The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has closed a shopping centre in the Industrial Area for a month for selling counterfeit beauty products. This came as part of the inspection campaigns carried out by the MEC for exercising tighter control over the local market and monitoring commercial activities in the state, the ministry said in a statement.

Through such campaigns, the ministry seeks to crack down on violations, price manipulation and counterfeit and substandard products, the statement notes. The MEC recorded a violation against the shopping centre and closed it for a month in line with Article 7 of Law No 8 of 2008 on Consumer Protection.

The administrative closure announcement shall be published at the expense of the entity that committed the violation in accordance with Article 18 of Law No 8 on Consumer Protection, the statement notes.

Meanwhile, the official Qatar News Agency reported that the MEC carried out a surprise inspection campaign at tailoring shops in Souq Al Ali, in order to monitor the compliance of their owners with their obligations under Law No 8 of 2008 on Consumer Protection. The campaign, which covered 30 shops, resulted in seizures and issuance of three violations related to the failure to advertise prices, which was contrary to the provisions of Article 8 of Law No 8 of 2008.

Stressing that it would not tolerate any violations of the Consumer Protection Law and its regulations, the ministry said it would refer those who violated laws and ministerial decrees to the competent authorities, who -- in turn -- would take appropriate action against the perpetrators to protect consumer rights.
