Doha Metro resumed operations yesterday at full service while maintaining a maximum of 30% capacity on its trains as a safety precaution for all passengers and Metro staff against the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).
“For your safety, wearing of face masks is mandatory whilst inside our stations and trains. Stay safe, leave a space. Wear a mask at all times,” Qatar Rail tweeted on its Doha Metro & Lusail Tram page yesterday. All 37 stations on the Red, Green and Gold lines are now operational, while the metrolink feeder service is available on 17 selected routes. Doha Metro has imposed stringent measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 such as requiring Metro passengers to show the ‘green’ QR code on the Ehteraz app, wear face masks at all times and adhere to social distancing practices and other protocols such as thermal scanning.
Posters with the message ‘Stay safe, leave a space’ have been installed on trains’ seats to encourage passengers to keep distance from others and raise public awareness on the importance of practising social distancing. In addition, Metro stations have stopped issuing paper tickets and only allow reusable travel cards “to further reduce the number of contact touch points throughout the journey”.
Metro passengers who already have reusable cards can load or top up online using their debit or credit cards through Qatar Rail’s website or its mobile application. Pre-loaded Standard travel cards can be purchased at licensed retailers, including Al Meera, LuLu, Carrefour, Jumbo Electronics and Family Food Centre, while goldclub travel cards are available at dedicated goldclub offices at all Metro stations.
The reopening of Doha Metro also witnessed the launch of its Wi-Fi service at all stations on the Red, Green and Gold lines, providing Internet access to passengers upon entering and until they leave a station. According to Qatar Rail, the new Wi-Fi services aim to foster connectivity for travellers during their journey. Subscribing to one of the premium packages offers unlimited online connectivity.
Qatar Rail also launched Red Line’s Legtaifiya station yesterday, completing the operation of all 37 stations of Doha Metro and giving residents and visitors access to new locations. Meanwhile, the metrolink feeder service resumed operations on 17 selected routes. These are Al Wakrah (M128 and M134), Free Zone (M140), Oqba Ibn Nafie (M124 and M125), Al Matar Qadeem (M121 and M122), Umm Ghuwailina (M118), Al Doha Al Jadeeda (M115), Corniche (M143), DECC (M105), Lusail (M145), Al Aziziyah (M313), Al Messila (M208 and 209), and Education City (M202 and M203).
