With focus on sustainability, Torba market celebrates environment care

The Torba Farmers Market not only serves as a wholesome weekend destination for families and residents but also as a platform to promote sustainability and environment care, and support home-based businesses. Now on its second season, the market is open every Friday at the Ceremonial Court in Qatar Foundation’s Education City from 7.30am to 11.30am and 12.30pm to 5pm, and Saturdays from 8am to 6pm.
The Torba Farmers Market, which will run until April 2019, positions itself as “the only marketplace of its kind in Qatar,” celebrating locally-grown produce, and homemade cuisine.
Also, it prides itself to be a community-focused initiative and a destination for local businesses. It offers fresh food, natural products, and organic and local vegetables, as well as eco-friendly initiatives, adult and kids workshops, and a wellness area. The items offered at the venue are “consciously-sourced products,” ranging from organic vegetables from certified farms and products from small family farms. The fresh produce are locally-grown, GMO-free, and pesticide-free.

Also available are sidra honey; locally-sourced coffee; locally-grown fresh seasonal produce; cruelty-free, ethically-sourced dairy; dates that are 50% locally-farmed; and cage-free, chemical and pesticide-free eggs. The market’s wellness area is dedicated for sustainable living and features beauty and home products made locally and with minimal impact on the environment. For its eco-friendly initiatives, the market promotes recycling and reusing glass jars and bottles, mindful waste management, and reducing single use plastic.
At the entrance of the market, visitors are greeted with an overview of the market, its objectives, what it offers, and its commitment and curation, among others. “Our market emphasises sustainability, with a clear focus towards nourishing and nurturing our environment and ourselves. We want to reconnect people with their food and educate on how we can affect change by buying consciously, locally, and handmade.


“Torba is a special place and we bring together special things: farm fresh produce; specialty coffee; gardening – items for the organically-minded gardener; paper straws, wooden cutlery, and eco-friendly items; compost drop-off area; homemade food using local ingredients; fresh raw juices, refill drinking water station; locally-designed artistic tables; and farm-to-table restaurant.”
