The Jaipur Literary Festival (JLF), scheduled to take place from December 12 to 14 in the country, fits well with the literary history and context in Doha, Qatar National Library (QNL) executive director Dr Sohair Wastawy has said.
“Qataris have a long, rich history of storytelling, and these accounts – passed down orally for several generations before being written down – give us a fascinating window into Qatar’s past,” she told a recent press conference.
Dr Wastawy hopes that “JLF Doha will encourage Qatar’s emerging and established local and regional writers, poets, and artists to share their achievements and progress with the rest of the world.”
The upcoming three-day event will be hosted by QNL in partnership with TeamWork Arts, and sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ooredoo Qatar.
JLF Doha, set to become the first international literature festival of its kind in the region, will bring together all sectors of the Qatari society, including schools, universities, communities and special interest groups.
JLF Doha also forms part of the Library’s celebration of the Qatar – India 2019 Year of Culture, an annual cultural exchange programme, featuring a series of events in November and December.
“The event builds very well on our exhibition “Qatar, India and the Gulf” here at the library, which showcases the strong, historic relationship between these two nations, one that has endured close to 5,000 years,” Dr Wastawy said.
“These ties will be a fitting starting point for vibrant cross-cultural conversations that explore art, literature, creativity, but also social issues, language, the environment and technology,” she added. “It brings together different culture, languages, and artistic voices to be part of Qatar’s vibrant literary community.”
JLF Doha will also give residents and visitors the opportunity to attend a diverse line-up of literary events led by prominent speakers and thinkers from Qatar and different countries from across the globe.
Dr Wastawy noted that QNL established the Qatari Writers Forum to support the country’s young writers in honing their skills. They will be showcasing and sharing their work at the prestigious international event.
“We truly hope that the Festival will uncover new avenues of creativity for writers, poets and other creative thinkers through the limitless world of literature,” she said.
Founded in 2006, JLF is described as the ‘greatest literary show on earth’, and brings together a diverse mix of the world’s prominent writers, thinkers, humanitarians, politicians, business leaders, sports people, and entertainers, among others, under one roof to express and engage in debate and dialogue.
Besides its annual mega event in Jaipur, India, JLF organised successful satellite versions in major cities such as New York, Adelaide, Belfast, Colorado, Houston, Toronto, and the British Library.
