The fourth edition of the Government Procurement and Contracting Conference & Exhibition ‘Moushtarayat 2019’ is slated to offer 2,600 business opportunities worth QR5.8bn, Qatar Development Bank (QDB) CEO Abdulaziz bin Nasser al-Khalifa said Sunday.
Moushtarayat, which will run until April 2 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre, aims to provide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) access to large procurement governmental projects. It also serves as a platform to grow and develop Qatar’s SME sector.
This year’s event will feature 10 workshops with the participation of 40 exhibitors.
The three-day event was inaugurated by Sheikh Mohamed bin Hamad al-Thani, deputy governor of the Qatar Central Bank and vice chairman of QDB. It is hosted in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and in partnership with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) and the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), and sponsored by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment.
Al-Khalifa said Moushtarayat targets members of the private sector, particularly SMEs, and encourages them to attend and participate in a wide range of public tenders. The conference aims to educate SMEs about the procedures involved in existing public tenders extended by big buyers, such as larger private sector companies and semi-governmental and governmental bodies.
“We are pleased to launch the Moushtarayat 2019, which will usher in a wave of new opportunities for government-private sector co-operation. The exhibition is an important platform for SMEs to communicate with government agencies and to identify tenders and contracts, thus opening the horizons of co-operation with government agencies and winning their tenders.
“I would like to express our gratitude towards our partners Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Ashghal, and the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, which have supported this endeavour since its inception and for making this a huge success. We assure the SMEs of Qatar that QDB will keep on bringing newer paradigms of growth to channelise their success and build a sustainable future, and realising the Qatar National Vision 2030.”
Held under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani, this year’s Moushtarayat conference and exhibition is the latest in a series of integrated programmes and initiatives offered by QDB to develop SMEs.
To promote the private sector, QDB locally extends a wide range of financial and non-financial support to entrepreneurs across a myriad of industries, so that SMEs may achieve higher scales of competitiveness in Qatar.
According to Qatar News Agency, Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) announced during Moushtarayat that it will offer tenders worth QR6bn over the next five years for supplying basic materials.
On the sidelines of the event, Ismail al-Harmi, head of Supply Department, said Kahramaa will prioritise local products in accordance to the law, while encouraging SMEs to participate in those tenders.
He stressed that the role of Kahramaa will not stop at providing data on the tenders, but will help national products by providing technical support to ensure those products reach a level enabling them to contribute to the national economy.
Al-Harmi said Kahramaa awarded local companies contracts worth QR1.85bn last year. The figure represented 95% of its needs from national factories. In the first quarter of 2019, he said Kahramaa awarded tenders worth QR37mn to national factories.
