Qatar’s efforts to position itself as a global sport destination by hosting major games and championship events play a significant role in the country’s economic development, according to a senior Qatar Chamber official.
There is a strong relationship between sport and economy, according to Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani, who stressed that investment in sports has become “one of the most successful investments” that add value to the national economy.
“The integration of sporting activities with economic interests has placed sport on a higher position in social life. Sport plays a key and active role in economic development for many countries,” Sheikh Khalifa said in the latest edition of Al Moltaqa, the chamber’s regular economic magazine.
Sheikh Khalifa stressed that sport is essential in stimulating investments by attracting local and international investors to establish more businesses in the country.
“Qatar has proved that it is working steadily towards hosting an exceptional version of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which befits Qatar’s name and stature. Therefore, all projects connected to the hosting of this international event are progressing as scheduled.
“A few months ago, Qatar opened Al Janoub Stadium, the second stadium for the World
Cup, three years before the tournament. This reflects the success of Qatar’s economic plans and demonstrated that the country is on the right track in accomplishing a lot in terms of hosting the largest sports event worldwide,” Sheikh Khalifa explained.
The chamber’s top official also noted that the successful organisation of the 2019 World Athletics Championships, a first in the Arab region and the Middle East, “demonstrates Qatar’s capability to host global mega sports events efficiently.”
He said this recent success has placed Qatar under the global spotlight and the international community’s attention to the country’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, another first in the Middle East and North Africa.
“Only recently, Qatar hosted three mega sport events, including the 17th edition of the World Athletics Championships, the Inter-regional Sports Integrity Summit, and the World Beach Games.
“International delegates and experts who participated in these events assured that Qatar’s remarkable success in organising these events is a testament to the country’s preparedness to host the largest and most prominent event in the world, the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” Sheikh Khalifa said.
He said out of three countries, Qatar was chosen to host the World Athletics Championship. In this event, nearly 2,000 players representing 213 countries from all over the world competed in different forms of races and athletic games.
During the World Beach Games, which was organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee, more than 1,200 athletes from 97 countries competed in a range of 14 games.
“Indeed, Qatar’s success in organising these events is strengthened by its long experience in hosting international tournaments. Qatar organised the Asian Games 2006, the Futsal World Championships 2010, the World Handball Championships 2015, the World Cycling Championships 2016, and the World Gymnastics Championships 2018.
“Also, Qatar was the host of the ‘Regional Sports Integrity Summit’, which discussed key principles that contribute to creating a safe sport environment free of unethical practices. This underscored the country’s ability to guarantee that all international events held in Qatar will be successful,” Sheikh Khalifa said.
