The new women’s services to be launched soon at Sidra Medicine highlight the focus of the hospital in advancing women’s health in Qatar by offering more choices for them.

Sidra Medicine has announced several new additional services as well as expansion of its existing facilities.
The latest services to be launched at Sidra Medicine include an extension of new maternity rooms and a women’s adult pain clinic. The new deluxe rooms and suites feature adjoining lounge areas and ensuite facilities. The women’s adult pain clinic will treat chronic pain in women through medication, nerve blocks, active physical therapy and behavioural interventions.
In February, Sidra Medicine will open evening obstetrics and gynaecology clinics from 4pm to 8pm as well as a cervical screening clinic to help detect abnormalities and identify the need for treatment. Services include Pap tests, which check for cell changes in the cervix caused by the human papillomavirus.
“Our care and treatment, in gynaecology is based on offering the latest and minimally invasive techniques that are safe and most importantly expand the choice for women in the country. In October, last year, we launched our Fibroid Care Centre – a new clinical multidisciplinary service, a fibroid removal programme using minimally invasive methods and robotic surgery,” said Dr Aisha Yousuf, medical director, Reproductive Surgery, Sidra Medicine.
Dr Yousef also said that the hospital is offering surgical repairs of Mullerian Anamolies. “This particular surgery is available for women especially young teenage girls with rare congenital anomalies affecting their reproductive organs. Examples include under development of some of the reproductive organs; blocked outflow such as imperforated hymen, vaginal septum or duplicated system, for example, the presence of two wombs – with the one of the wombs being abnormal,” she explained.
She described the example of a recent surgery on a 14-year-old girl who was diagnosed with two wombs with one being normal and the other abnormal.
“Using our minimally invasive surgical methods, we successfully removed the abnormal second womb,” she noted.
Sidra Medicine’s state-of-the art In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment facility is slated to open in the first quarter of 2020. It will be managed by a diverse team of consultant physicians, embryologists, nurses offering a holistic environment of care in a single location, with “in-house” reproductive surgery, maternal foetal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology services.
“The new IVF facility has the capacity for 5,000 cycles per year. Since it is a new lab, we will start with 500 cycles per year and the number will go up in a couple of years,” said Yaser Aldajani, manager, IVF Laboratory, Reproductive Medicine.
According to Dr Michel Makhlouf, acting chair, Women’s Services, Sidra Medicine, the new services are a continuation of the expansion to women’s services from 2019 – following the introduction of other groundbreaking clinics in 2019 including the latest maternal-foetal medicine techniques such as advanced non-invasive prenatal screening tests, introduction of lactation specialists among others.
