Virtual visitors can now access a wide range of information, including photos and self-guided audio tours, about museums, heritage sites, public arts and parks in the country using the new Qatar Museums (QM) Culture Pass mobile application (app).
The new app, which can be downloaded by Android and IOS users, serves as a personal guide to explore the Museum of Islamic Art, Mathaf; NMoQ, Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha Fire Station, 3-2-1 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, and several exhibitions.
The app provides details of upcoming QM exhibitions
This exhibition forms part of the series ‘Focus: Works from Mathaf Collection’, which highlights the works of several renowned local and international artists.
Meanwhile, ‘Splendours of the Ancient East: Antiquities from the Al-Sabah Collection’ marks the deep-rooted and unique ties between Qatar and Kuwait – a show that will highlight around 170 objects, “grew out of the wish of Sheikh Nasser Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah and Sheikha Hussa Sabah al-Salem al-Sabah to share a selection of artefacts made to celebrate the ingenious creativity of artists from the Ancient Near East.”
Besides self-guided audio tours to the different collections and exhibitions at QM museums, the Culture Pass app also provides details of their facilities such as cafés and restaurants, gift shops, library, and family exhibits, among others.
The app also features heritage sites such as Al Zubarah, Forts of Qatar, Towers of Qatar, Wells of Qatar, New Life for Old Qatar, Settlements of Qatar, Cultural Heritage Management, as well as Cliffs, Carvings and Islands of Qatar.
Viewers can explore and register ahead to QM’s education programmes, which include curated workshops, conferences, and trainings, designed for families, university students and adults.
The app also takes virtual visitors to Qatar’s numerous public arts, including the Lusail Handball Installations, Gandhi’s Three Monkeys by Subodh Gupta, Smoke by Tony Smith, East-West/West-East by Richard Serra, The Miraculous Journey by Damien Hirst, Calligraffiti by El Seed, 7 by Richard Serra, and Maman by Louise Bourgeois, among other works located at Qatar University and Hamad International Airport.
During these difficult times, museums such as NMoQ found a way to stay connected with audiences in Qatar and different countries globally via social media platforms. Instagram, for example, has become a virtual art gallery for artists, giving enthusiasts an opportunity to view their works.
NMoQ, on its IG account announced on May 21 the ninth Global Accessibility Awareness Day, celebrated annually aimed at inspiring people “to think about digital access and hold conversations about the importance of an inclusive approach amongst tech leaders.”
