The Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) celebrated Olympic Day 2026 on Tuesday by organizing a boxing championship for junior, youth, and senior categories (Knockout) at Oasis of Mall of Qatar. The event formed part of the QOC’s ongoing commitment to promoting Olympic values and principles, encouraging physical activity and healthy lifestyles, and raising awareness of sport as a powerful tool for human development and community building.Held in cooperation with the Qatar Boxing and Wrestling Federation, the championship featured competitions across three age categories. Junior boxers competed in the 46kg, 50kg, 57kg, and over-80kg divisions, while youth athletes contested the 55kg, 56kg, 70kg, 80kg, and over-90kg categories. Senior boxers competed in the 55kg, 60kg, 65kg, and 70kg weight classes.The event also included an interactive segment featuring sports and entertainment quizzes for children and young people, adding excitement and engagement to the celebration. The championship was attended by QOC staff members, representatives of the Qatar Boxing and Wrestling Federation, and visitors and shoppers at Mall of Qatar, who enjoyed the vibrant sporting atmosphere.Olympic Day was first introduced in 1948 by the International Olympic Committee to commemorate the founding of the modern Olympic Movement by Baron Pierre de Coubertin on 23 June 1894.Celebrated annually on 23 June, Olympic Day aims to promote sport and physical activity for all while highlighting the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship, and Respect. It also seeks to strengthen solidarity and mutual understanding among peoples through sport and to emphasize the educational and social role of the Olympic Movement.On this occasion, H.E. Sheikh Fahad bin Khalid Al Thani, President of the Qatar Boxing and Wrestling Federation, said that the boxing event reflects the federation’s strong belief in creating a lasting sporting legacy through meaningful initiatives that leave a positive impact on society and support the continued development of sport in Qatar.He added that the event serves as a platform to inspire young people and strengthen their connection with the noble art of boxing, highlighting its important role in improving physical fitness, developing life skills, and instilling values such as strength, discipline, and mental balance among future generations.Sheikh Fahad concluded by emphasizing that the championship provides an important preparation opportunity for club and national team athletes by enhancing self-confidence, improving focus, and developing physical fitness and combat skills ahead of major upcoming events, including the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games and the Doha 2030 Asian Games.For his part, Abdulla Faraj Al Sultan, Event Director, stressed that the QOC uses Olympic Day celebrations to strengthen a sustainable sporting foundation that helps identify and nurture promising talent, particularly in boxing. He noted that such events play a key role in developing the skills of young athletes and preparing them to compete at the highest levels, thereby enhancing Qatar’s representation in continental and international competitions.At the conclusion of the event, Sheikh Fahad bin Khalid Al Thani and Mr. Abdulaziz Ghanem, Head of Sport Activities section at the QOC crowned the winners and honored sponsors, partners, and volunteers for their valuable contributions. 

Qatar has been ranked among the five most resilient economies on earth — and the most resilient in the region — riding out a turbulent year to claim a place among the world's competitive elite.The standing comes in the 2026 IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, the National Planning Council (NPC) announced Tuesday, in a result it said reflected strong performance across economic, business, institutional and social indicators and steady progress toward the Third National Development Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.The numbers tell the story. Qatar ranked 1st both regionally and globally for balance of trade, recorded the world's lowest rates of unemployment, youth unemployment and long-term unemployment, and held one of the highest national savings rates anywhere — strengths that together lift it to first in the region and the world's top five for economic resilience.It is also among the most competitive places on the planet to live and do business. Qatar placed 1st regionally and globally for the absence of personal income tax, consumption tax, capital and property taxes, and social security contributions, and 1st in the region and 4th globally for entrepreneurship. It leads the region in labour productivity, disposable income, banking-sector assets, country credit rating, and the strength of its small and medium-sized enterprises.That performance, the NPC said, is the cumulative payoff of long-term investment in infrastructure, public services and institutions. Qatar ranked 1st in the region and 2nd globally for energy infrastructure, 1st and 3rd for health infrastructure, and 1st and 6th for quality of life — underpinned by a safe and stable society that placed 1st regionally and 5th globally for the effectiveness of its justice system, alongside the world's second-lowest homicide rate.Taken together, the results reinforce Qatar's position as a global destination for business, investment and quality of life, while supporting long-term growth and prosperity.NPC Secretary General Dr Abdulaziz bin Nasser bin Mubarak al-Khalifa said the achievement, secured amid unprecedented regional challenges, underscored the strength of the country's foundations. "It is a testament to years of strategic investment and planning that have enabled the country not only to withstand external pressures but also to continue advancing the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030, expanding opportunities for businesses and citizens, and strengthening its position as a competitive and trusted global partner," he said.Published annually by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), the World Competitiveness Yearbook assesses economies across economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure.

Msheireb Museums hosted the MIKTA Climate Dialogue 2026, in partnership with the Australian Embassy in Qatar, bringing together representatives from government, industry, academia and civil society to explore opportunities for advancing international climate cooperation ahead of COP31.Held at Bin Jelmood House on 17 June, the event convened under the theme "Accelerating Climate Action Through International Partnerships" and highlighted the contributions of MIKTA member countries - Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Türkiye and Australia - to global climate action.Commenting on the event, General Manager of Msheireb Museums Abdulla Al Naama said: "At Msheireb Museums, we believe museums can play a vital role as platforms for dialogue, learning and the exchange of ideas on issues that shape our societies and our future. Hosting the MIKTA Climate Dialogue reflects our commitment to fostering meaningful conversations that connect culture, knowledge and innovation, while bringing together diverse perspectives to address shared global challenges. We are proud to support initiatives that encourage collaboration and inspire collective action towards a more sustainable future."HE Australian Ambassador to Qatar Shane Flanagan said: "As Chair of MIKTA in 2026, Australia is proud to bring together governments, experts, business leaders and young climate advocates to discuss practical solutions to one of the defining challenges of our time. Climate change is a global challenge that requires global cooperation, and partnerships such as MIKTA play an important role in building consensus, sharing expertise and driving collective action.""Australia is committed to practical and ambitious outcomes that advance global climate action. We are also proud to be working alongside Türkiye to deliver COP31 through an innovative partnership that demonstrates a united purpose to tackle the shared global challenge of climate change."The programme featured two panel discussions and a presentation examining key dimensions of climate action. The first panel, Climate Diplomacy and International Cooperation, brought together the Ambassadors of the five MIKTA countries to discuss how diplomacy, multilateral engagement and international partnerships can advance climate ambition and support meaningful outcomes. The discussion was moderated by Neeshad Shafi, Chair of the Arab Youth Climate Movement Qatar, whose leadership helped steer a dynamic conversation on the role of governments, youth and civil society in addressing climate challenges.The second panel, Commercial Innovation and Practical Climate Solutions, explored how business, entrepreneurship and technological innovation can contribute to sustainable climate outcomes, with participants examining barriers to implementation, investment requirements and opportunities for scaling climate solutions across the region.The event also featured a presentation on Education and Future Climate Capability by Dr Mira Chitt, Program Coordinator and Assistant Professor in Smart Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Doha for Science and Technology, highlighting the importance of embedding sustainability within education systems and developing the workforce and technical expertise required for the green transition.Through initiatives such as the MIKTA Climate Dialogue, Msheireb Museums continues to advance its mission of creating spaces for dialogue and engagement, connecting local and global perspectives through programmes that address contemporary social, cultural and environmental challenges.Established in 2013, MIKTA is a cross-regional partnership of middle powers committed to supporting the rules-based international order and addressing shared global challenges through practical cooperation and dialogue. The Climate Dialogue provided a platform for participants to exchange perspectives, strengthen partnerships and identify practical pathways for accelerating climate action in the lead-up to COP31, which will be hosted by Türkiye, with Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy serving as the President of Negotiations.
