Three factors distinguish the College of Law at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), according to the dean of the college.
“First, we have a world-class law faculty with degrees from some of the world’s best universities, such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale. Second, we teach using the three principal sources that shape Qatar law: common law, civil law, and Shariah. Third, we offer a practical approach to the law with a focus on legal professionalism,” said Susan L Karamanian, dean, College of Law.
“Our faculty conduct legal research on areas of contemporary relevance, particularly to Qatar, such as climate change, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and cryptocurrencies. We take a truly comparative approach to the study of law,” explained Karamanian
She noted that law graduates have a public profile as officers of courts and the like. “They should be problem-solvers; hence, we prepare students to stay ahead of the curve by enabling them to identify likely future societal tensions and how resources could be best used to address them. Yet, we also emphasise that in undertaking this responsibility, our graduates must remain true to the profession’s core values,” she noted.
The dean said co-curricular programmes, such as moot court competitions and internships, enable students to develop and hone their advocacy skills, both oral and written. “The measure of our success rests with the amazing accomplishments of our alumni. They include lawyers in Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and the Qatar Financial Centre as well as in the private sector. Our graduates have also pursued LLM degrees at prestigious institutions such as Harvard Law School, New York University School of Law, Georgetown University Law Center, Duke University School of Law, the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, and Graduate Institute, Geneva,” she pointed out.
Karamanian said the low student-faculty ratio enables the college students to benefit tremendously from individual attention. “Our faculty members seek to ensure that our students learn legal principles while developing professionally. For example, faculty have asked students to co-author articles for publication. In short, if you want to be part of a community that seeks to positively shape the legal profession and society in Qatar and beyond, then HBKU’s College of Law Law is for you,” she added.
