Indonesia is eyeing to bring in Qatari investments to develop other tourist destinations aside from Bali across the Southeast Asian country’s 34 provinces, an official of the Indonesia-Qatar Business Council (IQBC) has said.
According to IQBC president Hendra Hartono Turman, Indonesia is aiming to attract Qatar FDI into its economy to spur development in different sectors, including tourism and the hospitality sector.
“Indonesia is not only Bali. The country has 34 provinces and some provinces even have as many as 10 destinations to offer. Because Bali is situated in the middle, we want to spread tourism development outside Bali and into other provinces nationwide starting from the west to the east.
“We are developing tourism destinations across the country and now is the right time because our economy is stable. We also want to increase the influx of Qatari tourists to Indonesia, which is currently low,” Turman told Gulf Times.
Turman said tourism development is among the three pillars of growth to steer Indonesia’s economy forward: “We have a tough challenge ahead, which is to help maintaining Indonesian economic growth above 5% and to limit current account deficit below 3%.”
“In this line, the Indonesian government, together with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has declared three pillars of growth. The fist is to increase exports and the second is to boost investments, mainly in the energy, infrastructure, ‘Industry 4.0’, and digital economy, while the third is tourism,” Turman explained.
Turman also underscored the role of private sector entities, such as Kadin Indonesia, otherwise known as the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which, he said “has the primary role to facilitate economic and business cooperation of Indonesian enterprises be it the private sector or state-owned companies.”
“This has been accomplished through business gatherings, exhibitions, summit conferences, trade and investment expos, and business missions through the Indonesian embassies all over the world,” he pointed out.
Turman said Kadin Indonesian had “cemented mutual understanding with most Islamic countries” for the conduct of the Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry & Agriculture or the ‘ICCIA Conference’ next month in Jakarta, Indonesia.
“The event is expected to gather more than 100 delegates from 17 countries with a total of 500 business participants. We will not stop here. We wish to invite Qatar Chamber and business delegations to participate in Trade Expo Indonesia in Jakarta this coming 24th of October.
“We also plan to convene the World Halal Summit by the end of 2020 also in Jakarta. We are also soliciting Qatar’s support for this initiative. With synergy and commitment, I am optimistic that we can boost bilateral trade volume and investment between two countries to more than $3bn in the near future,” Turman stressed.
