Qatar has witnessed a robust year-on-year double-digit expansion in the usage of treated wastewater for agriculture and deep injection into aquifers; indicating Doha's concern towards environment and its pragmatic initiatives towards management and protection of water resources, according to the official estimates.
In its latest monthly bulletin for May 2019, the Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) said the country receives 22.89mn cubic meters of treated wastewater, which represented 10% and 5% yearly and monthly growth respectively.

The bulk of the treated wastewater is used for agriculture, amounting to 8.05mn cubic meters or more than 35% of the total treated wastewater. The treated wastewater usage for farm sector registered a healthy 12% and 15% growth year-on-year and month-on-month during May 2019.
The treated wastewater reused in deep injection into aquifers stood at 6.91mn cubic meters, which was more than 30% of the total treated wastewater. The usage of treated wastewater for injection into aquifers recorded 29% expansion on a yearly basis; even as it fell 2% on a monthly basis.
The amount of treated wastewater in irrigation of green spaces was 6.34mn cubic meters, which accounted for about 28% of the total treated wastewater in May 2019. Such usage had seen a 16% and less than 1% rise on monthly and yearly basis respectively.
The treated wastewater discharged into lagoons stood at 1.45mn cubic meters, which was more than 6% of the total treated wastewater in May this year. It had registered a 25% and 34% plunge on yearly and monthly basis respectively.
The PSA estimates showed that the utilities sector was upbeat with summer peaking, as electricity consumption reported a 32% surge to 4,209.8 Gigawatt hours (GWh) during May this year. The electricity consumption saw a 27% expansion year-on-year during the review period.
The report found that gross electricity generation stood at 4,508 GWh, which represented 31% and 29% growth on monthly and yearly basis respectively.
The electricity surplus (gross production minus consumption) registered more than 54% growth year-on-year to 298.2 KWh and on a monthly basis, the surplus had seen a 14% jump.
The water consumption registered 11% jump to 55.51bn cubic meters during May 2019. On a year-on-year basis, the water consumption witnessed 38% surge.
During the review period, production of water amounted to 57.18bn, which represented 11% and 37% expansion on monthly and yearly basis respectively.
The demographic statistics showed that Qatar's total population has increased from 2.73mn during May 2018 to 2.74mn at the end of May 2019, showing an annual increase of 0.3%.
The total number of building permits issued was 659 during May 2019, which however recorded a monthly decrease of 11%.
In the banking sector, total broad money supply recorded about QR555bn during May this year, which represented an annual decline of 4.5%. Cash equivalents, including commercial bank deposits, stood at QR806bn.
