A total of 161 students graduated from Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI) yesterday in the presence of HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani at a ceremony at St Regis Doha.
The event was attended by HE the Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr Mohamed Abdul Wahed Ali al-Hammadi, HE Saleh Mohamed al-Nabit, HE National Human Rights Committee chairman Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri and other dignitaries. Parents and relatives of the graduates as well as other guests were also present.
Speaking at the event, HE Sheikh Abdullah highlighted the achievements of DI in helping its students achieve new heights in higher education.
“Education, higher education and scientific research are among the most important pillars of modernisation. It ensures the welfare of countries and strengthens their status at the regional and global levels. It is also one of the most important channels of cultural openness and interaction between cultures and people,” noted Sheikh Abdullah.
“His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani has laid great importance on the need for higher education. The government will provide all what is needed in education and higher education sectors,” he continued.
“Modern history teaches us that economic growth without human development is not possible. Economic growth has no real value if it does not benefit the society and without educational institutions that produce sensible and wise human beings. Wise and productive humans are the permanent wealth of nations. Society requires different scientific institutions that pay due attention towards scientific research and development of knowledge,” explained the prime minister.
He praised the important role played by academic institutions in Qatar saying  that they educate larger numbers of students, develop them and modernise various components of  education, research and
training process.
“Higher education centres in Qatar are discharging their duties by providing Qatari students and students from other countries with opportunities for learning, training and research. Education especially higher education is inevitable for economic prosperity and no development can be achieved without education and training. Society requires different scientific institutions that pay due attention towards scientific research and development of knowledge,” he added.
Acting provost of DI Dr Yasir Suleiman congratulated the graduates and said they will help the country in realising its goals. He also noted that the institute has an interdisciplinary focus, and aims to achieve the highest standards in education and research in the humanities, social sciences, public administration, development economics, psychology, and social work.
