Qatar, which uses the most modern membrane ultra-filtration system to recycle treated wastewater, has seen a robust year-on-year expansion in the use of treated wastewater in agriculture and irrigation of green spaces this October, suggests the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) data.
Qatar's treated wastewater stood at 24.14mn cubic metres out of 24.54mn cubic metres of wastewater received in October this year, the PSA said.
The treated wastewater saw a 1.5% decline year-on-year; while it soared 9.2% month-on-month in the review period.
There has been an overall robust reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture, a sector that has received increased thrust and support from the government as part of the self-sustaining initiatives, especially after June 2017.
The treated wastewater reused in agriculture amounted to 7.14mn cubic metres, which accounted for 30% of the total treated wastewater this October (against 33% in September 2020). Reuse in the farm sector witnessed a 9.7% yearly jump; even as it was down 1.5% on a monthly basis in the review period.
Qatari agricultural produce reached 92,000 tonnes and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment aims to locally produce 70% of the market needs by 2023.
“The local farms have helped increase the self-sufficiency rate of Qatar in agricultural production to 33%, doubling the production compared to three years ago,” director of the Food Security Department, Masoud Jarallah al-Marri, had said.
The re-use of treated wastewater for agriculture hints at the hydrocarbons-rich country's Green initiatives, a key parameter of sustainable development.
The treated wastewater reused for irrigation of green spaces witnessed 25.2% year-on-year growth to 8.18mn cubic metres, which accounted for 34% of the total treated wastewater compared to 36% the previous month. On a monthly basis, the reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation of green spaces saw a 1.7% increase.
The treated wastewater reused in deep injection into aquifers registered 6.5% and 38.5% expansion year-on-year and month-on-month respectively to 6.74mn cubic metres, which accounted for 28% of the total treated wastewater against 22% in September 2020.
The treated wastewater discharged into lagoons in October this year stood at 2.12mn cubic metres or 9% of the total treated wastewater reused, in line with the reuse the previous month. Such discharge saw a 58.7% plunge on a yearly basis but grew 9% month-on-month.
There was no discharge of treated wastewater into sea in October 2020.
The PSA bulletin said the water produced was 60.53mn cubic metres, growing 1.3% year-on-year in October 2020; while consumption rose faster at 46.1% to 59.64mn cubic metres.
