Qatar Foundation (QF) will celebrate National Sport Day 2018 at a number of venues with a host of "fun and exciting" sports activities suitable for the whole family.

A number of events will be held across different venues, such as Oxygen Park, Al Shaqab, Ceremonial Court and the Green Spine, as part of QF's National Sport Day programme.

"QF’s activities will provide a number of sporting activities and high-class facilities for the community members to engage in healthy practices. The activities will start from 7.30am and we expect a large turnout of participants,” Alia al-Sulaiti, media relations officer, Corporate Communications Office - QF, told Gulf Times yesterday

QF’s programme will kick off with a 2km walkathon, setting out from the Education City Student Centre at 8am. A 40km cycle and a 50km ultra marathon will take place for more experienced athletes, both starting at the Ceremonial Court at 8.20am.

Al Shaqab will stage a day-long sporting festival, titled ‘The Challenge’, where members of the community are invited to compete in teams across a series of challenging physical activities. The event, which runs from 9am to 4pm, is for those over 16 and will include activities that focus on strength, strategy, balance, concentration and competition.

Additionally, Oxygen Park will host a range of events on the day, including tennis, football, treasure hunt, rope jump, kangaroo sack race, beach tennis, pony riding and an array of fun children’s activities. Ladies-only activities will also be offered at the Education City Student Centre, and at Al Shaqab from 4.30-6.30pm.

Family-oriented activities will be taking place at the QF Recreation Centre, including swimming for children with autism, goal ball – a football activity for the blind – as well as a gymnastics and trampoline display, a squash tournament and slalom football – blindfolded football to raise blind awareness – among others. QF will also host outdoor games and activities at the Green Spine and Ceremonial Court throughout the day.

Machaille al-Naimi, president of Community Development at QF, said: “National Sport Day provides us with a wonderful opportunity to inspire the public to become more active. Our events, which feature a range of fun, family-friendly activities, cater to all ages and athletic abilities. We really want to encourage the entire community to come down to Education City on Tuesday with their friends and families and make the most of our facilities."

This year marks the seventh annual National Sport Day since its launch by His Highness the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. QF’s National Sport Day festivities are part of a wider, year-round campaign that aims to encourage Qatar’s population to live active, healthy lifestyles.
