Qatar Organ Donation Center (Hiba) at Hamad Medical Corporation targets to take the total number of organ donors to 400,000 from the current 350,000 by the end of this year’s campaign, a top official has said.
“We already have 350,000 donors on our registry and hope to reach 400,000 by the end of this year’s campaign. We are getting good response from various segments of the society for the campaign,” said Dr Yousuf al-Maslamani, director, Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation, HMC.
“We start the campaign every year at the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan and it continues until Eid al-Adha. Although the campaign ends by the end of Eid al-Adha holidays, we continue the activities and hold several programmes at places such as hospitals, colleges and others. However, the Ramadan campaign is more active,” explained Dr al-Maslamani.
Regarding the number of waiting patients for various transplants, the official said there are 1,400 cases of kidney failure reported.
“We need to investigate these cases and put them on the waiting list. As it is, only 170 cases are in the waiting list and there are seven paediatric cases, too. They are ready for kidney transfer depending on the availability and others cases are being investigated into,” noted the official.
According to the official, two transplants will take place within a month with live donors. The seven paediatric cases are also ready and, if they have a donor, the surgery will be done soon.
Dr al-Maslamani also noted that all the paediatric organ transplants will be done at Sidra Medicine hereafter.
“All the paediatric transplant surgery will be done at Sidra Medicine. We will bring the donor here and will collect the kidney. Thereafter, the surgeons at Sidra Medicine will conduct the transplant surgery,” he added.
The official also noted that the centre has 12 adults in the waiting list for liver transplant.
Hiba has set up booths in various parts of the country in leading malls, shopping centres and other venues where people converge in large numbers, for spreading awareness about organ donation. Those who are willing to donate their organs can register at any of these booths during the campaign period.
