The Gulf Studies Centre, part of the College of Arts and Sciences at Qatar University, has devoted part of its research efforts this year on studying the Covid-19 pandemic which includes its development, economic, social and political consequences.

A total of 14 diverse studies that dealt with a wide range of topics from economics, politics, international relations and sociology were carried out in the light of the pandemic.

The Centre for Gulf Studies also organised three virtual seminars on Covid-19, with the participation of faculty members from the centre and Qatar University, as well as experts and researchers from a number of universities and international research centres.

In view of the changes that the world is witnessing as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the centre decided to develop a curriculum for an optional PhD course, 'Gulf and Covid-19' to be taught in the fall of 2020, offering a comprehensive analysis of the repercussions of the global epidemic on all aspects of life in the Gulf region.

The proposed course shall explore the aspects of good governance and authoritarianism and how they affect economic growth, political rights, freedom and civil society, as well as their impact on the future of the Gulf region amid these huge global transformations.

Current and former students of the centre, along with faculty members, guests from Qatar and the region, and scholars of international reputation, participated in this series of studies and research efforts that reflected interest in the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on Qatar and the region.
