Qatar’s Al Gharafa and Al Shamal endured contrasting fortunes in the AFC Champions League Elite on Monday. Gharafa suffered a 2-1 defeat to Iran’s Esteghlal at the Thani Bin Jassim Stadium, while Shamal were held to a goalless draw by Tractor in Muscat.Ferjani Sassi’s 48th-minute goal cancelled out a stunning strike by Jasir Asani in the first half before Hossein Goudarzi’s 60th-minute winner ensured Esteghlal finished with another three points.Both sides took their time to settle, with Esteghlal edging possession and Saman Fallah’s off-tangent header off a corner in the 12th minute their first look at goal.Another corner at the opposing end in the 21st minute gave the home side their chance to threaten, with Seydou Sano rising high in the box but nodding wide of the left post.There were no shots on target in the first half hour, but Asani made sure that the Iran Pro League side’s first strike in the 37th minute mattered when he came down the right and unleashed a spectacular 20-yard shot that dipped beyond Ahmad Kone’s fingertips and into the top left.Kone made a superb save from Saeid Saharkhizan four minutes into stoppage time while Habib Abbasi denied Al Gharafa’s first on-target attempts through Adam Ounas and Abdulrahman Faiz Al Rashidi to close the half.The Qatar outfit’s strong start to the second half paid off three minutes in when Sassi emerged from a pack of bodies inside the Esteghlal box to side-foot past Abbasi for the equaliser.Esteghlal, however, took advantage of slack goalkeeping by Kone in the 60th minute to regain the lead when Goudarzi was given too much space on the left and struck from range, his shot bouncing off the custodian’s palms and rolling into the bottom left.Saharkhizan saw his shot deflect off midfielder Ayoub Aloui in front of goal in the 79th minute while Abbasi made himself big to block Alaa Hasan’s point-blank effort five minutes later and Rustamjon Ashurnatov cleared off the line from Aloui to consign Al Gharafa to their second defeat.In Muscat, Tractor FC and Al Shamal SC played out a goalless draw. The stalemate sees Iran’s Tractor picking up their first point in the league Stage while Al Shamal settled for a second consecutive draw in their debut campaign.It was a cagey start with neither team able to gain a foothold on the game although Al Shamal enjoyed a lot more possession.In the 15th minute, there was a half-chance for the visitors when Ben Romdhane collected the ball on the left flank and tried to find Federico Bais in the box, only for Tractor goalkeeper Parsa Jafari to read the situation.As the first half progressed, Tractor started to get a grip on the game but their best effort was only a Shojae Khalilzadeh header in the 35th minute from Farshad Faraji’s long throw which bounced harmlessly into the grasp of Babacar Seck.The intensity improved after the interval as both teams went in search of the breakthrough.Yousouf Sabaly set up Bais for a rasping shot from outside the box in the 53rd minute which Jafari had to react fast to push over the bar.At the other end, Seck produced a brilliant double stop four minutes later, a strong right hand to parry Mohammd Naderi’s fierce drive before putting his body on the line to stop Danial Esmaelifar’s point-blank follow-up.Al Shamal had chances to snatch a late winner with Romdhane stopped by a superb Faraji sliding challenge, then Michael Termanini drove into the box only to drag his shot wide and in the end, both teams had to settle for a share of the spoils. 

Qatar’s Al Gharafa gave Al Hilal a stern test before going down 2-1 to the Saudi Arabian giants in their opening Asian Champions League Elite match in Riyadh on Tuesday.Al Hilal, bidding for a fifth Asian title, made the brighter start but the game was disrupted midway through the first half when both sides were reduced to 10 men.Al Gharafa took the game to Al Hilal in the opening minutes as Yassine Bounou was forced to make saves to deny Adam Ounas and Jang Hyun-soo as the home side started with 18-year-old Kader Meite up front.Al Hilal worked their way into the game with Gabriel Martinelli having a left foot effort from an acute angle saved by Ahmed Kone before Sergej Milinkovic-Savic nodded over unchallenged from a good position.The game took a turn in the 32nd minute when Crysencio Summerville was shown the red card for shoving Abdulrahman Al Rasheedi off the field but in the heated exchange, Ismael Bennacer was also sent off for tugging at the Al Hilal forward’s hair.Al Rasheedi was involved again when he tripped Saimon Bouabre in the box, gifting Al Hilal a late first half penalty which Ruben Never nervelessly slotted home in the third minute of added time.Al Hilal continued to test Kone’s reflexes after the interval with Neves, Martinelli and Bouabre all having a go but the Al Gharafa custodian stood strong to keep the Qatari side in the game.Maintaining sustained pressure, it was no surprise when the second goal arrived in the 72nd minute, Neves delivered a perfect cross to the back post for Milinkovic-Savic to power home from close range.Al Gharafa struck in stoppage time through a spectacular Alaaeddin Hasan strike from outside the box but it was nothing more than a consolation with the final whistle blowing seconds after the restart.A tough test awaits Al Hilal next as the Saudi Pro League side face another Qatari side in Al Sadd on October 13 while Al Gharafa will count on home advantage when they host Esteghlal FC of Iran a day earlier.

New signing Frank Magri struck twice, including a stoppage-time winner, as Al Gharafa overcame a spirited Al Shahania 2-1 to make a winning start to their Qatar Stars League campaign at Khalifa International Stadium on Friday.The Cameroonian forward opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before sealing all three points in the second minute of stoppage time. Al Shahania equalised through Francesco Antonucci from the penalty spot in the fourth minute of added time in the first half.Al Gharafa came close to taking the lead a minute earlier when a Yacine Brahimi assist was cut out by an alert Al Shahania goalkeeper Shehab Ellethy. Moments later, Magri made no mistake, rising high to head home a Fabricio Diaz cross from the right.Al Shahania responded with a series of attacks and were rewarded in first-half stoppage time after Mohamed Surag was brought down inside the box by goalkeeper Khalifa Ababacar. Antonucci stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty.Both sides pushed forward after the break but struggled to make the most of their chances. Al Shahania came close in the 70th minute when Antonucci's effort narrowly missed the target, with the ball going just past the right post.The match appeared destined for a draw before Magri produced the decisive moment in stoppage time. He collected a Florinel Coman assist, raced past two defenders and fired home to seal victory for Al Gharafa and delight their fans. Al Arabi held by Al ShamalMeanwhile, Al Arabi were held to a 2-2 draw by Al Shamal at Al Thumama Stadium.Al Arabi thought they had taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Youssef Snana found the net, but the Tunisian international's effort was ruled out for offside as the teams went into the break level.Al Arabi eventually broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Pablo Sarabia headed home from Rodri Sanchez's precise delivery.Their lead lasted just five minutes, however, as Alexis Perez inadvertently turned Alex Collado's cross into his own net while attempting to clear.Al Shamal then completed the turnaround in the 67th minute, with Baghdad Bounedjah finding the net to put his side 2-1 ahead.Al Arabi refused to give up and were rewarded four minutes from the end of regulation time when Oussama Tannane struck a spectacular effort from the left side of the final third to restore parity. Neither side could find a winner in the closing stages. Sadd take on Ahli, Duhail face Al Sailiya todayAl Sadd and Al Ahli coaches Razvan Lucescu and Borja Jimenez have expressed their teams' readiness for the new season as the sides meet today in Qatar Stars League at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium.Sadd coach Lucescu said his team was eagerly looking forward to the start of the new season, stressing the need for maximum focus and respect for the opposition from the opening match.Al Ahli coach Jimenez, meanwhile, expressed his delight at beginning his coaching career in Qatar with Al Ahli and said he was determined to achieve success with the club.The Spaniard acknowledged the challenges the team faced last season and said he would work with the players to produce a strong campaign and achieve results that meet the expectations of the club's supporters.Jimenez described Al Sadd as a difficult opponent, particularly given their status as defending champions, but said Al Ahli had prepared well and worked to ensure the players were ready to perform at their best.Meanwhile, Al Duhail and Al Sailiya will also begin their league campaigns today when they meet at Al Bayt Stadium. Al Duhail coach Djamel Belmadi said his team was targeting a strong start and believed his players were capable of securing a positive result."We are aware of the opponent, and we are striving to deliver a performance that qualifies us to make a good start in the tournament," Belmadi said.Al Sailiya coach Mirghani al-Zein said his team was ready for the challenge after completing a preparation period in line with its technical and physical programme.He said Al Sailiya had maintained considerable stability in its squad while strengthening some positions with new players, expressing confidence in the team's ability to enjoy a strong season.Al-Zein highlighted the balance between experienced players and new additions as a key strength of his squad heading into the new campaign.

  Qatar Stars League champions Al Sadd will take on holders Al Gharafa in the final of the 54th Amir Cup today at Khalifa International Stadium, with Qatar’s most prestigious football title at stake.Having already secured qualification for next season’s AFC Champions League Elite by winning the league title, Al Sadd are aiming to complete a domestic double, while Al Gharafa hope to retain the trophy and secure a direct place in Asia’s premier club competition.Al Sadd are appearing in their 30th Amir Cup final and hold a record 19 titles, 10 more than nearest rivals Al Arabi. However, Al Gharafa have won both previous Amir Cup finals between the two sides - a 4-1 victory in 2002 and a 4-3 penalty shootout win after a goalless draw in 2012.Al Sadd have enjoyed an impressive run to the final. They defeated second division side Al Markhiya 2-1 in the Round of 16, overcame league runners-up Al Shamal 6-4 in the quarter-finals and then cruised past Al Duhail 4-1 in the semi-finals.Al Gharafa, seeking a ninth Amir Cup title, began with a 2-0 victory over Al Kharaitiyat before edging Umm Salal 2-1 in the quarter-finals. They booked their place in the final after beating Al Wakrah 3-2 on penalties following a goalless semi-final draw.
