Four officers at the Prevention Department the General Directorate of Civil Defence at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) have joined the technical committees of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as experts in developing and amending codes related to safety and fire protection.

They are Captain engineer Nasser al-Ziyara, Captain engineer Mohamed al-Sulaiti, Captain engineer Mohamed al-Hajri, and Ft Lt Ali al-Mannai.

Their joining has come as a new achievement in international participation in the Civil Defence sector, according to a MoI statement on Wednesday.

The officers recorded the achievement after participating in preparing and developing fire protection requirements according to the organisation's work mechanisms.

Speaking about this distinctive achievement, Captain engineer Ghanem al-Nuaimi, assistant director of the Prevention Department, said that the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is an independent organisation based in America.

“Established in 1896, it has a large number of experts in the various fields of engineering and specialists in security and safety. These experts set the codes and standards in all related fields. NFPA is dedicated to work for reducing death, injuries and material and economic losses caused by fire and electricity and related hazards,” he explained.

To join NFPA, an application is sent with a resume and the approval of the employer to represent it in the association. After reviewing the papers, the specialised committee takes a decision. The Qatari officers met all the required documents, academic qualifications and training courses and experiences in fire engineering.

On the participation of Qatari experts from the specialised officers in the development of the association’s codes, Captain engineer al-Nuaimi explained that those who participated throughout the previous stages in the amendments and additions to the American code didn’t have an adequate vision of the conditions and environment of the Arab Region.

“Therefore, their ideas and contributions to the code were aimed at their geographical area and environment in the first place. Hence, the presence of specialised Qatari experts among them helps enrich their knowledge and experiences, and put forward many facts, which will be reflected in the codes and standards in their updates and publications,” he added.
