HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani inaugurated Mall of Qatar by unveiling a plaque yesterday in the presence of a number of dignitaries, several leading businesspersons and a huge gathering of visitors.
The ceremony marked the official opening of the mall, which had its soft opening in December last year.
Several entertainment  programmes, including a performance by leading musical band Il Divo, a kung fu show and others, were staged on the occasion.
According to a statement issued by the mall, more than 150,000 visitors attended the opening ceremony with over 200 talented artistes performing in about 20 mall-wide shows.
Rony Mourani, general manager, Mall of Qatar, said: “We are inspired by the gracious patronage of HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and offer our utmost gratitude for his patronage. His Highness’ invaluable support during the opening event assured visitors that Mall of Qatar is more than a mall, it is a representation of Qatar’s vision for a diversified economy.”
Stage shows included Shaolin Warriors – a showcase of the skills of over 10 kung fu masters who demonstrated the Chinese martial arts culture, as well as the Dinosaur Zoo live performance by “life-like dinosaurs and other creatures”.
Families also enjoyed kiddy balloon rides inside the mall, while the MOQLIVE team  entertained the audience with its live performances.
Mall of Qatar combines shopping and entertainment opportunities to ensure that customers have a physical and emotional experience while shopping, a statement issued by the company said.
One of the major attractions of the mall is a 19-screen Megaplex operated by Novo, which includes VIP screens and in-gourmet food services, as well as a bowling alley. It has also introduced  IMAX’s laser projection and immersive sound system on the “largest screen in the Middle East region”, in addition to the latest 4D projection technology screen offering an “immersive experience with special effects and seats that move in synchronisation with the movie”.
The mall has several centres catering to  children’s imagination with concepts that delight, entertain and educate young minds. KidzMondo features more than 70 scaled-down businesses, including a central plaza, fire station, clock tower, police station and hospital theatre.
Hosting a retail mix of more than 500 brands, including over 100 food & beverage options, the mall offers visitors plenty of choices. Collectively, the brands ensure an “exciting collection” of international luxury and high street fashion, footwear, food, health and beauty, pharmacy, optics and home furnishing products.
The Oasis at the mall is a source of immersive entertainment with spectacular live shows. The Oasis takes spectators to another world, with transformative lighting and sound capabilities to dazzle viewers from every angle.
Located near the Jahhaniya Interchange, Street 373, Zone 5, Al Rayyan, and spread over 500,000sq m, the mall offers “innovative shopping, top-notch recreation and remarkable leisure options”.
