Physicians and medical experts discussed topics related to musculoskeletal medicine and rehabilitation services at the 3rd Qatar International Musculoskeletal Medicine & Rehabilitation Congress which opened on Friday at City Centre Rotana.
Supported by Al Ahli Hospital and several other sponsors, the two-day conference is a leading platform for musculoskeletal and physical medicine in the GCC.
Speaking to Gulf Times, Al Ahli Hospital consultant orthopaedic surgeon Dr Stanley Jones said that the conference will highlight several new areas of treatment in the specialty.
“These are important aspects of care for many patients but neglected in many cases. Without proper rehabilitation care, optimum outcome cannot be achieved. This conference will focus on people who have such problems and how such issues can be overcome,” he explained.
According to the physician, Al Ahli Hospital provides several modern facilities for these patients.
“The hospital provides many services for patients suffering from such problems. It has a diagnostic centre as well as an orthopaedic clinic. There are also rehabilitation and physiotherapy services,” he added.

Dr Fahim Anwar from Cambridge University, a speaker at the event, said that the congress will look into new methodologies in treating these problems.
“We focus on detecting the problems early and treating them at the earliest possible. We need an interdisciplinary approach in treating such patients,” he said.
“Musculoskeletal problems could be due to neurological issues as well as other problems and we have to consult several physicians. One specialist cannot treat the patient alone as we need to have an overview from different specialties.”
An exhibition featuring equipment for musculoskeletal disorders is also part of the congress.
One such equipment on display is Stairlift, which is for helping patients to take steps in the absence of lifts.
“It is designed according to the problem of the patient and remote controlled. It suits to any type of stair and can go up for any number of stairs. There are two types: one carries up to 125kg and the other one takes up to 350kg,” said Gateway Technology managing director Mohamed Husni al-Saeed.
