The holidays witnessed a huge demand for various electronic devices, particularly mobile phones, as well as smart televisions (TV), boosting sales of retail outlets across Doha, it is learnt.
LuLu Group International regional manager Shanavas PM told Gulf Times that promotions and discounted prices of mobile phones and the entry of iPhone 12 enticed many shoppers.
He expressed confidence that LuLu’s ‘Big Bang Year-end Super Deals’ will also significantly help in hitting their sales targets for different mobile devices, including laptops and tablets.
Shanavas PM said many residents also tend to buy a new unit, upgrade or change existing ones with brands they have not used before in time for the holidays (before the year ends), especially when many retail outlets launch special discounts and offers.
Other residents also take advantage of the festive season to look for gifts such as smart phones and tablets, which are a necessity for school children who take online classes back home.
Apart from electronic devices, Shanavas PM said that many shoppers also bought smart TVs of varying sizes and brands, which are also on promotion until next month.
Samsung Galaxy S20+ G986 5G (128GB), for example, is now pegged at QR2,849 at LuLu from its previous price of QR3,569, while Apple iPhone 12’s blue (64GB) price was down from QR3,299 to QR3,099.
This was also the case in other hypermarkets and outlets in Doha which also benefitted from the demand surge in the past two months, and could extend until January 2021.
An employee of a leading retail outlet for mobile devices (authorised distributor of a particular brand) echoed Shanavas PM’s statement saying that the demand was huge in the past two months until now, and orders keep on increasing.
During the launch of a new model earlier, he disclosed that their sales reached nearly QR1mn in just five hours. After that, more than 50 units have been sold in a single day.
“Now we can only sell around 15 units a day because we don’t have stocks anymore. So far we already have 200 orders on our list just for today,” the employee said. “If we have the stocks, we can still sell the same number of units or even more.”
Other retail outlets and authorised distributors, which also offered discounts and promotions, also received such windfall in the past two months.
It is learnt that many of the latest smartphone models are also out of stock at popular outlets across the country.
