 The Qatar Chess Federation (QCF) has launched the fourth edition of its “Chess in Schools” project, “Niqla”, in partnership with the Ministry of Sports and Youth and the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, to promote chess in schools and expand the pool of players.  The project involves several public and private schools. As part of the initiative, the federation organised a “Chess and Education” course at the Chess Training Centre’s meeting hall, attended by male and female teachers. The course aimed to equip them with the skills needed to teach chess and manage related activities in schools.  The course covered the key benefits of playing chess at different educational stages, methods of teaching the game using the ChessKid website, and an introduction to arbitration rules and the procedures for organising internal tournaments. It also focused on training and qualifying teachers to manage school chess teams and organise annual tournaments bringing together teams from different schools.  Mohamed al-Mudahka, president of the Qatar Chess Federation, said the launch of the fourth edition of the “Chess in Schools” project was part of the federation’s efforts to expand the game’s reach and promote chess culture within educational institutions.  He added that the annual course was a key pillar in developing the game and increasing its presence in schools by preparing qualified teachers to train students, manage chess activities and officiate competitions.  He said these efforts would increase participation across age groups, broaden the pool of competitors in local tournaments, and boost the number of players registered and ranked with the International Chess Federation (FIDE).  Al-Mudahka explained that using chess as an educational tool in schools helps develop students’ thinking skills and mathematical abilities while improving their understanding of arithmetic operations.  The Qatar Chess Federation president thanked the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and all course participants for their support and contributions to achieving the programme’s objectives.  The Qatar Chess Federation places considerable emphasis on developing chess in schools through programmes and initiatives designed to identify promising talent, refine skills, and nurture abilities. These efforts aim to expand the player base and prepare a new generation of chess players who can represent the sport and make a strong impression in upcoming competitions. 

The Qatar Masters Open Chess Championship has been awarded the Best Open Tournament in the World accolade as part of the FIDE Awards 2026. The award ceremony was held alongside the 46th Chess Olympiad and the FIDE General Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The FIDE Awards are presented biennially in recognition of outstanding achievements, initiatives, and tournaments that have demonstrated exceptional standards over a two-year cycle and contributed to the development and global promotion of chess.The recognition of the Qatar Masters as the world's best open tournament underscores the prestigious position it has attained on the international chess calendar. It also reflects the championship’s exceptional organizational and technical standards, as well as its success in attracting some of the world’s leading chess players from across the globe. This achievement marks another milestone for the State of Qatar and the Qatar Chess Association, highlighting their continued efforts in organizing and hosting major international events and reinforcing Qatar’s status as a global destination for chess.Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association, expressed his pride in this accomplishment, noting that the award serves as a strong motivation to continue developing the Qatar Masters and elevating its stature in line with Qatar’s growing prominence on the world chess stage. The award comes at a time when Qatar is maintaining a strong presence in the 46th Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, while the Qatar Chess Association is also actively participating in the proceedings of the FIDE General Assembly, reflecting the increasing influence and visibility of Qatari chess in international forums. Qatar Masters continues to add new achievements to the record of Qatari chess, with this global recognition serving as a testament to Qatar’s excellence in hosting and organizing world-class international tournaments.

The third edition of the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum 3-2-1 Blitz Chess Championship for Under-16 was held with great enthusiasm on Tuesday.The tournament, held at the museum hall, saw the participation of 50 players, including 40 Qatari players. The competition was held using the Swiss system and consisted of six rounds.American Adam Shahab al-Din finished in first place with 6 points, while Qatari national team player Asma al-Hammadi finished second with 5 points. Jordanian Jad Awad was third, also with 5 points, but with a lower number of moves.Khaled Majid al-Zubara won the Best Qatari Player prize with 5 points, while Sarah al-Mudahka won the Best Qatari Female Player prize with 4 points.In other categories, Ali al-Sharshani won the Best Qatari Player prize in the under-12 category, and Munira Jassim al-Fakhro was the Best Qatari Female Player in the under-12 category. In the under-10 section, Issa Rashid al-Marikhi won the Best Qatari Player award, and Aisha Jassim al-Fakhro won the Best Qatari Female Player award.In the under-8 category, Tamim Abdulaziz was the Best Qatari Player while Aisha al-Kuwari the Best Qatari Female Player.Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association (QCA), expressed his great pleasure at the overwhelming participation from various nationalities, noting that the tournament was held in partnership with the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum 3-2-1 as part of QCA's aim to promote chess culture in the community.Al-Mudahka also expressed his gratitude to the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum 3-2-1 for their cooperation in organizing the tournament for a third successive year. 

A total 50 of the country's sharpest young minds will collide at the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum "3-2-1" for the third edition of the U-16 Blitz Chess Championship. Organized by the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) in partnership with the museum, the high-stakes tournament will see junior contenders battle through five grueling rounds of Swiss-system blitz chess, where split-second decisions and tactical precision will decide the podium. QCA Executive Director Hamad al-Tamimi highlighted the diverse, packed field, emphasizing that the event serves a dual purpose: embedding chess deeper into the community culture while scouting the next wave of elite talent. "These tournaments aim to build a generation of players to supply our national teams," al-Tamimi noted, stressing the vital role of grassroots talent identification. "It represents a valuable opportunity to discover new skill and broaden the pool of top players who will go on to represent Qatari chess on the international stage." Al-Tamimi praised the continued alliance with the 3-2-1 Sports Museum, pointing to the collaboration as a blueprint for driving youth engagement and sporting excellence across Qatar. The championship stands as the latest fixture in the QCA's broader initiative to team up with key state institutions, building high-level competitive avenues for both amateur and professional players.  

Mohammed Jarbi led Qatar's national junior chess team with a gold and a bronze medal at the Arab Junior and Youth Chess Championship in Egypt, which concluded yesterday with the participation of 350 players from 16 Arab countries.Jarbi claimed gold in the under-10 rapid event after scoring 7.5 points from nine rounds. He also added a bronze medal in the under-10 classical competition with seven points, highlighting the continued progress of Qatar's emerging chess talent. Khalid al-Jumaat added a silver medal in the under-12 rapid event after finishing with seven points from nine rounds, completing a successful campaign for Qatar.Organised by the Egyptian Chess Federation under the auspices of the Arab Chess Federation, the championship brought together young players from across the Arab world.Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Association (QCA), expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, saying the tournament gave players valuable experience against strong opposition while helping improve their international ratings.He noted that the record participation from across the region added further significance to the achievement and would motivate the association to continue developing young players ahead of future competitions. Al-Mudahka also praised the Egyptian Chess Federation and the organising committee for delivering a successful championship.Hamad al-Tamimi, Executive Director of the QCA, said the results reflected the association's long-term strategy of investing in youth development and expanding regional and international participation.On the sidelines of the championship, FIDE-accredited courses for referees and school teachers were held as part of efforts to strengthen the technical and educational development of chess.The tournament featured teams from Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE, Bahrain, Iraq, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, Oman, Palestine, Syria and hosts Egypt.

Birla Public School (BPS) hosted the CBSE Qatar Cluster Chess Tournament 2026 from June 2–4, bringing together talented young chess players from 18 schools across Qatar. The tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation and intense yet friendly competition across various age categories, reflecting the growing popularity of chess among students in the region.**media[458789]**Birla Public School delivered an outstanding performance at the competition, finishing as runners-up in the Overall Boys Category. The school also clinched championship titles in the Under-11 Boys and Under-14 Girls categories, while the Under-19 Boys team secured the runners-up position. 

 The Horwitz Bishop Rapid chess tournament was held at Palestinian School in Abu Hamour, with young talents showcasing their skills across multiple age categories.In the Under-8 category, Rithik Lineesh emerged champion ahead of Ayan Biddappa and Hanvika Srithagna, who finished second and third respectively. Shlok Nirav Bavisi and Adinad Anand completed the top five standings.Mohamed Azam clinched the Under-10 title followed by Neavin Raghunathan in second place and Aadhavan Rajasekar in third. Dhrish Jibin and Dakshit Karthikeyan secured fourth and fifth positions respectively. **media[450806]**In the Under-12 section, Chidambaram Chockalingam took top honours ahead of Rehaan Kannan and Edwin Idiculla Sanju. Rohan Sai Suresh finished fourth, while Swarit Tejas Mehta claimed fifth place.The tournament was conducted by Horwitz Bishop Chess Academy in a seven-round Swiss-System format under the supervision of Chief Arbiter Jaise Joseph and Deputy Chief Arbiter Rayan Joseph Jaise. The arbiting panel also included Ismath, Sreekanth, Jibin, Tijo, Sanju, Sanika and Vikas. 

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) praised Qatar’s successful hosting of the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships during its recent meetings held in Cyprus on the sidelines of the Candidates Championship. The Candidates Championship features eight players competing in a double round-robin format, with the winner earning the right to challenge reigning world champion. The meetings in Cyprus were attended by Mohammed al-Mudahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation, in his capacity as Director of International Relations for FIDE. The FIDE Council commended the strong organisation and success of the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships for men and women, which were hosted by Qatar last December. During the meetings, several important decisions were taken to support the continued growth of chess worldwide. Among the most notable was the decision to award hosting rights for the World Chess Olympiad to Africa in 2032 - marking the first time the continent will stage the prestigious global event. The host nation will be announced at a later stage. The 2034 edition of the Olympiad will be held in the Americas, which last hosted the tournament in 1978 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Earlier this year, FIDE appointed al-Mudahka to oversee the next edition of the World Chess Olympiad, scheduled to take place in September in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The appointment reflects recognition of al-Mudahka’s continued contributions to the development of chess internationally, as well as the successful organisation of the World Championship hosted by Qatar last December, which received widespread praise from FIDE officials and participants. Al-Mudahka, who made the ceremonial first move during the seventh round of the Candidates Championship, praised the efforts of FIDE under the leadership of President Arkady Dvorkovich in advancing the game at all levels, developing competitions, and expanding chess participation in developing countries. He noted that the federation’s upcoming strategy aims to continue strengthening chess development across Asia, adding that Uzbekistan’s hosting of the Olympiad reflects the region’s growing role in supporting the global chess movement. Al-Mudahka also confirmed that the Qatar national team will participate in the Olympiad, describing the event as an important platform for raising players’ standards and gaining valuable international experience. He concluded by reaffirming the Qatar Chess Federation’s commitment to supporting the development of chess locally in cooperation with FIDE, and to continuing efforts to promote and expand the game in Qatar, across Asia, and worldwide.

The 2nd Ramadan Blitz Chess Championship concluded at the headquarters of the Friends of the Environment Centre, with Azerbaijani player Asadli Vugar claiming the title. He bagged the title after finishing with nine points, followed by Filipino player Loyola Rolletson Jr with eight points. Indian player Akshith Saravanan finished third with seven points. Organised by the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) and the Doha Youth Centre, the internationally rated tournament brought together 70 male and female players. The event aims to promote chess in Qatar and provide a strong competitive platform for players during the holy month of Ramadan. The championship witnessed strong participation from internationally rated players. The competition was conducted under the Swiss system over nine rounds, with a time control of three minutes per player plus a two-second increment per move. FIDE laws were applied, with strict enforcement of a “zero tolerance” policy regarding electronic devices to ensure the integrity of the competition. Among Qatari players, Ryan Mohammed Fardous was crowned Best Qatari Player, while Layan al-Qassabi was named Best Qatari Female Player. The event was held as part of joint efforts between the Doha Youth Centre and the QCA to promote the game and raise the standard of players in the country. QCA executive director Hamad al-Tamimi expressed his satisfaction with the distinguished atmosphere of this edition and the level of participation across various age groups, including members of the Qatari national teams. He stressed that the QCA is keen to build partnerships with various entities and institutions in the country and to organise a number of tournaments to spread chess culture within the community. 

The Katara International Ramadan Open Classical Chess Championship is set to begin today at Building 15, bringing together 86 male and female players from various age groups.The tournament is organised by the Qatar Chess Association (QCA) and will continue until March 1.The first round of the nine-round classical chess competition, played under the Swiss system (45 minutes + 30 seconds increment per move), will feature several players ranked on the International Chess Federation (FIDE) list.QCA president Mohammed al-Mudahka expressed his pleasure at the continuation of the championship, describing it as one of the most prominent events on the federation’s annual calendar.In a statement to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), he noted that the organising committee has completed all preparations for the start of the competition.He highlighted the tournament's importance in providing participants with valuable experience, particularly given the large number of rated players competing in the international event.Al-Mudahka thanked Katara Cultural Village for its efforts in ensuring the continuity of the tournament.He emphasised the federation’s commitment to such partnerships and its keenness to institutionalise these championships within the annual calendar to further develop the skills of national team players and strengthen their presence in upcoming competitions.The total prize fund amounts to QR25,000, with QR5,000 awarded to the first-place winner.Prizes will also be given to the top 10 finishers, as well as special awards for the best Qatari players across several age categories, in addition to prizes designated for players from the Qatar Chess Association Training Centre.The Katara Classical Chess Championship is considered one of the federation’s most prominent annual events.It is held each year during the Holy Month of Ramadan and has provided significant support to national teams across all age categories. 

Horwitz Bishop Chess Academy staged a Rapid Chess Tournament at Al Jazeera Academy in Abu Hamour, attracting more than 250 young players and underlining the growing strength of youth chess in Qatar.The one-day event, held on January 23, featured competitions across four age categories - Under-7, 9, 11 and 13. A total of 29 prizes were awarded across the categories. Adinad Anand claimed the U-7 title, while Muhammadh Nusri (U-9), Muhammed Azam (U-11) and Swarit Tejas Mehta (U-13) secured top honours in their respective categories. Former ICBF general secretary Boban Varkey and ICBF legal cell chairman Jaffarkhan M presented prizes to the winners.
