Mexican ambassador Graciela Gomez Garcia has presented the “Mexicanos Distinguidos” (Distinguished Mexicans) award to Mexican expatriate Cristina Cobos, for the first time in Qatar.
The award, which forms part of the Mexican government’s vision of “Feminist Foreign Policy” aimed at empowering women, was given only to seven Mexicans across the five continents, according to the Mexican embassy in Doha.
The envoy underlined the significant contribution of Mexicans like Cristina who “are the actual ambassadors of Mexico since they reinforce our identity through dance, language, culture.”
“Cristina, you are a bridge builder and a stories weaver”, said Garcia, who bestowed the medal and certificate at the event, which was attended by other embassy officials and guests.
Created in 2018 as a proposal of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad to promote the valorisation of the migration phenomenon and the dignified treatment of Mexicans living abroad, the award is given annually to outstanding Mexicans who are leaders in their fields of work and contribute to strengthening a positive image of Mexico abroad.
“I am so touched, this is one of the most important days in my life. I want to thank ambassador Graciela Gomez, she is looking into culture and arts, not only into business, politics and commerce,” Cobos said.
Cobos’ award comes timely in the year as the embassy commemorates the 45th anniversary of bilateral relations between Mexico and Qatar, and during the 16 days of world-wide activism to end gender-based violence.
A Spanish, Literature and Culture teacher at GEMS American Academy, Cobos is the co-founder, director and choreographer of the Latin American Folkloric Ballet in Qatar since 2009.
The group, which performed in several occasions in various venues in Doha, aims to share Mexican traditions, culture and roots to both Qatari and Mexican community in the country. The Ballet also tries to be a point of arrival, safe space for compatriots who are adapting to Qatar.
