By staging two successful international sports championship events, Qatar is keen on spreading a message of peace through sport before the global community, according to Qatar Extreme Sports (QES) founder Farhan al-Sayed.
Al-Sayed noted that it was “unique for Qatar” to have the opportunity to host in Doha the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships from September 27 to October 6, and the 1st Anoc World Beach Games Qatar 2019 from October 12 to 16.
Al-Sayed’s point reiterates an earlier statement issued by Local Organising Committee director general, Jassim Rashid al-Buenain, who said: “The first Anoc World Beach Games represents another landmark occasion for Qatar. The nature of this event provides us with an opportunity to show the world what Qatar has to offer as a leading leisure destination.”
Al-Sayed stressed that “Qatar is bringing a message of peace – games in Qatar for peace.” “And I hope this would lead to genuine peace in the GCC and the whole Arab world.”
The 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships brought in around 2,000 athletes from more 200 countries, participating in 49 athletics events, while Anoc World Beach Games Qatar 2019 attracted around 100 countries for 13 contested sports, noted al-Sayed.
“This gathering of some of the world’s top athletes disregarded the differences among some countries, and all of them stayed united during these events. This is something very unique that happened in Qatar; so in this way the country is playing a major role in bringing peace by hosting back-to-back championship games in just a very short period of time.
“Even some of the blockading countries participated in the Anoc championship games and that only shows how sports can bring countries together and this is a very strong message of peace that Qatar wants to spread to all nations,” al-Sayed pointed out.
Earlier, al-Sayed stated that the Doha’s hosting of the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships gave the international community a glimpse of how Qatar would host a “successful” 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Similarly, al-Sayed emphasised that sporting events create economic benefits for many sectors in Qatar, such as the retail and food and beverage, transport, and telecommunications, among others.
