Demand has surged for girls' and boys' school uniforms for private and public schools, local Arabic daily 'Arrayah' reported. Some tailoring shops are working late into night and adding more shifts to deliver orders ahead of the schools reopening this month. The shop owners pointed out that the prices for primary school uniform for girls could range from QR130 to QR140, preparatory from QR140 to QR160 and secondary from QR120 to QR140. They said that many parents order two to five sets of uniforms for their daughters. Besides, the logo of the school is often demanded by the private schools and this comes at an extra charge of QR50 per uniform.
Amal al-Yazidi, owner of a dressmaking workshop, said that said that in spite of a very high demand over the past few weeks, the cost of stitching school uniforms for girls remained reasonable, taking into account that the fabric and materials used are mostly of high quality and designed to be durable for at least one school year.
Mohamed Atif, in-charge of a tailoring shop, said that his shop has contracts with a number of schools to provide uniforms in different sizes. In addition, he has a good number of other customers. He stressed that his team is working extra hours to meet the demand ahead of the start of the new school year.
Mohamed Farid, a tailor, said he has stopped accepting new orders as the workload would be too much for his shop otherwise. There is high demand for the Qatari traditional dress (Thobe) for boys as many parents prefer the tailored ones over the readymade options. Tailors pointed out that many parents often order five to six new thobes for their boys before the start of the school. The price of a single thobe could start at QR40 for the small size and go up to more than QR130 depending on the size and type of fabric used.
