Qatar registered a strong-double digit year-on-year increase in building permits issued in April with Al Wakra, Al Daayen and Doha municipalities outpacing the national average, according to the official statistics.
The total number of building permits issued in Qatar saw a 35.4% growth on an annualised basis to 677 in April this year, said the Planning and Statistics Authority.
Total building permits issued in Al Wakra witnessed a huge 88.6% surge on a yearly basis, followed by Al Daayen (75.3%), Doha (45.7%), Al Shamal (20%), Umm Slal (13.3%) and Al Rayyan (0.6%); even as Al Khor saw an 11.1% decline.
The building permits data is of particular importance as it is considered an indicator for the performance of the construction sector which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.
The latest survey lends support to the Qatar Financial Centre's latest PMI data that suggested a rebound of non-oil sector, particularly construction, in the beginning of the second quarter.
The PSA data showed that of the total number of new building permits issued as Al Rayyan constituted 163 permits or 24% of the total, Doha 153 (23%), Al Wakra (149 or 22%), Al Daayen 128 (19%), Umm Slal 34 (5%), Al Khor 24 (4%), Al Shahaniya 14 (2%) and Al Shamal 12 (2%).
The new building permits (residential and non-residential) constituted 57% (386 permits) of the total building permits issued in April 2022, additions 49% (265 permits) and fencing 4% (26 permits).
Of the new residential buildings permits, villas topped the list, accounting for 76% (218 permits) of the total, dwellings of housing loans 12% (33) and apartments 11% (32).
Among the non-residential sector, commercial structures accounted for 84% or 82 permits, mosques 6% (six permits) and the industrial buildings as workshops and factories 5% (five permits).
Qatar saw a 4.2% year-on-year expansion in the total building completion certificates issued in April 2022 with Al Shahaniya witnessing a robust 162.5% surge, Al Shamal (71.4%), Al Daayen (20.4%) and Umm Slal (8.7%). However, there was a 43.8% decline in Al Khor, 8.6% in Al Rayyan and 3.3% in Doha.

Of the total number of new building completion certificates issued in the review period, Al Rayyan constituted 24% or 85 certificates, Al Wakra 23% or 72, Al Daayen 19% or 65, Doha 17% or 59, Umm Slal 7% or 24, Al Shahaniya 6% or 21, Al Shamal 3% or 12, and Al Khor 3% or nine.
Of the 221 residential buildings completion certificates issued, as many as 139 or 63% were for villas, 57 or 26% for dwellings of housing loans and 14 or 6% for the apartments.
Of the 139 villas completion certificates issued this April, as many as 34 were in Al Wakra, 28 in Al Rayyan, 24 in Al Daayen, 20 in Doha, 17 in Umm Slal, nine in Al Shamal, four in Al Khor and three in Al Shahaniya.
Of the 57 dwellings of housing loans completion certificates issued, Al Rayyan saw 28, Al Daayen (12), Al Wakra (six), Umm Slal (four), Al Khor (three), and Doha and Al Shahaniya (two each).
