Economic diversification and increased private sector contribution to GDP growth is the “primary concern” of Qatar Chamber, an official has said.
Speaking at the annual general meeting yesterday, Qatar Chamber chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani described 2016 as “a year of activities and achievements,” focused on enabling the private sector “to play its desired role in economic development.”
“Keeping in mind the growth and prosperity of the private sector and its contribution to GDP, the chamber continued its efforts in coordination with various ministries and governmental institutions through joint committees and direct meetings to translate the partnership between the public and private sectors into reality,” Sheikh Khalifa said.
He added, “The concerns, aspirations, and ambitions of the private sector have always been our top priority. In 2016, what we achieved was a true translation of our determination to be an effective forum for the Qatari private sector. We are also very keen to move on to a new stage of quality that will enhance its future career.”
Sheikh Khalifa said last year’s initiatives included a survey aimed at monitoring “the most important” challenges of the private sector “in fulfilling its role in the Qatari economy.” The chamber also prepared “appropriate solutions,” which were raised to concerned authorities, he said.
The chamber, he said, organised local and international exhibitions to promote national industries and products as part of its role in activating Qatar’s business environment and investment climate. Similarly, the chamber also prepared studies on the latest business trends, which were provided to stakeholders in the private sector.
Also, the chamber held forums to discuss “constraints of the private sector” and recommended solutions to various sectoral committees. Other initiatives included the promotion of investment opportunities, strengthening of economic and trade relations between Qatar and other countries, and bridging the gap between the local business community and international business groups.
The chamber also organised a series of seminars and meetings “to enhance positive communication” with all its members. As for the initiatives this year, Sheikh Khalifa said the chamber launched a new electronic service package to facilitate “the largest number of transactions” online.
