The Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language represents a breakthrough in linguistic research, built on a scale and methodology never before achieved in Arabic lexicography, experts have told Gulf Times. Speaking on the sidelines of the launch ceremony, Moroccan scholar Dr Rachid Belhabib said: “Building a historical dictionary requires significant effort and a well-defined vision to guide the process.” He said previous projects fail because they lacked a clear, structured plan and a robust digital infrastructure capable of supporting collaborative editing of dictionary entries across regions of the Arab world. “Therefore, in the initial editing phase, approximately 330 editors worked with us, spanning Mauritania, Iraq, Palestine, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab countries,” Dr Belhabib said. “This would not have been possible without a computer system that would allow everyone to work simultaneously, ensuring an open, reviewable, and scientifically validated production line for dictionary entries, and enabling their upload to the platform for the benefit of the Arab reader,” he pointed out. Dr Mohamed al-Khatib, a contributor to the Doha Historical Dictionary, cited the linguistic specificities of the dictionary. “The dictionary examines the word, from nearly two thousand years ago to the present, tracing its origins, its initial meaning, and how that meaning evolved across different eras and fields of knowledge,” he said. “The difference between the Doha Historical Dictionary and previous dictionaries is that the Doha Historical Dictionary chronicles every meaning and traces every derived word,” Dr al-Khatib stated. “Most other dictionaries lack derivatives, mentioning only the root and two or three words,” he explained. “The Doha Dictionary, however, addresses every word in its entirety, including its Arabic origins and derivations.” Other linguists and lexicography experts involved in the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language described its completion as a major milestone in the history of Arabic language scholarship. The Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported that the project’s rigorous scientific methodology traces Arabic words in their historical and cognitive contexts from the earliest documented sources. The experts said that the dictionary goes beyond linguistic documentation, reconstructing the historical memory of the Arabic language. They noted that the project combined collective expertise with modern technology, strengthening Arabic’s role in contemporary research. The executive director of the Doha Historical Dictionary of the Arabic Language, Dr Azeddine Bouchikhi, said that work began in 2013 involving more than 500 experts.The dictionary divides the history of Arabic into three main periods: up to 200 AH, 201-500 AH, and 501 AH to the present, with smaller sub-periods in between.The project has produced around 300,000 entries and a digital corpus containing nearly 1bn words. Dr Bouchikhi highlighted the dictionary’s historical focus, which maps each word and its meanings along a timeline. He said achieving this required collecting Arabic texts spanning 20 centuries, creating a searchable digital corpus, and recording the evolution of words and roots. Dr Ramzi Baalbaki, head of the dictionary’s scientific council, said that the project overcame significant challenges, including tracing the origins and developments of multiple word roots and verifying their historical usage. He praised Qatar’s support for the project, noting that it reflects the country’s ongoing commitment to major scientific and linguistic initiatives. Dr Ali Ahmed al-Kubaisi, a member of the dictionary’s scientific council, said that the project documents the evolution of Arabic words from their earliest recorded usage to the present day, supported by historical evidence. He said that this allows readers to trace semantic changes over time and understand how meanings developed within their original contexts. Dr Moqbel al-Tam al-Ahmadi, head of lexicographic editing, said the richness of the Arabic language posed one of the project’s biggest challenges, given its vast vocabulary. He said strong institutional support helped overcome these difficulties, resulting in a large digital corpus that reconstructs the historical memory of the language. Dr al-Ahmadi stressed the importance of continuously updating the dictionary, noting that a historical dictionary is only fully complete when its material continues to reflect linguistic change. Dr Abdulsalam al-Massadi, also a member of the scientific council, described the dictionary as a unique achievement rooted in advanced research and specialisation, adding that Arabic must remain connected to its historical depth to maintain its global relevance. Meanwhile, Dr Mohammed Hassan al-Tayyan said the dictionary represents the memory of the nation, and praised the rigorous verification processes applied to its entries and Qatar’s role in supporting the project despite its scale and complexity.

A report issued by the UK's Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) has confirmed that the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) has successfully passed the mid-cycle review for its International Quality Review (IQR) institutional accreditation.  This institutional review aims to verify the Institute's continued compliance with international quality standards for academic institutions. The QAA recommended confirming the validity of DI's original accreditation period until 2027.  This milestone marks a new achievement that reflects DI's ongoing commitment to European academic quality standards and its continued efforts to build a leading educational and research ecosystem in the region. The report commended the Institute's progress in enhancing its quality practices since the initial review three years ago, both in terms of program and policy development and the overall student experience inside and outside the classroom.  The reviewers highlighted DI's ability to maintain a 6:1 student-to-faculty ratio, one of the strongest indicators in the region, which enables personalised learning and an academic environment grounded in direct interaction.  The report also highlighted the Institute’s firm commitment to enhancing inclusivity and expanding access for all students in a way that support their empowerment, develop their skills, and enhance opportunities for social and professional mobility across the Arab region.  It further noted the DI's efforts in supporting collaborative scientific research between faculty and students, funding of projects, publishing of papers and participating in conferences, in addition to the Institute's progress in developing its advising and student support ecosystem, particularly for international students, students from conflict-affected areas, and those with special needs.  Additionally, the implementation of the "Blue” course evaluation system was recognised for providing real-time data that contributes to improved programme design and higher-quality teaching practices. Commenting on the review results, President of the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies Dr Abdelwahab El-Affendi stated: "The confirmation of the Institute's international accreditation through 2027 is a clear testament to DI's commitment to continuous enhancement and to strengthening the quality of learning, research, and services.  We are proud of this achievement and remain dedicated to reinforcing the Institute's position as a leading academic institution in the region." Director of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Quality Assurance Hala Sheikh Alsouk added: "This outcome reflects years of systematic institutional effort and a strategic investment in a culture of quality and evidence-based practices.  We are proud of this international recognition and remain committed to continually improving the learning experience and serving our academic community." This mid-cycle review forms a core component of the International Quality Review accreditation cycle. It was conducted based on an updated institutional submission provided by the Institute in September 2025, in addition to a review visit by QAA to verify DI's policies, practices, and institutional data firsthand.

Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) announced that the total number of passengers who used the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks during the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025 and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025, from December 1 to 18, 2025 reached 4,924,919 passengers, with 4,712,758 passengers travelling by Metro and 212,161 passengers using the Tram, with a daily average of 273,606 passengers across the Metro and Tram networks.The metro and tram played a key role in facilitating the movement of fans and visitors to and from the stadiums of both tournaments, as well as various event zones and key destinations across the country. This was achieved through delivering world-class transportation services and ensuring a safe, reliable, and seamless travel experience throughout the period.The Arab Cup Qatar 2025 was hosted across six stadiums: Lusail Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Bayt Stadium, Education City Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, and Stadium 974. Five of these stadiums were located within a short walking distance of metro stations, while fans were able to access Al Bayt Stadium via dedicated shuttle bus services from Lusail QNB Metro Station.Meanwhile, the three final matches of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup Qatar 2025, the Americas Derby, the Challenge Cup, and the Intercontinental Cup Final, were all held at Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, which is directly connected to Al Riffa Mall of Qatar Station, on Dec. 10, 13, and 17, respectively.In terms of operational performance, a total of 48,422 train-trips were completed across the Doha Metro and Lusail Tram networks during the period from 1 to 18 December, comprising 41,843 metro trips and 6,579 tram trips.During the tournament, 34% of spectators used the metro to attend matches, while metro usage increased to 50% for the 5 stadiums directly connected to metro stations.On December 18, which coincided with Qatar National Day celebrations, the Arab Cup Final and third-place playoff match, the highest daily ridership of the tournament was recorded, reaching 357,287 passengers, with 347,987 travelling by metro and 9,300 by tram.DECC, Lusail QNB and Msheireb stations were the busiest across the entire metro network. Within the Lusail Tram network, Legtaifiya Station was the busiest.Qatar Rail played a prominent role in supporting the successful hosting of the Arab Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, through the effective operation of its networks, which delivered a successful model for transporting fans and visitors throughout the tournament period. This was achieved through the dedicated efforts of its teams, advance planning, high operational readiness, as well as close coordination with all relevant stakeholders, with the aim of delivering a world-class travel experience.Throughout the Arab Cup period, Qatar Rail continued its efforts to strengthen the role and expertise of engineers and young national cadres across various sectors of the company, reinforcing their contribution to delivering a successful transport operations model through several operational locations.

The US-Qatar Business Council–Doha (USQBC Doha) and the AI Trust Foundation (AITF) jointly led a high-level US delegation to Doha during World Summit AI (WSAI) MENA 2025, reinforcing a shared commitment to responsible artificial intelligence and cross-border innovation between the US and Qatar. The mission reflects and advances the commitments established under the April 2025 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between USQBC Doha and AITF, led by USQBC Doha managing director Sheikha Mayes al-Thani.  The 15-member delegation comprised founders and executives from small and medium-sized companies working across AI applications, infrastructure, governance, and cybersecurity. The delegation was co-led by Sheikha Mayes, AITF vice-chair Leah Perry, and AITF board member Justin Floyd, who is also CEO and co-founder of RedCloud Technologies. In addition to attending WSAI MENA 2025, the delegation participated in strategic engagements across Qatar to explore collaboration opportunities in policy, investment, business development, and talent — reflecting strong interest in deploying trustworthy AI solutions in the region.  The visit opened with a welcome reception hosted by USQBC Doha and AITF, with RedCloud Technologies and GemSoft serving as strategic sponsors. The reception convened leaders from the US and Qatari AI ecosystems and focused on responsible AI adoption, data integrity, and emerging investment pathways. The mission aligned with Qatar’s national innovation agenda under the Third National Development Strategy (NDS3) and reinforced the US vision for global leadership in AI. **media[394655]**Sheikha Mayes said, “This delegation reflects the growing depth and maturity of the US-Qatar relationship in advanced technologies. Through USQBC Doha, we are enabling responsible AI collaboration that is commercially viable, policy-informed, and aligned with national priorities.  Qatar’s readiness across infrastructure, strategy, and investment makes it a compelling partner for US innovators seeking to scale trusted solutions globally.” Michael Jordan, CEO at Gem Soft, added: “Gem Soft is proud to have co-sponsored this important delegation, which showcased Qatar’s readiness to lead in secure, trusted AI and digital innovation aligned with Qatar National Vision 2030.  This visit laid the groundwork for concrete partnerships that will translate emerging technologies into real economic impact for both countries.” During the visit, the delegation engaged senior stakeholders shaping Qatar’s innovation landscape. These included a private luncheon with the Minister of State for Foreign Trade Affairs His Excellency Dr Ahmad bin Mohammed al-Sayed at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI), and an exclusive US-Qatar AI Exchange hosted by YPO Qatar, in collaboration with USQBC Doha and AITF.  Additional engagements included discussions with Eman al-Kuwari, director of Innovation Strategy and head of Emerging Technologies at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT); and Ahmad el-Dandachi, general manager of Microsoft Qatar; as well as other public- and private-sector leaders.  Discussions focused on policy alignment, capacity-building, investment pathways, and scalable AI deployment. Perry said, “This delegation moved the April 2025 MoU from intent to action. By convening government leaders, global technology stakeholders, and founders building real-world AI solutions, we’re establishing practical pathways for trusted AI—grounded in strong governance, privacy, and measurable outcomes.” Delegation members also contributed as speakers and panellists at WSAI MENA 2025, including Perry; Lisa Rice, CEO of the National Fair Housing Alliance; Rami Darawsheh, CEO of Olea Health; and Floyd.  The delegation’s initiatives culminated with RedCloud signing a major joint venture to deploy its RedAI platform in Turkiye’s fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market—an agreement valued at a minimum of $5mn annually over 10 years. The JV aims to address FMCG supply chain inefficiencies using AI-enabled intelligence and automation, with operations targeted to begin in Q1 2026. “After an impactful week in Qatar, it was exciting to take action by signing RedCloud's second joint venture.  Turkiye’s $166bn FMCG sector faces a $22bn inventory gap that AI can solve. We’re creating smart infrastructure to transform trade across the country and the Mena region, demonstrating how ethical AI can be deployed to address major industry and societal challenges for the good of all,” said Floyd. The mission was organised under the 2025 MoU between USQBC Doha and AITF, which advances collaboration on responsible AI governance, investment, and talent between the US and Qatar.  USQBC Doha and AITF noted that the Doha delegation precedes a broader set of planned initiatives, with additional programming and cross-border engagements to follow.
