Katara – the Cultural Village inaugurated on Thursday an exhibition that showcases various images of dolls on a number of paintings by Iranian artist Siamak Azmi.
Titled ‘Dolls Exhibition,’ the event features artworks that portray facial expressions of a variety of dolls, including popular Disney and cartoon characters – a representation of the “commodification of modern life and its subsequent effects on humanity.”
“The 11 paintings, displayed in sequence, represent philosophy and art. The images capture the neglect that the contemporary human being faces, starting from intellectual attacks to political attacks through to media, forcing us to drift away from our true aspirations,” Azmi said.
He noted that the title of his exhibition differs from the “complexity of emotions” it evokes on the visitor.
The images depict human life, like in an auction, degraded to saleable dolls, prompted to reveal their real emotions, according to Azmi, who thanked Katara for giving him the opportunity to display his artworks.

Several images of dolls portray the story of human existence.

“The various forms, colours and expressions in the images serve to effectively tell the story of human existence as one that has become mechanical, repetitive and defined by the products they consume, or seek to acquire,” Azmi explained.
The artist, a graduate of Geology, started painting in 1990, and since 1992, moved on to being a fine arts teacher. His works are renowned for conveying philosophical messages.
Before coming to Doha, many of Azmi’s exhibitions were held in the Iranian capital Tehran, and some in the UAE.
Katara general manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sualiti, who led the inauguration on Thursday, said the exhibition displays unique paintings, which reflects realistic scenery of contemporary humans, using an innovative technique.
“The ‘Dolls Exhibition’ adds to the series of exhibitions that Katara stages for international artists, with the aim of opening up to other cultures and sharing different experiences,” he added. “This exhibition of Iranian artist Azmi is worth a visit.”
Senior Katara officials and dignitaries from a number of embassies in Doha attended the opening of the exhibition.
Dolls Exhibition will run until March 30 from 10am to 10pm at Building 22, Gallery 2 at Katara.
