Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has trained about 1,000 staff members from some of the facilities of the organisation in patient-centred care, an official has said.

“We have trained about 1,000 staff members of the five facilities of HMC in patient-centred care in a pilot programme. They are staff members from the Ambulatory Care Centre, Private Nursing, Enaya, Home Healthcare Service and Communicable Disease Centre. In total, we have trained about 1,000 staff members in patient-centred care,” said Nasser al-Naimi, deputy chief of quality at the Centre for Patient Experience and Staff Experience, HMC, and director, Hamad Healthcare Quality Institute on Saturday.

Al-Naimi was speaking to the media at a press conference held on the sidelines of the two-day Patient Experience Forum. He was accompanied by Dr Abdulla al-Ansari, acting chief medical officer, HMC, and chair of the Patient Experience Forum Steering Committee, as well as Nayef al-Shammari, assistant executive director of media, HMC.

“In patient-centred care, the patient is at the centre of everything as the name suggests. So, you are accrediting a centre as the patient centre care through Planetree International, an organisation that works to create a person-centred care and approach in healthcare organisations. For getting accredited as a patient-centred care centre, there are several processes set by Planetree International. All of them must be met before the centre gets such an accreditation,” explained al-Naimi.

“The most important part of the training is that everyone is engaged. We have all the staff members right from the leadership to the healthcare and paramedical staff. The leadership is the glue that keeps the programme together and successful," noted Dr al-Ansari.

Dr al-Ansari said this is the first Patient Safety Forum held in Qatar and the two-day conference is discussing several important topics related to patient safety.

“We have about 1,600 participants in the conference, both local and international, and there are 30 international speakers as well as several local speakers. Also, there are 16 knowledge zones presented by different institutes,” added Dr al-Ansari.
