance. We are ready to perform strongly.”Al Rayyan coach Vicente Moreno confirmed his team’s readiness to face Al Wakrah. “Our team’s goal is bigger than just getting past the current stage, as we aim to win the most prestigious title in Qatari football.”He added that he knows Al Wakrah well, as he had been in charge of the team’s technical management since the beginning of the current season, before moving a short time ago to coach Al Rayyan, stressing that the task will not be easy in light of the outstanding levels possessed by the players.Moreno pointed out that his team enters the Amir Cup competition with a lot of motivation after winning the Qatar Stars Cup and the Gulf Champions League titles. Al Wakrah’s Chilean coach Jose Luis Sierra said that his players will do their best to win. The coach explained that he took over the technical management of his team a short time ago, but the team is ready to defend their chances of going ahead in the tournament.Al Duhail coach Djamel Belmadi said his team faces a tough challenge against Al Arabi. “We have a tough opponent and all teams in Amir Cup are now aiming to reach the final, so there are no easy matches. Every game is evenly balanced and requires a high level of concentration,” he said.Cosmin Contra, coach of Al Arabi said, “The defeat we suffered in the last league match has been painful and the recovery time has been short.  On paper, Al Duhail are stronger but we will look to deliver a strong performance and aim to qualify for the semi-finals.” Qatar’s most prestigious tournament features 20 team – 12 sides from the QSL combined with eight from the second division.

Al Arabi Club emerged champions of the 13th edition of the Qatar Basketball Cup after defeating Al Shamal 77-71 in the final Thursday at Al Gharafa Hall. Al Arabi raised their tally to five titles –their third consecutive triumph –setting a record for the most Qatar Cup wins and surpassing Al Gharafa’s four titles. Meanwhile, Qatar SC, Al Sadd, Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah each hold one title. Al Shamal’s Tyree Quannell Crump was the game’s top scorer with 36 points, while Al Arabi’s Elmedin Kikanovic led his team with 28 points. Following the match, Mohammed bin Saad Al-Mughaseeb, President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, Sheikh Tamim bin Fahd Al-Thani, President of Al Arabi Club, Abdullah Shamsan Al-Sada, Vice-President of Al Shamal Club, and Saadoun Sabah Al-Kuwari, Secretary-General of the Qatar Basketball Federation, presented the trophy and gold medals to the champions along with a financial prize of QR600,000. Al Shamal received silver medals and a prize of QR400,000. Al Arabi had reached the final after a marathon semi-final against Al Rayyan, decided in overtime with a 104-103 victory. Al Shamal qualified by defeating Al Wakrah 71-56 in the other semi-final. 

Al Gharafa’s Qatar Stars League title ambitions suffered a setback after a 0-2 defeat to Qatar SC, while Al Shamal climbed into joint second place with a dramatic late win over Al Wakrah as the league resumed Thursday following a short suspension due to regional tensions.In the third match of the night, Al Duhail returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Al Sailiya at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.The results left Al Shamal and Al Gharafa level on 34 points, four behind leaders Al Sadd, who are in action today. Qatar SC moved up to 27 points, while Al Duhail climbed to sixth place with 24 points.At Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Shamal secured a hard-fought over Al Wakrah thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Pau Prim. The two sides battled evenly for most of the match, struggling to find a breakthrough despite creating several chances.Neither side was able to score in regulation time, though the crossbar denied both teams once during the contest. Wakrah’s task became more difficult in the closing stages when Radwan Berkane was shown a red card around 10 minutes from time.Shamal eventually found the decisive moment deep into stoppage time when Spanish midfielder Prim struck from the centre of the box following a corner kick to secure three valuable points for the visitors.At Al Thumama Stadium, Qatar SC delivered a strong performance to defeat Al Gharafa and deal a blow to the Cheetahs’ pursuit of the title. Musab Battat gave Qatar SC the lead in the 26th minute, beating goalkeeper Khalifa Ababacar with a shot that deflected slightly off a defender after a through cross.Gharafa’s hopes of mounting a comeback were dented early in the second half when Seydou Sano was sent off in the 47th minute following a VAR review. The defender had brought down a charging Faiz Selemani outside the box, leaving the referee with little choice but to show a red card.With the numerical advantage, Qatar SC maintained control and doubled their lead in the 66th minute through Joao Pedro. The Brazilian forward sprinted onto a long ball and calmly finished past the advancing Ababacar to seal the victory. The crucial win lifted Qatar SC to 27 points, strengthening their push for a top-four finish.Meanwhile, Al Duhail produced one of their most convincing displays of the season as they thrashed Al Sailiya. Benjamin Bourigeaud was instrumental in the victory, contributing a goal and three assists, while Krzysztof Piatek scored twice as the Red Knights ended a difficult run of results.Piatek opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a powerful header from a Bourigeaud corner before doubling the lead just three minutes later, again heading home from another precise delivery by the French midfielder.The Polish striker then turned provider in the 63rd minute, setting up Bourigeaud to make it 3-0 with a composed finish. Ibrahima Bamba completed the scoring in the 78th minute to put the result beyond doubt.The win moved Al Duhail to 24 points and temporarily into sixth place, while Al Sailiya remained 10th with 15 points as they continue to battle near the bottom of the standings.Three more matches are scheduled today, including leaders Al Sadd hosting Umm Salal at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. Al Ahli will face Al Arabi at Al Thumama Stadium, while Al Rayyan take on Al Shahania at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. 

Defending champions Al Sadd scored a comfortable 3-1 win over table toppers Al Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League at the Thani Bin Jassim Stadium to cut down the gap to two points. Goals from Roberto Firmino (47th minute), Giovani Henrique (55th minute) and Akram Afif (90th +5 minute) helped propel The Wolves to 29 points in the standings, just behind Al Gharafa on 31 points.After a goalless first half, Al Sadd, who were recently crowned winners of the Qatar-UAE Super Cup’s Super Shield following their thrilling 3-2 defeat of UAE's Shabab Al Ahli, set the ball rolling for what ended up as an exciting win for Italian coach Roberto Mancini's team.Firmino latched on to a cross from Giovani that somehow managed to elude all of Al Gharafa's defenders to tap into a empty end. Al Sadd’s second and third goals were both beautiful display of fine teamwork that were perfectly finished to make the race for title more interesting. Al Gharafa's consolation goal came from Ayoub Al Oui, who pulled one back for The Cheetahs in the 65th minute with a powerful header from a cross by Amro Abdelfatah Surag.Pedro brace in Qatar SC winEarlier, Brazilian Joao Pedro scored a brace while Mohamed Emad Aiash scored one goal as Qatar SC prevailed over Al Ahli 3-1 at the Al Thumama Stadium. Aiash opened the scoring for the Kings in the 16th minute before Joao Pedro struck in the 48th and 72nd minutes.Aiash made a successful header after Al Ahli goalkeeper had blocked a first Niall Mason attempt following corner kick. Pedro broke in into the striking zone first from the right, and later from the left to register his two goals.Al Ahli’s consolation goal came from Driss Fettouhi, who drilled home a long ranger in the 87th minute. The win saw Qatar SC move up seventh with 20 points whereas Al Ahli remained ninth on 15 points. 

UAE's Sharjah were crowned champions of the third edition of Qatar-UAE Super Cup after defeating Al Gharafa on penalties at the Thani Bin Jassim Stadium.The match, which ended 1-1 in regulation time, saw Al Gharafa losing 5-4 during the penalty shootout, with Hyun Soo Jang missing the last kick for The Cheetahs after what had been an almost flawless kicks.The high-intensity match saw both sides wasting chances at goals in the first half. Yacine Brahimi had a glorious opportunity to give Al Gharafa an early lead in the 10th minute after pouncing on the rebound from Joselu's thunderous strike, but Sharjah's goalkeeper Adel al-Hosani made a superb double-save to deny the Algerian international the opportunity.Ferjani Sassi had his goal-bound header cleared on the line by Luan Pereira in the 61st minute, but the much-awaited opener eventually came three minutes later through Al Gharafa's Florinel Coman who finished off a sublime exchange of passes initiated by Ayoub al-Oui inside Sharjah's final third.The lead, however, only lasted for 10 minutes as Luan Pereira secured the equaliser for the Emirati side.Joselu had a great opportunity of restoring Al Gharafa's lead two minutes later, but the Spanish striker headed straight at al-Hosani from a swerving cross by Coman.With scoring chances being few and far between from thereon, the match headed into the decisive spot kicks, which the Emirati side ended up winning.
