More than 400 orthopaedic specialists are taking part in the inaugural Qatar Arthroplasty Conference (Qacon 2020) being held at Sheraton Grand Doha Resort & Convention Hotel.
“The three-day conference has been organised by the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Hamad General Hospital, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in collaboration with the Medical Education Department and the Bone and Joint Center, HMC. It focuses on adult hip and knee reconstruction and is being attended by experts from around the world,” said Dr Shamsi Abdul Hameed, specialist in the Orthopaedics Department, HMC.

HMC officials briefing about the conference

“We have several experts in the field such as Dr Javad Parvizi from the US who is one of the topmost experts in the field. It is an international conference with a number of international speakers and more than 400 delegates taking part. About 200 of them are orthopaedic physicians mainly from the Middle East, Europe, Asia and other places,” explained Dr Hameed.
According to the physician, the conference aims to update the participants about the latest technologies in arthroplasty.
“There is a session on robotic surgery, which is very new in arthroplasty. HMC has started using the same for about one year now. The conference aims to shed more light on latest developments and how these can help patients in a big way. Arthritis is a very common condition in the region and there is a great demand for this treatment here,” continued Dr Hameed.
The conference will help the physicians in taking decisions about conducting operations as well as post-operative management, among other things.
“We are providing total arthroplasty services as well as total hip arthoroplasty, and we also do partial knee arthroplasty, which is a new service here. We do around 200 knee arthroplasty procedures and 75-100 hip arthroplasty procedures yearly and there is a huge demand for the services. Most of these are done in the outpatient department at the Bone and Joint Center,” he described.
"We have started almost all the services and are planning to bring new specialists here. We are also planning to start a osteoporosis clinic as we can have every service in one place. Arthritis problems start with knee pain and difficulty in walking. Arthroplasty reduces the pain and make them more active,” added the physician.
